scholarship questions

Nothing here, very disappointed, hoping our local postal service is to blame.

Daughter accepted to Swanson School of Engineering and UHC. SAT 1450, SAT subject test math 800, GPA W 4.2, Rank 4 out of 453. Mostly Honors & 6 AP classes, several ECs band/theater. Invited to apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Son’s stats: SAT I: 1570/2330; SAT II: chem 800, math 2 790; wGPA: 4.34; school does not rank but should be in top 5%; 8 AP classes.

Congrats Ocean12 and EMom22. Thanks for posting. I just ran and checked today’s mail (we’re in a suburb of NYC) but nothing there. Keeping fingers crossed for the rest of us.

Congrats to emom22 and ocean12! Can I ask a question? Did you apply via Pitt Prestige App or the full app?

My son applied via the pitt Prestige App, I’m a bit worried about the stats they see versus what they might see.

Stats sent in Pitt Prestige:
GPA is 4.000 UW / 4.7286 W. School doesn’t rank but top 5% ranges 4.5545 to 4.7821, so in a class of 950 or so, I think he is top 1-2%.
ACT is 35 (36M 36R 36S 32E, 31/10W). Completed 7 APs and 6 in progress.

He did send recommendation letters, but didn’t send an essay.

Unsent stats:
Another ACT composite 35 with a 34 E that would superscore to 36 (but I don’t know if they would superscore anyway). The 7 completed APs are 5s. SAT II MathII 790, Physics 750. Should we send some of these scores or are they not needed?

We haven’t heard anything about scholarships yet but he has been accepted to Neuroscience and the Honors Program.

Trying not to be too anxious. We are OOS from Illinois.

Congratulations emom22 and ocean12!! Those are impressive stats too!

Dave_N: Pitt does superscore. They will combine the highest SAT and ACT scores.

With your son’s stats, I would not be surprised to see a scholarship heading your way. Both DS’ had similar stats to your son and they didn’t send any recs but did include an essay. Both did get the full tuition scholarship offer.

Did the Prestige app. say you had to send an essay for scholarship consideration? I believe the regular app says that. Of course, Pitt does whatever it wants and they could easily disregard the essay request if they really want a student (and also, disregard the “minimum stats” if there is a “hook”).

Dave_N: DS did not use the Prestige App. He received it after he already started his app and did not want to bother to switch. He did send in the essay, recommendation letters and an activity resume with his application.

EMom22 and Ocean12 - Thank you for posting your kids’ stats. Pitt is one of the schools D15 will apply next year so I find your posts very helpful. Also, good luck with Chancellor’s scholarship process. S2 (HS12) was interviewed but didn’t get one. Thanks again.

Dave_N: Did not use the Prestige App. Your son’s stats are excellent. It couldn’t hurt to send them the additional stats since they are so impressive. Good Luck!

nothing here on scholarships. 1450 SAT, 33 ACT, instate, no AP due to limited availability at high school. Top 6 percent in high school class. Missed top 5 percent by one person. GPA is around 3.9 (96 on 100 point scale)

Pitt have started sending Full Tuition Scholarship since last week. Good luck to everyone.

Random question - what do the scholarship envelopes look like? Are they big envelopes like the “Congratulations” that came with the acceptance letters or standard first class envelopes?

OOS here, no notice yet. 34 ACT, got acceptance letter, UHC acceptance, guaranteed admission to school of public policy letter, magnet recently, but no scholarship decision yet

Yes it is normal big envelope postal mail for Scholarship letter too. The highest scores/UW GPA get notified first and so on. My friend’s D got notified with stats ACT 35 and UW GPA 4.0 and OOS.

Does your major affect merit scholarships? (ex uncommon majors)

@kmrcollege - to answer your PM, DS did not visit Pitt prior to scholarship notification.

Is the scholarship decision purely based on SAT/ACT scores and GPA?

@kmrcollege We did visit Pitt right before D submitted application.

No, it’s primarily based on scores and GPA, but Pitt is also looking to build a diverse group of students. Geography, ethnicity, extracurriculars, and so forth all dial into consideration. Having a kid at Pitt, as well as being a member of CC for over six years, I still haven’t cracked the code!
