I was helping out to organize the 2nd RCLF, I can tell you it isn’t going to be much help putting that in…

NEFMQ won’t be great unless you guys got champions or at least top 4… Did you manage to get a cert of distinction?

Yeah, it would be good to highlight some things that you got something other than a CoP in. Do you do any sort of voluntary work (not necessarily in school - say with your church or temple, etc) or participate in activities outside school?

Yep, counselor means CT. You could get your J1 CT to write it as a last resort though (if you’ve changed CTs).

Extra-curriculars are defined broadly. Any sort of activity that you participate in on a regular basis (whether official or unofficial, in or outside of school) is considered a EC.

But my CT teaches only chinese, and her english is quite gg…
And when all my ECs are either COP or not worth mentioning + my low SAT score
plus when i look at the difficult college essay questions

Im now super demoralised, doubting my ability sigh. Man I need guidance, assistance and help with this; im a total newbie

hey vsxy can I view your college essay please?

If she is willing, you can ask her to write in Chinese and then get a professional translation company to translate it into English.

BrilliantMinds: Stop feeling so defeatist; it’s not as if sympathy will win you a ticket to college. If you really want to go to a good college, go take some initiative to research on college apps properly and think through how you want to shape your own application. We’re trying to help you here, but nobody can help you if you don’t help yourself.

lol, ok. I shall start by practicing for the upcoming SAT I.

BrilliantMinds: If you’re required to do NS, then you shouldn’t apply to UC Berkeley as it doesn’t allow you to defer admission. (UIUC too, I think, but I could be wrong.) Anyway, your current SAT scores make the Ivies + MIT reaches for you. Even if you did raise them, getting into universities of that calibre would be tough without great ECs and fantastic essays/recommendations.

Hey, should i take the APs too? Will they give me an edge over the rest?

To BrilliantMinds:

There are always liberal arts colleges to consider, many of which(the top few) are comparable to the ivy leagues and the UCs. And considering that most LACS are private, if your stats and you are a match to the school(very important for LACs) then, you could possibly secure a relatively substantial scholarship. But the thing about name recognition is something you have to consider if you’re thinking about coming to Sg 'cause well, Sg is a country run by numbers, statistics and brand names whether you want to admit it or not. Yeah, I’m a vocal advocator of LACs (All schools I applied to are LACs :)) and vocal about how Sg is run, but who isn’t? Gd luck mate.

Hey guys, just to clarify a question that I have: If you have applied early using CommonApp, the application information you have keyed in on CommonApp earlier cannot be changed when you apply under RD right? So am I right to say that I have to stick with the same essay, list of ECs, etc. that I used for my ED application when I choose to apply RD? (My ED app got deferred)

On a side note, is it a good practice to send follow-up material (a short write-up, updated ECs) to the college which I applied ED to (and got deferred) or is there really no need for me to do anything and just wait till April? Thanks!

I remember you can create a duplicate of your Common App and modify it on from there. Look into Common App help for more information I guess.

Yep, sending some follow-up is good. Which university did you apply to?

Thanks for the tip. Found out how to create alternate versions of CommonApp applications from a section within the extremely wordy Instructions page.

Anyway, I applied to Amherst for ED.

Amherst is an amazing school, and it’s nice to see that there are Singaporeans who know that. good luck :)

Hi it’s been a long time since I posted!

This is going to sound silly, but for the achievements section in the CommonApp, HOW MANY ACTIVITIES DO I NEED TO LIST? I listed about 5 activities from sec3 onwards that I really put much time & effort into. You know how it’s like, it’s a numbers thing. I’d just like to know if you guys listed like a bazillion activities or something.

Anyway for those who got into your colleges ED/EA, congratulations (: If only I weren’t so lazy to apply EA. Meh but I wrote my own chances off anyway

^ FWIW, I filled up all seven slots.

i sent in a separate resume

THANKS GUYS. I think I’m filling in all but not sending in a resume:\ I guess all that’s left is to finish 2 more supplements and write the commonapp essay - which is sucking the life out of me.

random question: did you guys apply for financial aid or anything?

^ I didn’t. Won’t qualify anyway.

I’m not really sure how strict the definition of ‘counselor’ is. Both my CTs didn’t teach any of the subjects that I was taking (they were GP teachers, and I was taking KI), so I got my KI teacher to write it instead. Worked fine for me.
