Nadash: I think i might need aid, but it should be minimal since i would have some external source of funding, coupled with some parents contribution…

Hi! Hello do you think my activities record would be good enough for a comm. Studies program in a good usa university eg. Cornell and also for a scholarship? Do you have any other suggestion for any good universities in USA which offers Comm studies or media studies? Thanks!

Also, I failed my Chinese in secondary school (D7), will they take that into account? But I got A for my A levels, so can it help to offset this? Thanks! =)

Other questions: How much should I aim for SAT II? I am taking biology (thought it can be sth different since I am arts student), mathematics II and Chinese?

I was very ‘naughty’ in secondary school like i got caught for leaning against a male student shoulder in the mrt and some ******* sent the pic to sch, i also got caught for mass cheating in lower sec and for scolding vulgarities to my class monitor cos she reported me! and a hell lot of attire problems! But i didn’t get suspended or expelled, just like booking and demerit pt! But in jc i didn’t break any rules at all, will this get in my way if i applying for govt scholarship?

jerrie: if you’re an arts student why don’t you take world history or literature instead? i don’t think your SAT bio and chinese are going to help you much.

lol i only applied for a few scholarships but as far as i know, they don’t really care about such trivial things. of course it’d be a different thing if you’ve been to jail or sth.

“3. Blog entries got featured on tomorrow.sg”

actual accomplishments please, 5/6ths of your list is fluff

This is strange advice.

This is America, guys, not neo-Confucian know-your-place Asian-values NUS.

What’s wrong with SAT Bio? It depends on the school on how admissions folks look at Singaporeans doing SAT Chinese (to me, being polylingual is in achievement in itself) but I’ll definitely tell you that science-illiterate journalists are a huge pain for academics. (see: Science News cycle – <a href=“PHD Comics: So productive”>PHD Comics: Science News Cycle)

look, jerrie is an arts/humanities student and she’s currently revising arts/humanities subjects for her A Levels. are you seriously expecting her to do very well for a science subject that she hasn’t touched in years?

So what? You seem very desperate to include a little Singapore-bashing in your argument.

admission officers certainly won’t be impressed by yet another Chinese student getting 800 for SAT Chinese. plus, she already got A for her A Level Chinese, which I believe to be more rigorous than SAT Chinese anyway.

Oh I thought you were talking about whether doing well in SAT Bio would help her application. I don’t see why not.

Too many people are infected with this Asian neo-Confucian cookie-cutter mentality (no it doesn’t just affect Singapore; I love other parts of Singaporean culture to tiny widdle bits). “OMG you’re an arts student, if you take other things that interest you but don’t comply with your concentration you’ll be seen as unfocused / rebellious.”

I hadn’t touched a lot of the bio material in years when I took it almost cold (I flipped through a study guide the night before … ), but a lot of the questions can be answered or BS’ed without any prior knowledge.

For example, you almost don’t need to know anything about female reproductive cycles if you just interpret the hormone level graphs with some common sense and see what is affecting what. (For ecology, it also helps if you are familiar with resource-gathering games. That’s almost the secret to doing well in undergraduate ecology – playing lots of strategy games. Okay and a bit of multivariable math, but none of it is present in SAT or AP Bio.)

I think it depends on the school. Have admissions officers actually commented about this? The common American may think otherwise, but it’s impressive to be multilingual. It’s especially impressive to be trained in the literary corpora of multiple languages. This could also be tied in to some essay statements, especially if you feel language defines you.

If she already has an A for A-level Chinese, then yes she should choose another subject. Mandarin is an interesting language, it’s certainly a feat for me to be fluent in it after losing it in American elementary school. (I’m going to try especially hard this summer, but I’m way past the critical window wheeeee…)

Oh cos i am applying to one of the UC schools, so i was thinking the 800 might help me cos UC goes by point system and stuff yea! I didn’t take history because i take geog in school and history has a lot to memorise. i find biology interesting and its one of my main passions. The sch i am applying to is college of agri and life sci so its like kind of related too but i didnt take bio in jc because in jc its not like organs or animals and stuff, its mainly about molecules and like chemical reactions of protein and stuff like that.

Molecular bio is fun – it helps you understand how single tiny cells can be so amazing. Anyway, SAT Bio has separate Ecology and Molecular Bio sections. I opted for molecular bio because that part gets taught first in AP Bio, but both materials are covered (to lesser depth) in the united sections.

I think the traditional segregation between ecology and molecular bio alienates students too much. When you do basic bio research in college, you find that the two “fields” usually cannot afford to be segregated. The lab I’m part of is developing a population dynamics model for multilevel selection, using *Silene latifolia/i as a model organism – but in order to study group selection effects and things like that, you have to census the population genetically, and suddenly you find yourself dealing with PCR mutations, neutral fingerprint markers, statistical analysis of possible mating patterns, the finer points of meiosis, etc.

They really should bring C. elegans into the HS classroom. At 959 cells, it’s in that middle ground between molecular bio and “macrobiology”. And its embryology is simply fascinating.

Yep, I agree. I think the segregation is due to the fact that molecular biology historically developed from organic chemistry while ecology and other “large-system” biology historically developed from botany and zoology.

do your think biology can be done in a short time span and get a nice score on the examinations? i mean, in the O levels, it was pure memory work which as teachers nicely put it ‘throw it all back at the teachers during the exams in order to get a nice grade’, so is it like that too at A levels, or is there more application? i realised that i made the worst decision in my life to take physics at A levels, so im considering about taking bio since i will be going overseas soon, not about to shoot myself again in the head once more by taking that…

Are you talking APs or some other standardised exam?

the International B…

^ i think that should prepare you adequately for sat bio?

IB Bio is pure memorisation with 24% markchasing from rigid lab writeups. A bit of logic doesn’t hurt (helps understand processes and stuff) but a good memory (plus effort) pretty much sets you up. For SAT II Bio, depending on the pace of your IB class you may have to self-study a bit before taking that exam but SAT Bio material is almost a subset of IB Bio material I think.

(I did IB Bio HL)

hi guys,

all i’m in possession of are the usual o-cert and a diploma in design. i no longer wish to further my education in art and am looking to study anthropology in college. seeing that i do not have an a-cert of sorts, what is my best option? how can i go about sussing out a school that’d allow me to pursue a different path without judging my background too much?

thanks very much

okay, i just might take bio for IB…

I’ve taken my SAT and I got 2240 (CR 730/Math770/Writing 740) and SAT II I took Math II and Lit, which I got 740 and 730 for respectively.

Should I retake in October? From what I’ve read here, it’s probably not good enough (I’m aiming for Berkeley) and I’m taking H2 Math, so by right I know I can get a 800 for Math II if I don’t make careless mistakes. What are your opinions on this?

I think your score is quite alright for UCB. try to work on your essay (essay and SAT are the only two things they look at``)
