We saw The Fall Guy at the movie theater last night. Very notable for me, since it was the first bigger movie I saw on opening Friday night at the movie theater since covid. I warned H not to get mad if I moved seats if it was crowded/people coughing. Wound up being maybe 10 others in the theater. No biggie.
I really liked it! It was very cute, but did a lot to bring attention to all of the stunt people who make the movies happen. At the end during the credits, they showed the stunt people making this film. Lots of fun.
We watched “The Judge” on Netflix last night, a 2014 movie with Robert Duvall and Robert Downey, Jr. (and Billy Bob Thornton in a minor role). Wow, what a good movie! Lots of layers and nuances. I highly recommend it. I don’t know why I hadn’t already seen it.
Not quite a movie, but didn’t want to start a thread…
Anyone else been watching John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA (Netflix)?
So far we found episodes 1 & 2 to be priceless (in a good way…I had actual tears from laughing so hard during ep 2) - episode 3 kinda fell on its face, but we’re all in. 3 more episodes to go…
John Mulaney May well be my favorite comic of late. His delivery is superb.
Our lighthearted, goofy comedy last night. Hilarious for folks of our era. Not sure how many of the jokes would be funny to our kids. But from the opening scene showing nostalgic toys of the 60s we were hooked.
Got a new Fire TV and when I set it up it came with 6 months of free MGM+ . Finally got to see The Boys in the Boat. I’d read the book and loved it. I liked the movie okay and will probably watch again, but of course didn’t like it as much as the book.
Now I have to watch everything else that’s free for 6 months.
I stated watching The Judge the other day and realized i’ve seen it. I don’t remember much about it, but as I watched it was all coming back.
We just watched Iron Claw. Zac Efron’s body transformation was astounding. I thought it was well acted, but it was extremely sad. It seemed a bit disjointed at points, but I read about the making of it after I watched and certain events weren’t included because it was just too much tragedy. I remember how popular wrestling was in the early 80’s and watching it on the weekends as a kid.
Saw The Fall Guy.
Perfect for the whole family -PG even- that mixes a romantic comedy (heavy on the comedy) and impeccably choregraphed action sequences. The film-within-a-film aspect, how stunts and special effects are coordinated, is really interesting. Viewers are also very aware that the blockbuster “Dune meets avatar” film is inane (~“we will annihilate the enemy because our force is love”) yet is taken seriously by the filmmaker who’s being given a huge break, being a woman director. Who’s trying to frame Colt and why? Will Jodie ever forgive him? Will he have to jump from a building/helicopter/boat in the process?
All in all, super entertaining and very funny!
I hope it’s still in theaters near you.
(Also, don’t miss the split screen credits, where the names of each stunt and Fx person involved roll on the right while they show them&stunts on the left.)
We were planning to see the Fall Guy this weekend, but we’re just too busy. Hopefully, we’ll get to see it next weekend. I’ve wanted to see it since I saw the first promo for it.
I read that the distributor was going to pull ot from theaters to have it on VOD because VOD is more profitable for them (no splitting with the movie thearer chain?) I feel the film benefits from being seen on a large screen.
The Fall Guy was amusing family fun on a large screen. I sense that it would have been boring & not held my attention on the small screen. Not sure why…maybe because the stunts, the colors, visuals, brought a lot to a mediocre plot but fun family movie.
H and I spent a rainy afternoon at the nearby movie theater watching “Back to Black” the Amy Winehouse biopic. It has been panned, but I enjoyed it (though it is terribly sad obviously).
We watched American Fiction on our Delta flight. It was excellent, both funny and sad at the same time. If you’re a Sterling K Brown fan, you will enjoy it even more.
Rather, now streaming on Netflix, was excellent. I fondly remember that era of the great news anchorman that briefly inspired my own journalistic dreams. When Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, or Tom Brokaw reported the news, I believed them. The documentary provides a enlightening look at Rather’s storied career. Historians and newsophiles will most enjoy it.
