Just wondering: What are your views on ED?
My teacher says he would not advocate ED unless I am a very strong applicant, because they will probably just push me back into RD and that would honestly defeat the purpose. I was thinking (perhaps I wasn’t, but whatever haha) that I should just beat the crowd and apply ED which gives me a better shot than if I apply RD together with a pool of very strong applicants.
Does this logic actually apply, in your opinion?

Your teacher completely missed the point of ED. By applying ED to a school, you are signaling that that school is your first-choice school and you are making a commitment to go if you are accepted.

In view of that, the school may overlook the fact that you may have weaker CCA profiles/results/SAT scores (one of the three). Alternatively, ED is good if you have very high SAT scores but the rest of your application is weaker as it is during this time (and the waitlist rounds) that the admissions department tries to raise the SAT score averages of the school.

hi, just a question, in the commonapp, there are some parts that require CEEB/ACT Code.
I searched on the collegeboard site, there is something called SAT Code assigned to each school/JC in Singapore… so i dont know whether I should fill in or not???

^ Just fill the 6 digit code in for your school from the College Board - you can search for your school’s code here: [SAT Code List Search](http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_code/servlet/searchCodeListServlet?codeSearchAction=CodeSearchHighschool&subSearch=Other)

If you can’t find it, just enter 000000.

Hey guys if i NS finishes on january 2012, is there any way i can defer my last few months and start college on fall 2011 and come back and finish those 5 months instead of 2012?

^ Nope. MINDEF works on an equal-batch basis, so if your school mates in JC are going to NUS in August 2012, you cannot defer your NS to enroll in university in 2011.

Seriously man. This is really sucky. Accepted by Brown, Cornell and Mich for Communications and Political Science (or Government as the major is known) but the dratted problem is that the first two are sub-par (when compared to Mich) in the Arts fields. Don’t know if I should matriculate in Brown and Cornell by merit of their Ivy league status or Michigan for its esteemed position in Politics.

BAH!

^ Err, wait. You can hold multiple offers at once? My Stanford deferral agreement specifically prohibited me from holding/accepting any competing offers.

Ah. I failed to tell you the whole story. I’ll be transferring as a sophomore. So yea, there isn’t anything that prohibits me from accepting competing offers. And anyway, there shouldn’t be a prob doing that as a freshman too? I had multiple offers and I accepted them and they sent all me I-20s.

So how? My conundrum. I really need all the insights I can get man.

then is there a benefit to applying for oms (assuming i get it) and coming back to do NS in full. is it a good thing to do or is best to just finish the damn thing.

That isn’t allowed when you are deferring for a year or more though due to the deferral agreement. It isn’t exactly good form to accept everything either though. Are you transferring to Spring semester?

I think the decision to take on OMS is a bigger issue than just whether you want to serve NS immediately after JC or not. I personally find it no different.

Well, they didn’t specify anything. At least Cornell, Mich and Brown didn’t, or at least not that I noted. Plus it made sense since I wanted to consider all the options I had properly. Furthermore Mich was willing (according to past applicants) to refund the deposit. Spring/Winter session depending on the various universities. Yea.

Mmm. What are you going to be majoring in when you’re at Stanford?

Computer Science and Economics hopefully.

@themerlion

Only take OMS if you find the civil service to be a compelling place to work for. Delaying NS is a horrible reason to do it.

themerlion: wanting to get a OMS just to disrupt from NS would be really myopic. that said, disruption would be a nice bonus if you wanted PSC OMS all along - after your studies you’ll return to work on some higher order and slightly more intellectual projects.

well i worked in the foreign service for a while la (the internship thing) but it did not overly fascinate me or anything. but i think i have a good chance at running for it. the bond thing is what scares me a little. my other option is the lee smthg smthg foundation scholarship (the unheard of one) which is bond free. still need some advice on this. i feel very scared signing away 6yrs cause i might wanna enter academia after college or decide to do some combined masters or doctoral program. help pls :)

do u think being 2/3 years older than your peers is weird in college? these prc/vietnamese scholars must find it weird. this is just one of the big issues for me as juvenile as it may sound.

If you are going to study overseas, then I guess you must deal with it. But then, remember, half the cohort will be 2 years younger than you even if you are going to our local universities.

^

which is in my opinion the dumbest thing that can ever occur to a person…the very prospect of going to school with someone who is 2-3 years younger than me just makes me feel nauseous, for which we must owe the Singapore Government a big Thank You…

yeah i personally feel chics should do military too. it’s like that in most of the other countries where there’s conscription. this is perhaps why singaporean chics r mostly quite shallow and stupid.

e.g. ris low. ps. u should catch her latest interview. it’s boomz^2
