Have they found the girl?

The press is getting a bit ridiculous. On the evening news, (local, Richmond) they were camped out at the Richmond airport and the Charlottesville airport speculating when he’d arrive. They had reporters stationed on all sides of the Charlottesville lockup and when a van carrying the suspect went into the sally port the reporter “filmed” it with his cell phone, while running. Are they hoping the suspect will confess all to a local TV reporter?

As Flossy mentioned, the courts will be closed until Thursday so they will really run out of things to say about Matthew.

I feel the focus on Matthew is diverting attention from the search for Hannah.

One can hope that it isn’t diverting the attention of the police.

They’re still searching but according to Chief Longo their focus is on narrowing the window of time between when she was last seen and when she was reported missing and JM is where that dead-ends. Here’s an interview with him this morning that covers all of it pretty well.

<a href=“Police Chief: Matthew not yet talking to police - WTOP News”>PGT: Q1 Earnings Snapshot - WTOP News;

It’s been two weeks. Her poor family. And her friends–imagine the anguish of realizing that by ditching your friend and letting her find her way home alone, you might have inadvertently contributed to her disappearance.

Was she ditched? I hadn’t heard that but I’m still confused about that night I thought she was on her way to another party and sent or maybe wrote but didn’t send a text about being lost. Did anyone get this text? I still don’t get this part. If so, why did it take so long to report her missing?

Edit - I don’t know. This story and the timeline map suggest a little over an hour of wandering around before being scene with Matthew.

The timeline from CNN

11: 50 p.m. Friday — Graham last seen by friends at Camden Plaza Apartments, in the 200 block of 14th Street NW.
12:45 a.m. Saturday — Graham seen on surveillance video outside of McGrady’s Pub on Grady Street.
12:55 a.m. Saturday — Graham seen on Shell station surveillance video on Preston Ave.
1 a.m. Saturday — Witness reports seeing Graham on Downtown Mall
1:20 a.m. Saturday — Graham sends a text to friends saying she was lost in the area around 14th and Wertland Streets.

I don’t think we know exactly what time the doorperson at Tempo puts her with JM.

I think its after 1:30, based on the interview with InsideCville. Not sure its reliable.

The open question is whether she sent that last text or not. It could be an “inoculation” attempt by the perpetrator, or it could be genuine, but from a Hannah who was confused. There’s too much we don’t and won’t know, and some of it isn’t relevant to the outcome or the prosecution. Based on the time revealed in the article, if Hannah sent that text at 1:20 it would have been during the time she was with Matthew.

Forensics news. Every local station has it and the source is reportedly the MH family via VSP…

http://wtvr.com/2014/09/29/hannah-graham-morgan-harrington-connection/

http://www.wdbj7.com/news/local/sources-tell-wtvr-that-forensic-evidence-links-jesse-matthew-to-morgan-harrington/28315192

Ugh.

I am not surprised if this is the case, but I would have thought that it would be better to have kept this information confidential until an official announcement could be made, at some appropriate point. It would seem to me that that time would be when a prosecutor expands the charges against Matthew.

The State Police are also now calling the JM arrest a significant break in the MH case. I doubt if Gil Harrington would have said anything without someone advising her to do so. Perhaps, turning up the heat on JM? But, I’m speculating again. Also, I am equally not surprised. There were clues this was coming all along.

If they have evidence, there is no need to turn up the “heat”. If this guy is guilty, especially of all three of the supposedly linked crimes, the task for his lawyer will be to sidestep a death penalty. You’re not going to get a confession from him in any of the cases.

I don’t agree that there were clues all along. There was reason to be suspicious of a link. Maybe that fits the definition of a clue.

I’m waiting to hear what the forensic evidence is. There are too many cases where police and prosecutors fumble their opportunities. My understanding of DNA evidence is that it takes a relatively long time to isolate and examine it. Maybe that’s not correct. In any case, we’ll have it sooner or later, and he’s in custody now.

And in a heartbreakingly ironic way, this is not good news for Hannah’s family.

EDIT: Here is the release from the WVIR website. I’m not as sure as the journalists about what is being said here.

Ok, what I meant by clues was the fact that the MH family was very closely involved in the investigation and the police answered questions about possible developing links with phrases like “not at this time” and, “That’s a very good question. Unfortunately, I can’t address the evidence it right now”. No, it’s not good news for Hannah or her family. Here’s the official statement…

Virginia State Police Press Release

For the past five years, the Virginia State Police has been aggressively pursuing the investigation into the disappearance and death of 20-year-old Morgan D. Harrington of Roanoke, Va. Last week, the arrest of Jesse L. Matthew Jr., 32, of Charlottesville, Va., provided a significant break in this case with a new forensic link for state police investigators to pursue. There is a still a great deal of work to be done in regards to this investigation and we appreciate the public’s patience as we move forward.

Anyone with new information concerning the Harrington investigation is encouraged to contact the Virginia State Police at 434-352-3467 or the Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.

Meanwhile, state police continues to dedicate the necessary resources to assist the Charlottesville Police Department through the course of its investigation and with their efforts to locate Hannah Graham. In fact, right now, the public’s focus needs to remain on helping Charlottesville Police locate and bring Hannah Graham home.

Well, they must have something. They don’t have Hannah but they do have Morgan. Sadly, her mom told a reporter Morgan was in a box in the living room and urged the public to keep looking for Hannah. There are no winners.

DNA also links to a Fairfax rape where the victim ran away. And, there are lots of other missing girls. This is very bad.

At least if this is the guy he is off the streets.
