We just saw American Fiction and agree that it was one of the best movies I’ve seen in ages. Lots of interesting meta stuff going on there. Even one scene that I wasn’t convinced worked had me thinking more about the issues. I read some Reddit deep dives and I missed some subtle references I should have caught.
We enjoyed “The Holdovers” (Prime). Slow moving, sometimes funny and sometimes serious. A nice change from action movies and murder mysteries.
agree. We enjoyed it, too. Not too many movies fitting this category, and this one was great.
Not a movie but a mini-series. Us on PBS. Will resonate with CC parents… follows a family that went on a lifetime tour of Europe the summer before the son’s departure for college. The wife wanted to break up the bleak marriage, and the husband wanted to save it.
We saw the latest Mad Max movie, Furiosa. I hadn’t intended on going, since I wasn’t that interested, but my husband read reviews that gave it four stars, so we went. Wow, really good! Now we have to go back and watch the last one. I was surprised at how good it was, and we will likely watch it again.
I’m interested in watching because of the positive reviews but I’m not a fan of graphic violence like torture scenes. Exploding vehicles are OK. Does it have a lot of graphic violence?
I’d say it’s similar to the last Mad Max one, definitely plenty of violence, but it didn’t seem that graphic. I don’t remember anything that I had to look away from. Then again, we sneak in wine, so maybe that’s why I didn’t notice anything terribly disturbing.
Saw some previews… Twisters and Young woman and the sea look promising.
Thanks!

We just watched “The Sense of Wonder,” a 2015 French movie on Amazon Prime. It got mixed reviews, but we really enjoyed it. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the main character reminded my husband and me a little of our ill son. It’s like a modern-day fairy tale.
I just finished the first Amy Winehouse movie, “Amy” (Max). Whoa, what a talent! The first half (2 hours or so total) was an amazing showcase. And in the second half, she fell apart. It’s a documentary: Amy being Amy.
I was inspired to watch it by the NY Times review of the recently released “Back to Black.”
I’m glad I saw this one first.
I enjoyed The Holdovers but the rest of my family didn’t like it and quit watching halfway through. I thought they quit before the turning point, and they thought it was too long of a wait.
Binged Us yesterday. I really enjoyed it.
Started watching The Bear series. Very good so far.
H and I both liked Hit Man on Netflix. A little gruesome but mostly romcom. Interesting back story- based on a true story except for embellishment. The main actor Glen Powell co-wrote the screenplay. He had decided if he was going to get a main part he needed to make one.
I think Glen Powell should be pleased with all the parts he’s getting lately. Seems like he’s in everything.
We really enjoyed “The Beautiful Game” (Netflix). Heartwarming story about soccer homeless competition. Plus extra perk of great Rome scenery, which brought back memories of our visits.
I’ll watch anything with Bill Nighy. We loved this movie, too.
Not a “movie” per se, but if you have Netflix - David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs no Introduction with Miley Cyrus was a wonderful watch. She’s extremely well spoken and bright and the music pieces are incredible.
I’m now on the hunt to find out how to score a ticket to one of her salon gigs.
