scholarship questions

Having two kids awarded the full tuition scholarships, I feel the scores, GPA and class ranking are the most important factors BUT if you have something Pitt wants (geography, URM, a “hook” of some type, etc.) then they will disregard what they “claim” to be the minimum stats for scholarships. This is why you will have students with lower stats getting scholarships.

@Ocean12, @EMom22 - Thanks for the replies. We are scheduled to tour Pitt and meet with the honors college adviser on Dec. 3rd.

DD got the magnet today, she has been accepted into biomedical engineering and auto admit into Master’s and Honor’s. She is ranked one in her class, taken all possibly AP’s with 4’s and 5’s on each. She took the ACT and received a 33, this is where she is worried since her EC’s, volunteering and assuming her LOR are great. The waiting is the hardest part.

Went home for lunch today and the big Congratulations packet was in the mail. Took all I had not to open it up, but from the snooping I was able to do from the little envelope window, looks like my S was accepted into Swanson and Honors College. Will have to wait til he gets home to see if there is any money in that packet! Stats: 35 ACT, 3.9 UW, 4.1 W, 800 SAT II Math. Good luck, all!

The kid received merit aid letter, full tuition plus invitation to apply for chancellor’s scholarship. Very pleased!

Congrats to all!!!

Scholarship notifications get sent out after acceptances, correct?

Yes, scholarship letters usually arrive after the acceptances to Pitt and UHC.

S found out on Friday that he’s got full tuition and an invite to apply for Chancellor’s. And the was much rejoicing.

congrats to your son, Theretheygo! that’s great news.

Congratulations for all the acceptances and scholarship notifications!

Congratulations to everyone that has heard so far. I applied over the summer when I visited Pitt’s campus, finally got all my info in on October 15th and then got my acceptance within six days. Intended English major for Dietrich. Accepted into UHC as well.

Pitt is my safety but if I were to get merit aid from it, I’d be much more likely to attend.
Hearing that people are getting word of merit scholarships though makes me anxious.

My status are:

SAT Superscore: 2270
SAT Superscore (CR & M): 1510
-GPA Unweighted: 3.81
-GPA Weighted: 4.7
-My school does not do rankings
-National Honor Student
-Submitted Supplemental Essay
-High School is ranked top public school in state
-Taken 10 AP courses as a high school student
-Very strong rec’s from my math teacher for last two years and my english teacher who I have known for four years.
-Good mix of ECs, literary magazine, gsa, winter track, softball, gender equality club, anti-defamation league.

I know no one can say for certain if someone will get merit and it sounds like I’m probably not being asked to apply for Chancellor’s or getting full tuition, but I’d love to hear some thoughts from people in the same boat

krose, I think full tuition is still option? i think everyone who has heard so far got the chancellor’s invite which means maybe full tuition with no invite letters have not got out yet?

yes, krose, I wouldn’t count you out. My D has slightly lower stats and she has not heard about merit altho she was accepted to HC weeks ago, too. Hang in there.

Do not count anyone including yourself out! The Admissions office has stated that scholarships will be going out from December through March 1. As witnessed here at CC–where there are multiple high flyers- -only a handful of students have shared receiving scholarships. So it appears that that information was correct. December and January will likely be the heaviest periods of scholarship announcements.

And scholarship decisions are rolling, not one fell swoop for anything - including Chancellor’s invites. It’s not like they take all the qualified candidates and sift through and award stuff on one day. They meet (as I have been told) once a week for a few months.

amandakayak, your post gave me a relax. Thanks.

Glad to help, Dad2013! With my 2 kids, I have found that the merit award process @ Pitt is not consistent at all - some people find out quickly, some don’t. No real difference that you can see from stats but I’m sure it makes sense to someone, maybe diversity? maybe geography? maybe major? And Pitt was notorious in our house for sending a letter or something a few times a month - not all at once. One day, a letter from the dean of engineering. The next week, a graduate-guarantee. Next week another mailing… it went on forever. Other schools give you the acceptance and package on the designated day and then you hear nothing from them until they want your deposit. Pitt just kept going bit by bit - and for my dd, they kept sweetening the deal.

Any idea how many Full Tuition are given each year. ? Just a rough estimate…

If i remember from a letter it indicated about 3% of all applications receive the full tuition, so of 27000, about 810?
