Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

My youngest D, her husband, and a friend are coming to visit over the 4th of July and they requested that we rent Jaws. It’s been 50 years since it came out!!

You aren’t alone! Maybe we could see it together :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Just saw “Sinners” streaming (it had been in theaters). I’m a horror junkie, but it went beyond horror. The first hour was fantastic, the second hour was more traditional horror but with a cultural twist (don’t want to give it away).

The music is amazing.

If you watch, make sure you watch completely through the very end of the credits.

We just saw that this weekend too. H loved it in the theater. I don’t see horror in theaters. I need an out if necessary. I enjoyed it very much as well

We saw the new Superman movie on Tuesday. Only $6.50 a person if you go before 7.

I really really wanted to like it. I liked most of the actors and thought many did what they could with the movie well. I hated what they did with his parents!

But once H told me mid way it was the same director as Guardians of the Galaxy, it all made sense. It’s very much the same - the constant dumb slapstick humor. And while that grates on my nerves even in guardians of the galaxy, it works for that movie world. It does not work for Superman. And many of the action scenes are just too much twirling and whirling and chaotic for me. That is the case for me with many action movies.

But some scenes are done really well. I loved the Hall of Justice. And Superman racing out of the atmosphere was a very cool scene too. The dog was cute; but even he grated on my nerves. And as I said, the actors who played Superman, Lois, Jimmy, etc I thought did a good job. I’d give it a 6/10

I loved it! I was so happy that the Superman narrative was shaken up and it wasn’t the same old movie again. No spoilers, but there were definitely surprises.

I saw Dídi, a coming of age movie about a Taiwanese American boy, his family, and his friends Summer 2008.

Highly recommend.

I thought it was good. Cartoony and campy, but to be expected from a movie directed by James Gunn.

The dog the played Krypto was the highlight for me.

I enjoyed the homage to the Hall of Justice and the use of some lesser-used superheroes. My only criticism on the Justice Gang is I would have preferred the Hal Jordan/Kyle Raynor/John Stewart version of Green Lantern to Guy Gardner. And I wouldn’t have casr Nathan Fillion in that role.

But otherwise, nice, mindless fluff.

I felt like the dog’s cuteness was forced on us. Like how dare you not like the movie because this cute dog is in it. It felt like when I went to my now defunct yoga studio and an instructor would bring her dog - not a class advertised as having dogs - and you were expect to be happy and ooh and ahh over its presence. If you didn’t, you were a bad person. And there were times when I could tell the actors were using a green screen. It’s pretty rare that I notice that kind of thing

I thought the scenes with the justice league characters were all rushed. I liked Mr Terrific. I even lol at some of his lines - which is rare for me in a theater. But I felt like I never got to know him. He was just there. In contrast, I felt like we got to know shapeshifting guy. I liked those parts. But no offense to hawk girl, but you could have deleted all her parts and the movie would have been just the same.

It just felt like too much was thrown at you that had little to no value - mostly the constant dumb humor. It should be comic relief - not constant.

But it’s getting great reviews, so I guess I’m in the minority. I’ll get back in my rocker now with my tapioca pudding.

As a quick aside, I read a cute article saying the dog in the new Superman movie was inspired (looks, behavior, etc.) by the director’s own rescue dog. Apparently there has been an increase in dog rescues – hopefully by people who first carefully consider the responsibility of dog ownership.

PSA that Wicked is now on Amazon Prime. So if, like me, you’ve been waiting until it was free, now’s your chance if you have Prime.

Although I’ve seen so many clips I’m not sure how much will be new .

Saw Fantastic 4 with my 2 teenage daughters. We all liked it a lot more than Superman. Kids said the movie reminded them of being in Tomorrowland.

Looking forward to watching the Bob Dylan movie with subtitles on Hulu. I loved it in the theater but missed a lot of the dialog.

We saw Jurassic World Rebirth yesterday. The theater was full (50-60 people.) That’s the most full theater I’ve been in since Covid. Movie and cast was good, even if it is the same basic story, again and again.

Sitting in the theater during the credits of Fantastic Four. Now that was a great superhero action movie.

Don’t miss the mid-credits scene

We didn’t. And the one at the end either. H always insists

I recently saw Black Bag, and loved it. It has a great cast, including Cate Blanchett, Micheal Fassbender, Naomi Harris and Pierce Brosnan, and they are all terrific. It is a small, neat, spy thriller that focuses on plot and characters, rather than stunts and explosions.

On a tangent, the last few years Pierce Brosnan has taken some juicy roles where he plays the bad guy, including Mobland, The Foreigner and Black Bag, and he has shined.

I loved Sinners, largely because it did not fit neatly into the horror or vampire genres. The movie weaves together several stories and themes very nicely. I was already a fan of Micheal B. Jordan and Haylee Steinfeld, but I really liked Jack O’Connel (Remmick).
