800 sounds too high for full tuition. maybe it’s 3 percent of that year’s admits. a blind guess in the dark would be about 50 kids a year based on Pitt’s size. could be less, i don’t think it would be much more than that. and this is a blind guess, nothing more

The letter from 2011 says “last year approximately 22,000 academically talented high school seniors applied to Pitt. Less than four percent received full-tuition scholarships” So that’s less than 880.

If an average each student gets 25K then 880x2500 = 22,000,000
Thats 22M in scholarship money each yr from Pitts for full tuition .

In-state tuition is less than the 25K plus not all students will accept the scholarships. I’m sure they know what their average yield is for the scholarships so I don’t think they actually give out 22M every year. They probably need to extend the 800+ offers to get the yield # they are looking for.

Hi
I remembered some discussion about number’s of chancellor’s scholarships given and found this on the honor’s college web page

"What is the Chancellors Scholarship?

The Chancellors Scholarship is a unique scholarship offered every year to 10-15 well-qualified and intellectually curious incoming freshmen. The award includes full tuition, room and board, and the cost of books. It is important to note that participation in the Chancellor’s Scholarship is by invitation only. Students who are invited to apply will be notified by the Office of Admissions. The letter will include the username and password combination necessary to gain admittance to the secure section of the website. Please note that only the OAFA Committee of Selection can invite candidates to apply. We kindly ask that parents, high-schools, or indeed any individual or organization not contact the Honors College to ‘suggest candidates’ for competition as such requests cannot be acted upon."

My son was admitted for Engineering and to the honor’s college. He is “being considered” for merit scholarship, but we have not heard anything.

I applied via Pitt prestige and got my acceptance about a month ago, into the Honors College. I haven’t gotten any notice of scholarships (full tuition or chancellor’s). Because I got in so long ago and haven’t received an invitation to apply for a scholarship, is it safe to assume I won’t be getting one? I’m not sure if I should submit an optional essay or something to make my chances a little better.

When I contact Pitt admin office, they just started to release scholarship to applicants ywo weeks ago. The scholarship committee cannot handle all the applicants in one day, one wekk, or one month. And they asked to be patient.

In past years, some students were invited to apply for the Chancellor’s even with a partial scholarship while everyone awarded a full tuition scholarship was invited to apply. The turn-around time for the Chancellor’s was about 2 weeks (new essays had to be written). I would not be surprised if this has been discontinued due to the increase of high-stat students applying.

And yes, scholarships will be sent out over a period of months. I believe someone had tracked the numbers of scholarships and when they arrived. You can search on this forum for the previous thread on this.

I’m not sure what you mean by “this,” MTNest; are you referring to inviting recipients of partial scholarships to apply for the CS, or the short turnaround time? The kid’s letter said the CS application must be submitted within three weeks of the letter’s date.

I meant inviting the recipients of partial scholarships to apply for the CS. Did you receive a partial scholarship and got the invite to apply for the CS? It would be interesting to see if this has changed or not.

No, the kid received full tuition and invite.

My D just got an invitation from GAP in medicine. But no scholarship letter yet. :(

My son applied in October and was accepted a few weeks later. Just received a scholarship letter today awarding him full tuition with an invite to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship. The deadline for the application was listed as 3 weeks after receiving invitation. For those of you still waiting, hang in there! Letters are still being sent out!

GraniteStateMom Congratulations to your son! It’s good to hear that the letters are still going out. If you are comfortable, would you share what his stats were? Thanks.

Thank you! He is very excited (as are we!). I just posted stats on accepted thread but will do it again here.
