Singaporean connection

you want to study in singapore ?? man, NOBODY wants to study in singapore. heck, that’s why this thread is so long to begin with.

i think it should be pretty easy for a foreigner to get in. our government sucks so hard that they give preference to foreigners instead of their own people. NTU is populated by ~40% foreigners estd. not too sure about NUS/NTU

lol… you can apply to NTU/NUS/SMU with your reasoning and subject scores. NUS’s University Scholars Programme is quite good btw from what i’ve heard.

I’d say this thread is more suited for S’pore applicants to US colleges =p

Hey, I’m filling out my common apps now, but I was just wondering what do I do for the final report, midyear report and secondary school report? Also, besides the scores transcript for predicted A Lvls and O Levels and Sec 4 EOY as well as all the CCA and CIP certs, will there be anything else that I need to attach?
Common App is a killer and I suck at filling in forms, especially with foreign terms like ‘midyear report’ so anyyyy help is really appreciated here. (:

question: if i’m a private O level candidate, what would i be having to fill in for mid year and stuff ? i doubt my prelims/mid-year reports have much meaning, if any.

also, if say i took 6 subjects but didn’t do well for one of them, would i be able to not put that in ? an F hardly looks good in any application. i’d just be using the 5 that i scored proper grades in.

any ideas ??

You will be treated the same as a home-schooled candidate I guess. Look up on how they represent their courses on the Common Application.

Also, I don’t think you can leave out one subject unless you are going to cut out that line from your results slip/certificate then send it to universities.

can i do that then ? cut out that line i mean. not showing it at all is a whole lot better than showing an F. i haven’t actually taken the exam yet, but based on what i’ve been scoring so far, i don’t see myself getting higher than a D, which is still horrible.

and also, how much can a good SAT score help ?? i mean, if i have so-so O level scores but a decent SAT score, will that help me in any way ??

i have people here telling me that standardized tests have absolutely no value but i find that really hard to believe.

@sputnikmuffin

Your final report is your A’ Level result.
Mid year is your prelim result.
Secondary school report is any other relevant results you want to send in, keeping in mind that “secondary school” in US refers to high school (sec 3 to J2). For my school, I was told to submit promo and sec 3/4 results.

@ben_chia

Good SAT results always help. Although not so much if the school is selective and good SAT scores are considered a given.
Since you are required to submit certified true copies of your result slips or certificates, I doubt that hiding a specific line is a good idea.

i’m planning to go after O levels. will take my SATs later on this year. just to confirm, a normal bachelors is 4 years right ? my friend’s doing 3 since he’s done his A levels. that’s not a really good trade off is it ??

It is four years but Singaporeans on scholarship like to do it in three so that they can squeeze an extra masters into the last year of their sponsored studies.

Thanks JCX!
Just a question, must my midyear be prelim results? Cause my prelim results are really bad and I would really wish to not send it in if I had a choice since I think it’ll put me at a disadvantage :/

^ I could be wrong, but I don’t think Singaporeans use the Mid-Year Report. And you don’t need to send prelim results, only predicted grades. Ask frankchn; he didn’t send his prelim results and got into Stanford.

Alright. (: Thanks! Also, do I need to send in my Project Work grades? :/

I sent the Mid-Year and Final Report together with my form teacher recommendations and my predicted grades and my O-level results. Never did send them my A-level results until after the decision came out. No one said anything.

so there’s absolutely no way for me to omit one grade from my result cert ? crap.

Thanks, frankchn! Sorry to be a bother, but here’s some final questions to clear things up cause all the evaluation forms are getting me really confused!

 1. Secondary School Report = O Level Subjects
 2. Midyear/Final Report = A Level/JC Subjects
 3. Who is the Common App referring to when they’re asking for counselors for the various reports? Do I just get my form teacher to do all 3 reports on top of the Teacher Evaluation he’s filling in for me, and attach the predicted As and my O Level results, or do I actually have to find my secondary school teacher, yada yada?

Check if your school has a customized form that you can use in lieu of the Common App school report.

You don’t need anything from your secondary school teachers. All forms that are to be filled by counsellor should be given to your JC civics tutor so that he/she can mail them to the school together with his/her letter of recommendation in an envelope you prepared.

You can also include any other relevant documents inside that envelope so that you don’t have to mail them separately and hence only need to prepare three envelopes per school (1 for CT and 2 for subject teachers).

You can choose not to submit your prelim grades but I won’t recommend it unless they are really bad. Colleges that regularly accept Singaporeans know that prelims are more rigorous than the actual A’ Level papers.

not sure if you saw my reply in your other thread.
anyway, purdue isn’t a stickler for such things. just do well in you SAT I.
did you consider doing SAT II to make up for your F?

SAT II as in the science tests ?? i was considering it. problem is, i looked through some of the questions and a couple of the chem questions are out of the A level syllabus. SAT I should be okay for me, its only for english and math right ??

sputnikmuffin: Your form teacher handles the Secondary School Report, Mid-Year Report, Final Report and International Supplement. I don’t think your form teacher is allowed to write an additional teacher recommendation for you. You might have to get another subject teacher to write it.

Btw, secondary school =/= the school you did your O-levels in. It refers to the school you spent 9-12 grades in. Therefore, the Secondary School Report (and all the other reports mentioned above) should be filled in by your JC 2 form teacher. S/he will include all your transcripts (O-level, predicted A-level, etc.) with the counselor recommendation, and send the entire package to the university.
