Singaporean connection

heyyy! quick question! (:

just a random discussion a friend and i had…

say, if i want to come back to singapore as a non-singaporean (or anywhere else in asia, for that matter) after getting my undergrad degree, would i have better job prospects if i do my degree from UCLA (computer science and engg + maybe a minor/double-major in mathematical econs) or from NUS (computer engineering + university scholars’ programme + 100% scholarship + might take a double degree with a BBA (as likely or unlikely as the minor/double-major at UCLA)… so whatsay? :)

oh- and in terms of job-prospects at the biggies and starting salaries ONLY! (: (:

Hey there! Quick question.

I got my June SAT subject test scores:
Math II 800
Chem 800
Physics 710

Only two schools I’m applying to require 3 SAT Subject Tests, and one of those schools offers score choice. Just wondering if I should retake my Physics?

sorry if this offends anyone here
but seriously, if you want to give examples, there are plenty of foreign students in singapore you can talk about. don’t point at the prc as examples.

to me, the prc students are the type of students who either mug or play dota all day. they only mix with their chinese fellows. they never mix with friends from other countries. a typical prc is one who cannot even speak English properly.
and it must be realized that they could get into top JCs because they could use chinese, chinese lit. While the scholars from other countries are struggling to get 7 or 8 points for Olevel, they can get 6pts easily. (and note that the most of the prc got crappy score for english) and this continue in JC where it’s quite easy to realize that very few prc (or almost none) takes subjects like lit, hist, geo, or even econs.
also another fact: it’s hard to find any prc scholar in CCAs such as debate club, choir, sports… it’s always chinese society, chinese drama, chinese blah blah
they may appear good on paper with perfect sat scores and straight As, but in terms of personality, the prc are absolutely not impressive

i know this may be an overgeneralization, some prc are really smart. but for sure, that number is very very small. the majority of the prc scholars follow that type.
to me, the prc don’t deserve to be shown as examples

In what industry? You probably will have somewhat better prospects in investment banking or management consulting, but if you are really going to work in the IT industry, I suppose the difference is not that great.

If you are taking H2 Physics for your A-levels, I’d say take it again.

The PRCs may not be sociable with others and all that, but you have to admit that they are smart and get into top universities with amazing regularity. The admissions people from HYPSM and all must see something in them that cause them to take in such large numbers (relatively speaking) of PRCs than “born and bred” Singaporeans.

Have you read this? [Young scholar aims at physics, finance, and the physical — The Harvard University Gazette](http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/2009/06.04/cong.html) PRC scholar from my school who went to Harvard for undergrad and will be going to Stanford for grad school. Amazing fellow, I think.

What do most sporean students do after college if they are not on scholarships? Would they normally stay in US or come back to sgp for a job- esp now with the economy?

*say, if i want to come back to singapore as a non-singaporean (or anywhere else in asia, for that matter) after getting my undergrad degree, would i have better job prospects if i do my degree from UCLA (computer science and engg + maybe a minor/double-major in mathematical econs) or from NUS (computer engineering + university scholars’ programme + 100% scholarship + might take a double degree with a BBA (as likely or unlikely as the minor/double-major at UCLA)… so whatsay?

thanks for replying, frank!
i’m looking towards management or finance! oh- and so i’m def. better off with a UCLA degree than a NUS one, right? since- in no way would i have lesser options than a NUS dude. also, just curious if anyone knows… lol… why are IT people SOOOO underpaid in singapore (compared to the US and EU)?

how exactly is a person considered for admission say if he goes overseas to study? under the citizenship he is holding or the country he graduated from?

^ The country he graduated from would be key. His citizenship status is a distant second (unless he is an American of course).

^ really meh? I thought schools would prefer to take students from more countries? i.e. they want students of diverse citizenships?

^ Well I don’t think that is as important as your educational background - like the PRC scholars in Singapore gets grouped with Singaporeans, not with the China-based applicants.

Anyway, they could get plenty of foreign citizens (with American green cards) in the US.

just got back my SAT IIs. World History 800, Maths II 780, Chem 800
good/ not good?

^Assuming you’ll easily get 800 for SAT Reasoning Math, then I think your SAT II scores are good enough.

^ And it depends on where you are going to apply.

lol you guys are way too harsh. that’s a fantastic set of scores!

fantastic, eh? even for say hyp?

Yes fantastic. You’re set.

^ Erm, spend more time on your SATs (maybe after A level?) As a humanities student you should aim for a higher SAT I score and you should take subjects like Math2 and Lit for SAT II. Don’t bother taking SAT Chinese - it’s a waste of your time and money.

Other than that you should organize your CCA list. Too messy as it is.

Jerrie, yup don’t take chinese! But if you want to, you should be comfortably getting an 800. a 760 is only 26th percentile! Since you don’t take H2 Bio, I don’t think you should take SAT Bio. It’s very different from O Level bio. But I guess you can buy a guidebook and just mug it.

Go for Math Level II like 1234d said. Since you do H2 Math, Math II should be a breeze for you. The Lit SAT Test is pretty challenging because it’s quite unlike the Lit we do (that’s why I heard from my friends who do H2 lit and took the lit subject test).
