They are trying to be transparent but instead it’s even more confusing!
Was FAFSA due already? I called Santa Clara and they said that it doesn’t open till 31st?
FAFSA is not due yet. They are projecting what you will get from FASFA based on your CSS profile. The aid under grants that I posted above is from our CSS profile that we submitted. The rest is I think a guess because that info will be in the fasfa.
Everyone is saying Dec 31st because they have to have it before the new year, from what I have been told.
Some schools are telling us fasfa by mid Feb. According to Santa Clara’s website: February 1
Early Decision, Early Action, & Regular Decision FAFSA priority deadline
So then if I was not given any grant than would I have a possibility with FAFSA or no? I know you said they are projecting based on your CSS but I’m still wondering.
I see how it reads that way now.
Why, when is is such a small number of kids, do they ask everyone to apply?
"The Honors Program admits 68 first-year students each fall into what is called Level I. "
Does this mean only 68 people got merit scholarships?
They are saying December 31 because maybe…just maybe the FAFSA will be up and ready for completion and submission by that date. As of now…it isn’t.
The FAFSA determines your eligibility for the Pell grant (about $7000), and SEOG (another federally funded grant). The Pell is an entitlement grant and if you are eligible, you will receive the portion for which you are eligible. SEOG is not an entitlement grant…usually awarded on a first come first served basis with limited funds per campus…so get your FAFSA done asap when it is available for filing.
The FAFSA completion also makes your student eligible for the Direct loan which is $5500 for freshmen.
That’s it for eligibility by completing the FAFSA.
Ours is similar to this. Looks like we got a need based grant but no Merit scholarship. We will apply to the honors college and see what comes of it. If nothing more is offered we will need to move on to other schools as much as we love SCU. Good luck to everyone in this process! It feels exciting and stressful at the same time!
My interpretation is that:
- they invite all to apply for those Honors spots
- they have several different kinds of merit scholarships… a couple of them are very selective and might give automatic admission to honors
- but there are merit scholarships beyond those who get into honors (and separate from financial need)
My S24 got a Bronco award (which is in the last category)
How much is awarded for Bronco award?
I believe it varies. For my son it was $20K/yr
What were your stats?
Tbh I don’t remember all of his details but I know 3.86 uw with maximum honors coursework avail through his school (probably 7-8 classes, incl honors physics and calc). SAT 1530. Interesting/unusual and well-rounded ECs (significant time commitments but no huge awards/competitions). Engineering major with relevant paid summer internship.
Letter reads “Financial Aid offer for 2024 - 2025”. So is the merit aid only for the first year ? Does anyone know
Fall of 2022 was a little bonkers (I had another kid in that cycle). It was all of the usual Class of '22 HS applicants, plus an unusually high number of Class of '21 HS kids who had taken a gap year due to COVID restrictions the year prior and associated uncertainty. I can’t say that factored into low wait-list yield, but it was a wild ride for sure.
Oh - good catch! I hadn’t noticed that. I immediately assumed the Bronco Scholarships would be 4 years, renewable, but you are right - it says “Each amount listed is for one year.” Yikes! Definitely need to follow-up to ensure it’s renewable. Thanks for pointing that out!
If you look at the terms on the following pages, it says it’s renewable for 4 years / 12 quarters. This is also what it says on the website.
Super dumb question… where in the portal page are we looking? we see the “admissions update” which links to the acceptance letter, but don’t see anything else.
It should say “last updated” and have a date. If that’s still the acceptance letter date then yours isn’t out yet.
Any high EFC (like 300k+) family receive a good amount of merit scholarship (15k+)?
