Singaporean connection

im considering an ED at one of the LACs like williams/amherst :)

I’m EA-ing UMich and UC-Chapel Hill. A little worried, cos my sch doesn’t have a nice history of people jumping grades from prelims to A Levels. I got BBCC+B before moderation so… :SSS

I’ve actually gotten quite high results for SAT and SAT II, but I’m scared the disparity between that and my school results would be questioned by them…cos from what I’ve heard, apparently admission officers will suspect fraud or something if your application doesn’t seem coherent. :x

gosh ppl im having a tough time deciding whether to ED Upenn or Dartmouth

does anyone know how many singaporeans apply to williams and amherst a year and how selective W/A really is?

Pretty selective - might not be as selective as some of the upper-end Ivies, but definitely competitive. The applicant pool is also somewhat self-selecting - not everyone would think about applying to an LAC (as opposed to the big Ivies, etc…).

i’ve been lurking here for so long and its finally time for me to apply now… getting very nervous. anyway can anyone recommend me some good lacs to look at that give financial aid to sgporeans and are not so competitive (maybe rank 30+)? definitely not looking for a full ride but my family can’t afford the whole cost. my prelim results were very bad- lots of Ds- and i don’t think being from bishanjc helps.

is amherst really need blind for us singaporeans

not fully need-blind as like harvard, yale, princeton, but definitely more generous with and wiling to give aid compared to almost any other non-need blind school e.g. columbia, duke, penn etc.

oh dear, i thought they were fully need blind :frowning: where did you hear that they werent? and how low do chances get if I applied for FA

sorry for the bombardment of questions

HYPM + Dartmouth and Amherst are still fully need-blind for internationals.

my previous sch’s college counsellor.

BUT that being said, if you are looking for money, amherst is still one of the best places to apply to.

^ were you from bishan jc? if so, i believe the same guy mentioned that MIT is ~75% need blind for internationals. take that as you will.

hey, a quick question:
does anyone know what the admissions rate is for NUS?
their website (in fact, the entire internet) is pretty quiet on that subject, and i have no idea how competitive it is.

Amherst’s website says it’s fully need-blind for internationals, though, so it’d be interesting to know where your college counselor got his secret info from

If by Bishan JC you mean RJ, why don’t you think it helps?

Hi guys if you were to place LSE/Camb BSc/BA Economics within the ranks of US colleges, where will they stand?

I just got back my SAT Reasoning scores, I did about as expected for Critical Reading and Math but had some careless mistakes which prevented me from getting a full score. Writing was quite disappointing though, I scored 68 for the MCQ and 8 for the essay. Any tips on doing better for the essay in particular? The MCQ part can largely be improved by reading grammar books though, rihght?

Hi Guys,

I’m curious about the amount of weightage the adcom gives to JC1 promo grades. The thing is, I have great O Level results, stellar predicted grades for As, and very decent Sec 3 Results, but I screwed up my JC1 Promos by scoring 2 Cs, and a D. Despite the Cs and the D, I scored in the top 5 percentile of my cohort, but this fact is not reflected in my JC1 Final Transcript.

Is it possible for me to not submit my JC1 Transcript ? Or any other way to get around the situation ?

^ ya don’t have to submit

So just to make sure, I can get away with just submitting my Sec 3 Grades, O Level Results, and my prediced grades for now, and later send in my actual A Level results when I get them ? No need for prelims grades right ?
