Should I transfer to Vanderbilt from UMD CS?

I am currently a freshman at the University of Maryland. I have declared a double major for CS and Business Management, am in an honors program/club, and have joined a few other clubs. I am also in a great sorority and love my friends/social life. I am overall very happy at Maryland, but I am not sure I want to go into SWE. However, I have an offer to transfer to Vanderbilt next year to double major in Applied Math and Computer Science. I would be starting over club-wise and friend-wise. What should I do? Does the Vandy name and reputation make it worth it to switch?

You are happy where you are. I’m having trouble understanding why you would transfer.

You’re doing great at UMD and sound happy. Why transfer?
(+ UMD CS > Vanderbilt CS)
The only reason I could envision is if Vanderbilt were cheaper.

UMD is a top Computer Science program, while Vanderbilt is solid, but nowhere near UMD. not. There is no benefit to transferring to Vanderbilt, unless you will be saving a good chunk of money.

Any advantage to your second major being Applied Math versus Business Management ? This, along with any difference in cost, should be your focus.

In answer to your specific question, no the name and reputation of Vanderbilt University does not make it worthwhile to forego a CS major and related honors program at the University of Maryland. As you probably know, the University of Maryland is highly regarded for its CS major. Since your honors program focuses on real world practical problem solving involving multiple disciplines including CS & engineering plus business, you are already well ahead of most CS majors.

With respect to your concerns about a career as a SWE, you are already addressing this by undertaking a second major in Business Management.
