I’m not sure what metrics they were using this year, I had classmates get accepted for similar majors with similar stats. Accepted to CPP
My son’s portal still says pending. He doesn’t really care because he’s pretty set on where he’s going to do - but anyone think that’s odd? He did get in to other CSUs so no issue with his application.
I’ve been accepted to a bunch of out of state schools, but I really like SDSU majoring in pre-speech and hearing. I’m looking through the website and FYI or maybe I just didn’t know… it says that all All San Diego State University majors and pre-majors are designated as impacted, meaning they have more students wanting to declare that major than can be accommodated. Students who are admitted to SDSU are placed in the pre-major of that program (if all requirements are met at the time of admission).
My mom and Grandpa have lots of thoughts on why SDSU is not good fit. First because it’s an impacted school and how will I get my classes. Second virtual admitted zooms from other schools (like Penn State and Ohio State) seem to be so personable talking about how you have an advisor who is easy to get a hold of, you can email and get your questions answered right away and SDSU doesn’t have that personalization at all. They are sort of right as I’ve not gotten any kind of invite from my SDSU school to learn about the majors within that school. I also emailed them about something and it’s been 3 days and I’ve not gotten any response. I don’t want to leave California so can someone give me all the awesome SDSU facts why it’s so awesome! And also is it really that over crowded and I won’t get into my major?
I would join the SDSU FB page and many students/parents will address your questions. It has been very helpful for us.
Same story for my son. Declined with very similar stats to his brother who was accepted to honors college a few years back It’s very frustrating as a parent of a kid with a near 4.0 that can’t get into the more reputable state schools that our taxes pay for. He doesn’t want to attend Fullerton despite it having a great cyber security program because it is too close to home and primarily a commuter school. Waitlisted at CalPoly but not sure he would go if they admit him since he is set on going out of state at this point. It’s a shame these kids work so hard and there is so much pressure to strive for 4.5 gpa.
I so agree with your. I do know kids with 4.5 that are not making any of the state schools this year. I also read about a lot of out of state kids that are getting admitted with lower stats. It really makes you wonder about the system.
got into the honors college today as a nursing major! Not sure I’ll do the honors college though because I’m not sure if can handle being a nursing major and doing classes for the honors college! any advice?
also does anyone know when they pick presidential scholars? or if they email people who applied for it if they didn’t win it?
I would highly recommend that you visit the campuses of those schools. They each are VERY different in location and vibe. Good luck!
Senior narrowed down to Cal Poly UW SDSU (waitlists no longer important)
Admitted “undeclared” to SDSU
Really liked SDSU visit and the ISCOR
- was ISCOR a direct admit and 2) is there a way to get into that major?
UW has global studies, Poly has a concentration that can be added to ethnic studies, but SDSU program seems well organized and impressive in content.
Kid clearly happiest at SDSU visit.
Thanks in advance!!!
All majors at SDSU are direct admits so not sure why your student was admitted Undeclared unless that is what they selected on the application?
Majority of the majors are “Pre-Majors” and require a minimum GPA requirement in the pre-req classes to declare the major so your son should meet their academic advisor during Freshman orientation to plan out his classes.
Impacted Program
The international security and conflict resolution (ISCOR) major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the international security and conflict resolution (ISCOR) major, students must meet the following criteria:
a. Complete preparation for the major;
b. Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units; c. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).
Major Academic Plans (MAPs)
Visit My Map for the recommended courses needed to fulfill your major requirements. The MAPs website was created to help students navigate the course requirements for their majors and to identify which General Education course will also fulfill a major preparation course requirement.
Accepted off the waitlist on 4/19 for Criminal Justice!
Congrats! Did you get an email or was it in your portal?
Thank you! I got an email about how my portal was updated.
Hi Gumbymom,
My daughter just accepted her offer into SDSU, so excited! Amazing campus and I heard the business program is good! My question is: If a student meets the requirements to switch into an impacted major like International Business, do they automatically get into the impacted major or could they get rejected from getting in at that point (presumably 1.5-2 years into their undergraduate years) because the major is too impacted?
All majors at SDSU are impacted but as long as she meets the course requirements and GPA minimum, she can declare the major.
The international business major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the international business major, students must meet the following criteria:
A. Complete with a grade of C or higher: Accountancy 201 and 202; Economics 101 and 102; Economics 201 or Statistics 119; Finance 240; and Management Information Systems 180. These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC);
B. Complete or test out of one language sequence: Arabic 101, 102, 201, 202 (16 units); Chinese 101, 102, 201, 202 (20 units); English (Communication 103, 245; Linguistics 100 or Rhetoric and Writing Studies 100; Linguistics 200 or Rhetoric and Writing Studies 200 (12 units); French 100A, 100B, 201, 210, 220, 221 (22 units); German 100A, 100B, 202, 205A, 205B (21 units); Italian 100A, 100B, 201, 211, 212 (21 units); Japanese 111, 112, 211, 212 (20 units); Korean 101, 102, 201, 202 (20 units); Portuguese 101, 102, 203, 204 (16 units); Russian 100A, 100B, 200A, 200B (20 units); or Spanish 101, 102, 201, 202, 211, 212 (22 units);
C. Complete with a grade of C or higher, the regional/cultural studies emphasis from one of the following regions: Middle East and North Africa: History 100 and 101; Asia: Asian Studies 100, 101, or 150; Latin America: Latin American Studies 101; North America: Six units (one pair) selected from History 109, 110; or Political Science 101, 102; Central Europe: Six units selected from Classics 140; European Studies 101; History 105, 106 (recommended); Western Europe: Six units selected from Classics 140; European Studies 101; History 105, 106 (recommended). These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC);
D. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.90 or higher.
To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment). After satisfying the above supplementary admissions criteria, students must submit documentation (unofficial transcripts, grade cards, etc.) to the program adviser before they can be admitted to the upper division major.
The link above is MyMaps which she can use to plan out her 4 year schedule and she should meet with the IB advisor each semester to make sure she is on target to declare.
Thank you so much!
I was also accepted to SDSU (but will probably not be attending). HOWEVER, it’s a great school and I toured the campus a few weeks ago and was really impressed. It’s a gorgeous campus and, in my opinion, nicer than many of the UC’s (really nice old Spanish buildings and easy to navigate layout). Your daughter made a great choice with International Business as her alternate major. For what it’s worth, SDSU has one of the top IB programs in the country. It’s ranked #8 according to USNews&WR (right after Berkeley and above USC). https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-international. Sounds like she has some great choices. Good luck!
Thank you! We’re so happy!
