Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

A post was merged into an existing topic: Binge watched tv shows (Part 2)

Has anyone seen The Girl With All The Gifts? I had a flashback to the book for some reason and thought about how it would make a great movie. I looked it up and, low and behold, there is one. Released in 2016. I don’t remember hearing anything about it, so I’m thinking it more be more of a straight to streaming type release.

I discovered that ShawWife had not seen ShawShank Redemption, which is a brilliant movie (written by Stephen King, it turns out). She also loved it.

Oh gosh, my husband loves ShawShank Redemption. He’ll watch it anytime he see it.

We rewatched Schindler’s List since we’re going to tour Schindler’s factory in Krakow the first week of May. Wow, if you haven’t seen it in awhile it’s worth watching again. So well done.

That was a good idea. Before visiting Amsterdam, we happened to watch the “A Small Light” series about Anne Frank’s family in hiding… was very meaningful when we visted the house/museum.

Yes, we always try to research the places we visit. I’m reading “Poland” by James Michener. I don’t know if I’ll finish it in time - it’s a very dense read!

That is so admirable. I’m always like “surprise me!” I think some of my travels would be more meaningful if I actually researched some of these places.

I did some quick research on Sagrada Familia, Picasso, Gaudi before I went to Barcelona and wish I had done more. It was nice having some time frames because I knew very little before I went (my daughter on the other hand knew a ton).

I wish I’d learned more, especially about the Spanish Civil war. I guess I’ll have to go back.

When my parents took my family to Europe for 3 weeks in 2012, it was our first big trip anywhere. The month before, each day, I had my kids research and write a page about a place/something we were going to see. (Mean mom - but they were more excited to see the places when we got there)

I highly recommend Number 24 - it’s not Krakow, but the subject matter is intertwined with your destination.

Thank you so much! I will definitely watch it.

Count me as one that researches a place before we visit. We watched Band of Brothers and a couple of WWII movies before going to Normandy last year. Just made the trip that much more meaningful.

We are headed to Ireland this summer and I plan on watching the Say Nothing series on Hulu. Would like other recommendations if folks have any about the Troubles.

I recommend '71 - a very gripping thriller from the POV of an English soldier sent to Belfast who gets separated from his unit during a riot. Jack O’Connell stars, and you’ll see a young Barry Keoghan. If you have Kanopy with your library, you can watch it there for free. There’s also Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s film about his family; it’s set at the start of the Troubles in the late 60s. Seems to be on Peacock.

I recommend

It’s gripping. No clean, happy resolution - but resolution nevertheless, for most.

And for another perspective.. Derry Girls!

Just saw that Rust will be making its debut in theaters on May 2. Ironically, the movie plot involves accidental shooting.

Watch Michael Collins with Liam Neeson leading the Irish struggle for independence against Britain. We spent a couple of months in Dublin and were glad we watched it. You can also visit the Kilmainham Goal* which figures prominently in the story and where those scenes were filmed.

Band of Brothers makes everything more meaningful. It’s a required watch Plebe year at West Point. Lt. Winters’ attack on a fortified German artillery position in episode 2 is still studied there.

*We visited on my 60th BD where I learned that I was officially old in Ireland as my ID granted me the senior discount. Happy birthday to me?

On the lighter side, Derry Girls?

Angela’s Ashes for personal “troubles.” Not exactly light, bit it does have its moments.

I loved Angela’s Ashes as a novel. Wry and clever. Did it translate well to film?
