Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Me, too. I loved the book so much, and the movie reviews weren’t great so I didn’t want to see it.

Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Netflix series called Rebellion.

I thought so, but no movie is ever better than the book.

Probably true, but I think the movie version of The Big Short had some wonderful devices to communicate complex concepts. (I love Michael Lewis’s writing including The Big Short).

Just watched Conclave on Amazon Prime. Excellent, but I really really hope the actual conclave is nothing like it.

That could be an interesting new thread!

There was a news piece today about how many people have bought/watched Conclave since Monday. I think it went back to #1 on the charts.

I think the actual one if very similar to the one depicted. The movies I’ve seen with the conclave are similar. There are 130ish cardinals eligible to participate (cardinals under 80 years olds). Pope Francis elevated 108 of them. Most don’t know each other. Most of the ones in Rome are the older ones so not eligible to vote.

I meant the secrets and drama and…no spoilers! It was a thriller, after all.

135 out of the total 252. I was surprised there were so many 80+

I meant that too. It is all very political. For that reason I think the next pope will be one of the Italians, probably the younger one as the older one is already 80 (of the favorites; there are more than 2 Italian cardinals).

I think the movie had more truth to it than people realize about the wheeling and dealing, catholics and non-catholics.

We’re watching “UnBroken” on Netflix. A documentary about seven German Jewish siblings who all survived the Holocaust. It just dropped today. It’s really good.

I had no idea that there was an age limit for voting but no such limit to be eligible to be elected.

BBC has a rundown of the potential candidates:

Ok, back to movies.

I agree. My sister worked for her Catholic church for several years and the political strife between the conservatives and progressives was unbearable at times. It eventually drove them away from that location.

My brother always checks to see what the Vegas odds on for any major political event.

The one to watch is Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Currently the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

You might enjoy Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street, which is a documentary series on Netflix; it engagingly illustrates how his Ponzi scheme was constructed (and fell apart).

Thanks. Will take a look.

I finally watched Conclave–just in time! It kinda jumped the shark at the very end but great performances all around.

I just saw Sinners in IMAX - it was a birthday gift for my kid. I don’t want to spoil anything because this movie was so much more than I thought it was going to be. Labeling it a horror flick is a huge disservice. It is a tribute to the endurance of black culture. It reminds us of the legacy of racism and violence. It uplifts family and friend connections. I highly recommend, but caution that it is gory.

I found this explanation of the different choices he made with aspect ratios and different film stocks really fascinating:

We watched The Return last night. Ralph Fiennes plays Ulysse who is trying to get back home to Penelope. I loved this time period as a kid and hoped it’d be good. We turned it off after about 15 min, something we rarely do. There was no energy to it and it didn’t feel like it would improve. You do get to see a full frontal view of Mr. Fiennes a couple of times in those 15 min. It wasn’t pretty lol.

We decided to use our Disney plus subscription and watch the original animated Beauty and the Beast. We had forgotten how much we love that movie. It’s probably been 20-25 years since we saw it. They were so much better than vs the stuff they put out now.
