Sharing, Venting, Supporting Class of 2018

I live in an area where it’s got to be Ivy, “potted Ivy” or (maybe) Juilliard. Even NYU is looked upon as a school for kids who couldn’t make it into an Ivy. CMU-- are you kidding? That’s Pittsburgh! So when I say my daughter goes to Fordham, I always steel myself against the inevitable look of pity. It’s just a little running joke…inside my own head! :D

Hi everyone, I’m new, but I’ve been lurking for a while. A few questions…1) Will Boston mail the letters on Saturday, meaning that we won’t likely get them until Tuesday? 2) Does anyone know anything about the Generalist program at University of Evansville and whether it is equivalent to the BFA? 3) Is Fordham still sending out admissions, or should we interpret no letter by now as a bad sign? Thank you! I’'m right in the same boat with everyone. My daughter applied to 14 schools, she is in the BFA at Chapman, the BA at Muhlenberg, BA at USC, BA at University of Texas (she wanted the BFA and says that they are dead to her now), and the Theatre Generalist program at University of Evansville. We are waiting for BU, CMU, Fordham, Northwestern, DePaul and Columbia. The waiting is hard-:)

BU should be on your child’s portal on the 22nd. :)

BU is online I heard. There is an email and then you check your portal. Supposedly it is cute with banners on the website and everything because it is for all freshmen not just theatre.

Txdramamama, sounds like your daughter already has great choices–good luck with the rest! Re: Evansville, I would do a careful comparison of the BFA and BA curricula, and absolutely visit the school in person (not on “admitted students weekend”) if you haven’t already. Also, do a search on this forum for Evansville–you’ll find helpful info, I think. Our impression was that the theater generalist degree is not the equivalent if a BFA but that the school promotes it a lot. Their BFA has a strong reputation for preparing graduates to audition for MFA programs.

I will do that. Thanks everyone. Visiting schools is a challenge. In Texas we are in the middle of One Act Play competition. Whether weekends in April are free or not depends on how far they advance in the competition. I do agree that we won’t be able to really tell about that program without visiting and talking to students who are in it.

Uggg! Warning Major Vent ahead:

My son is on the phone with Pace admissions as I type this. He applied to the school after his walk in audition and didn’t realize they did not get all of his materials via common app. THIS WHOLE time his application has been incomplete with the university. I double checked with him to make sure it was complete weeks ago… but didn’t push and didn’t check myself. (I did with the other schools though!)

I’ve been back and forth between how much of this to let him handle on his own and how much to “help” and look over his shoulder. I don’t want to be a helicopter parent!
He is growing up and this is his journey… and the paperwork and bureaucracy involved is tough stuff to navigate, even for a seasoned adult. :frowning: I don’t want him to have to pay a high price for a simple lesson.

I’m trying to relax and breathe…

oh gosh, how stressful. Are they withdrawing their offer?

I would have to believe they will let him submit what is missing especially if they have already offered him a spot. This stuff is so complicated. Much more so than just a regular admission. You would think they would have sent him something on college board or email about stuff that was missing. Hang in there. I will send positive energy out to you!! :)

We are in a similar boat at another school. NO, I repeat, NO 17-year-old can navigate this bureaucratic morass, they ALL need our help with this, and it doesn’t make us into helicopter parents.

Headed to NYC on Monday…any suggestions of plays to see?

I was there with my orchestra three weeks ago and we saw Newsies and Phantom…Great shows but Book of Mormon should be good.

Thanks for the warm thoughts! He had a heck of a time trying to get the common app to work but I think we are going to be OK! He talked to helpful people at the admissions office and Maria who works there gave him her email and he emailed the missing things directly to her.
Ya for Pace admissions and Maria!
Now if only they could do something about that kids mother… geesh. She needs to chill.

PS. jkellynh17, they didn’t withdrawal anything, I was just freaking out.

Oh good, sounds like it will all work out. If we moms didn’t freak out periodically, none of this would ever get done.

Bissou, if your D is going with you, Newsies is a MUST see! There’s nothing quite like a cast full of extremely talented/attractive dancing men.

bisouu, wish I could come with you!

Bijouu. Friend of men said Rocky was really cool!

Bridges of Madison County with Kelli O’Hara. There are probably discounted tickets at TKTS or online with a code.

I work a block from the half price tickets booth - the hottest shows lately that are half price are Kinky Boots, Matilda, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. You’re going at the perfect time. Once spring arrives, it will be very hard to get tickets to these shows. The audiences are raving about these 3 shows.

Pippin is amazing as well.
