Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

That was exactly what I thought about Poor Things. She deserved the Oscar, a lot of physical acting, and I’m not just talking about the sex. I also wondered why so much of it, but then realized a lot of it was showing her mentally thru puberty and young adulthood, when it’s on the mind quite a bit. It slowed down as she matured. Plus it was a way to keep people watching!

Two very different movies. H wanted to watch The Changling, a 1980 movie starring George C. Scott. It was listed as horror, but it was more like a supernatural murder mystery. I really liked it.

Last night we watched The Boys in the Boat on MGM+. A Miracle like movie. We both liked it a lot. It’s not quite at the same level as Miracle, but what is? And I enjoyed not knowing the final result before the ending. But one eyebrow raising item for me… I just don’t think there were that many girls in college at the University of Washington in 1936, especially in a class that seemed to be an Intro to Engineering class? I could be wrong, but it did make me go hmm…

My hockey playing daughter and I were discussing Miracle this weekend (comparing it to the 102 to 100 CU Buffs victory over UF in March Madness) and saying “I can watch it 100 times and I’m just as surprised that they win EVERY time!” Miracle, Hoosiers, the Red Sox in game 6 against the Yankees (the bloody sock game)? EVERY TIME they pull it out.

I’m babysitting this weekend and I’m going to have my daughter ask her friends (I don’t have my own grandchildren so I’m now borrowing some from her friends) if they have MGM+ or Prime to rent Boys in the Boat for me in payment. I’m not sure the 4 month old will like it as much as me. I read the book so I do know how it ends.

I also enjoyed The Boys in the Boat. I was familiar with the book and remembered a PBS documentary about the team. Still, it was nice to see their story made into a movie.

I’m right there with you re: Miracle. I’m on pins and needles every time. And I KNOW what’s going to happen! I think it’s my favorite movie ever.

This past Saturday was a rainy day so H and I finally went to see the second Dune movie. We both really liked it.

Watched the Zone of Interest. The casual dehumanization of Jews was difficult to watch. A mere wall dividing everyday family life and the torture and extermination of human beings was surreal. I thought it artistically done. The constant sounds of Auschwitz droning in the background during most of the film had me on edge. The acting was superb.

Maybe not in engineering (that class was probably a movie depiction), but plenty of women at U of Washington in the 1930s. I was curious as I know there were sororities there at the time.

      1929-1930 1930-1931 1931-1932 1932-1933 1933-1934

Men 4,810 5,017 4,774 4,324 5,070
Women 3,576 3,566 3,141 2,869 3,399
Total 8,394 8,583 7,915 7,193 8,469

Sorry for the spacing issues, I copied and pasted and tried to line up the columns, but it wouldn’t let me. So about60/40 men/women? This article was about the depression years and how there had been more students and then the numbers fell as the depression went on.

Yes. Yes, I have.

Cannot recall all of the titles, but do recommend Shoplifters which was released in 2018. Set in Tokyo, Japan. Capable of changing one’s perspective on a variety of matters.

Another to consider: A coming-of-age film: Frybread Face & Me

For those who like special ops/intelligence type movies, we rented Land of Bad. Stars Russel Crowe, Liam Hemsworth… and also his brother who’s not Chris! He doesn’t play a huge part, but it was neat. You can see the resemblance between the 3.

H really liked it. I liked it, except I don’t do torture scenes. They didn’t last too long.

I read the book a year or two ago and had the same depressing feeling. The way they were treated and cheated was also infuriating.

But I made it through and was glad I did. It was an important true story for me to be aware of. But I fully understand why someone else might have decided to not finish the movie or the book.

“A pleasant escape from our tiring reality” is why many seek movies/books. Flowers Of A Killer Moon definitely is not pleasant. But after finishing the book, I found it very good.

My son said it’s much better than the first. Is that your opinion. We watched the first last month and I thought it was just ok. I have no desire to watch the 2nd unless it’s that good.

@conmama H and I both thought this Dune one was better than the first part although we both liked the first one too.

We saw Civil War last night. My MIL was surprised and disappointed that is wasn’t about the actual Civil War .
It was disturbing, violent, heartbreaking and moving. Well acted, with fantastic cinematography. I loved the soundtrack.
Without giving anything away, I was annoyed with how a pivotal scene was handled. I just thought the message could have been presented more delicately.
It was also refreshing to see a movie under 2 hours.

Last night I watched Anyone But You on Netflix. It’s a cute enough rom com mainly set in and around Sydney, Australia so some great scenery. I guess it was a big deal on social media last winter when it was in theaters because it was a preview before the Eras concert movie. It was fluffy, a bit raunchy, and watchable.

The plot was obvious because it’s based on Much Ado About Nothing. In fact, the main characters are named Bea and Ben, and quotes from the play appear in the background. After it ended, I felt an urge to watch the opening title sequence from the 1993 Much Ado movie starring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. One of my favorite openings of all films. I found the movie for free (with ads) on Pluto.

Thank you for the Anyone But You suggestion. H and I watched it last night and it was light and funny. Just what we needed for a Sunday evening.

I’ve seen movies, but not any good ones. Garfield seems to be a movie I might watch…maybe. The rest, I’ll wait until they show up on Amazon.

We watched Stand By Me as a family last night. My kids are 22 and 20. They agreed to watch it to “be nice”, but they really enjoyed it. It is a classic and has aged well.

I watched that for the first time a few months ago. Agree it has aged well!
