hmm what do you mean colleges see as a level?

This is unrelated to colleges but have any of y’all worked as a student before? Me and my friend are planning to work for the extra $$ but have no idea if, being below 16, we are allowed to work or not :X

i think that it means that the colleges asses your performance as compared to the level and not just your class, so i think it would be better if you just went to some crap jc? haha

I think he simply means colleges see it as “A Level”. It’s a standardised exam after all and your cert isn’t going to say which school you come from, so 4As from RJ and 4As from xJC makes little difference to the adcoms in terms of proving academic performance (although qualitatively you could argue that the student from the weaker school had fewer resources at his disposal or whatever).

izabel: Yeah, I worked part time in JC2 (WHAT WAS I THINKING? liked the job though so no biggie) but that doesn’t answer your question, haha. There definitely are JC students who work part-time during the school term, but not a lot compared to poly students. As for <16… I think things like flyer distribution during the holidays shouldn’t be an issue. I don’t know about jobs like retail or office work though.

I mean that they see it as a level, like your rank across the whole sec3. And no, it doesn’t help if you are in a bad school since they actually still look at standardised tests and if you got ranked first merely because of the easy courseload, the tests will show.

I am working now, during the free weekends and hoildays. Hehe. Ask me personally if you want to join. Being 14/15, you can’t go for flyer distribution(minimum 16) and office work(they want at least A levels) unless your mum is in the office or something. At the last resort, you might want to try McDonald or something, though I would say @$4/hour, the pay is meagre.

Has anyone gotten into USC from Singapore?

^Yup, I did!

^ Same here. lettersfrompluto, where did you get into? Marshall?

We should find all Singaporeans who are headed for SC and travel there together! :)

I got into the Viterbi School of Engineering. Marshall is the school of…?
I don’t know if I would go to USC in the end, since I have other schools which haven’t replied me yet… BUT definitely, I would want to know Singaporeans who are going to the same college as I am! :)

who is going to USC for sure ?

Hee hee I’m either going to get rejected or get a very annoyed letter from USC over my certification of finances letter - or lack thereof. I haven’t been able to send it in since scholarship season isn’t over yet, and I told USC so - but there’s no chance they’ll get the letter before Apr 1st no matter how the scholarships decide.

But nope, heard from my first choice school already - even if I get accepted to USC, which I probably won’t be because it was the first and sloppiest app I sent in, I won’t be going. Have fun in LA, all of you :)

NYU is great too, I applied there as well but was rejected, though now I wouldn’t dream about going anywhere else besides SC! NYC is probably the only US city that is on the same level as LA in terms of the sheer number of things to do and places to visit!

mv3, I’d say I’m 90% sure of going to SC, its just that I haven’t confirmed their offer. I was leaning towards the UK for a while but I changed my mind. Who else is headed for LA? Be it USC, UCLA, Pomona, Caltech or any other college in SoCal.

@ycang Since you seem so intent on eliciting a response, I’ll bite–even though admissions results aren’t out.

My #2 choice, behind Princeton, is Harvey Mudd College in Pomona (SoCal, right?) It’s a low match for me stats-wise but I applied for FA so that’s more difficult.

Yea I have to agree there is a pretty significant gap between your first and second choices. Its like, woah Princeton, then… Harvey Mudd? Its a good school but if you tell the layman here in SG that you go to Harvey Mudd, you’d get more than a few strange looks. Sad but true :(

Is it true that chewing gum is illegal in your country  ,as well as long hair and short skirts for ladies ?

CR7_ManUtd…

dont be so ignorant! i recommend you come and visit singapore to get a feel of what life is really like. and i can guarantee you that you ll have an amazing time! can i just rub 4-1 to liverpool in your face. k thanks.

ycang…

youre so lucky you got into SC. i wanna go there so bad. Im jsut waiting to hear. i have a bad feeling i wont make it… i really really hope i do though. oh well. by the way did you go to an international school in sg?

No, no and no.

Chewing gum (n) is not illegal. Chewing (v) gum is not illegal. The sale of chewing gum (except those with medicinal properties) is illegal.

Long hair and short skirts for ladies, I can’t even begin to imagine where you got that from… Singapore really is just like any other city. Our drug possession/consumption laws are strict, there’s a law against littering (but there are rubbish bins practically everywhere - EXCEPT MRT STATIONS :frowning: - so it doesn’t really matter), and by law if you eat/drink on the train/bus you can get fined but it doesn’t really happen. Pick a big city in your country (Romania/Bulgaria?) and it’s probably similar.

I know there’s a gap in prestige/selectivity but Mudd’s a good fit for me and it gives excellent education! There are also two additional reasons: During my A*Star scholarship interview, I asked the panel about HMC and it was recommended strongly, like really strongly. And also, the Claremont consortium may be setting up a LAC in SG with NUS, so I think there may be opportunities to get involved.

I wrote this for my juniors in HC, but thought it might be appropriate to post it here as well:

Hahaha why should i go to Singapore ?To get a life sentence for smoking in a restaurant or to catch AIDS from ill prostitute hahahah
