Hey jerrie, not all schools offer early admission policies with financial aid so you gotta be careful. Eg. UChicago does NOT offer finaid to internationals applying early while Penn does. As for your hypothetical situation, it can’t happen - they will only accept you if they can meet your demonstrated need. Ofcourse do realize it’s very difficult to get in as an int’l applying for fin.aid.

Hi nadash! What do you mean by lose the ability to compare awards?

Hi hello themerlion, i just checked that the university which is my first choice and it says “If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., Canada, or Mexico…Financial aid decisions for international students are not made until March.” So what does this mean? =(

Also the website says “For early-decision, plan to take the SAT before November, or the ACT by October. Take the SAT Subject Tests no later than November, as the scores are used in the early-decision process.” if I am taking my SATs in Oct and SATs Subject Test in Nov, I will have to submit my scores via collegeboard is it since the deadline for early decision application is 1st Nov? But i have to indicate it that I am sending my scores later on the form right? haha.

Psc scholarship? Is it the overseas merit thingy? But my behaviour record in secondary school was bad, like I had demerit points for being seen lying on sb shoulder in the mrt and for cheating in a science test in sec two and another one for scolding vulgarities.erm… would they take such stuff into consideration? =(

Thanks for answering my queries. I think this website is really so useful and all the singaporeans here are so friendly and helpful to me! =) Its really great! =) Xie xie everyone who helped me

You are talking about ED right? I think it means that the school can only consider your finaid application after looking through the other international students applying for aid. Which actually makes sense because there’s usually a limited fund for internationals.

Yeah, you can indicate your test date (Nov) on your Common App and have your SATs sent to your colleges as soon as they are released.

PSC scholarships can refer to OMS, SGS, SAFOS etc etc. Eh I don’t think they really look at those minor things but I would say these scholarships are fairly competitive.

when u apply ED, one of the disadvantages is that u cant compare financial aid awards if u’re accepted (since u’re only applying to one school)

hence schools tend not to see the need to give out competitive aid packages, which they might otherwise do during RD to attract students they really want. remember every school evaluates financial need differently so aid packages will actually differ. some schools (generally not the top ones though) even give out merit based awards/scholarships, bond free of course

financial aid for intls has always been limited and in the light of how the economy has affected colleges’ endowment, even more so now. if u need financial aid it might be worth it to consider the need blind schools

Doing a PSC internship helps a lot if you want those scholarships. My friend got to know a lot of staff in MOE where he worked and subsequently he was pretty much -shooed in- to OMS. Ofcourse he did get admitted into a top college when he was applying.

If you apply ED and are accepted you are obligated to attend regardless of how much financial aid you are offered. If financial aid is a major deliberation point for you, you should not apply ED. You can apply EA which is non-binding, but not ED unless you are prepared to attend if accepted. It doesn’t matter if you are international or US citizen. You sign a document avowing to this and if you do not abide, there are potential consequences.

Actually I don’t think working at MOE makes much difference to PSC scholarship application although it must have helped a little. Certainly doesn’t make one a shoe in for OMS.

Hey guys, I’m looking for some advice with regards to US unis.

I’m currently serving NS now, I should be going to uni next year. My best local acceptance is NUS FASS but I’m not so keen on it.

Got the following grades for A lvls in 2007,

h1 PW-B, CL-B
h2 ABBC (Maths, KI, Physics, Econs)
GP should be B if KI is considered in-lieu

I took SAT I and got 2090 (M/CR/W 710/730/650) only. Intend to take SAT II (Maths & Phys) in Oct and retake SAT I in Nov. I should be able to improve my SAT I score drastically and get close to 800 for SAT II.

My EC is nothing special, just a normal member in a writing club and uniformed group. Also no significant CIP or leadership :/

My primary interests are in business and social sciences. I would name some of the schools I’m thinking of applying to but I’m just afraid that I’d be laughed at because compared to the other profiles on this site my results just look damn cui and I don’t think I stand much of a chance.

What schools should I be looking at? I’ll be glad to provide more information if required. Also what else can I do? Some of my friends suggested to chiong community college and transfer but I don’t know leh.

Just regret waking up too late. Didn’t have much information when I was younger and only during NS did I realise how I wasted my sec school and jc life away…

just curious, but what exactly makes a STELLAR extra-curriculars activity list?

some comments on mine please?

Long term service at old-folks home

Raising funds for the disabled

Leadership in Scouts

Represented school and nation in overseas programms for scouts

Service to country during actual NDP(thats what the teacher wrote in my SGC)

Teaching at an tuition centre for underpriveleged? (doing it this year, the rest were done in sec sch, and listed in SGC)

“4. Represented school and nation in overseas programms for scouts”

Sounds good. The others are just well quite alright, but nothing STELLAR. Again, as I’ve said some number of posts ago - stellar would be something like 4 Singapore math/science olympiad golds or 2 SSEF golds or some international olympiad things. For community service, it maybe raising say S$100k for Citibank YfC etc… (and yes - these all have been done before).

omg…you got to be kidding man…i was like one of the best students in my graduating cohort for the cca’s if im not wrong, but then again, almost all scouts get that…so, other than 100k for fundraising, any other suggestions? i mean, something that is kind of achievable for a ordinary youth?

Hermann: fyi there were 2 ex rj students who were very enthu about scout/cip stuff and they’re going to harvard and dartmouth respectively. of course they had many other achievements as well.

i don’t think schools in the US would understand what the **** pw is all about…
pw and h3 only appears in your alvl cert
and the fact is that you’re gonna have to send in your prelim score.
so don’t bother about all those useless things like pw or h3 or even SGC…
