Singaporean connection

@uuinus: I’m at Berkeley but I’m not sure about transferring into Haas (since I only know about getting in the “normal” way haha). About the foreign language requirement, I think you should just wait for the reply and see what they say. You probably should send the necessary certification in through mail and clarify it, if they haven’t already advised you to do so. Good luck!

@chinnemeiser: As far as I know, Berkeley does not really look at your grades because it’s hard to compare them with the U.S. system. What they really want are your A Level results instead of your promos, Sec 3/4 grades, etc (trust me, I called the personnel up when I applied and they told me that). What I did was I put my 2nd block test grades for that, since your teacher will send the predicted grades - Hwa Chong doesn’t release predicted grades to their students. If your teacher released your predicted grades to you, then put that I guess. In the end it doesn’t matter unless your grades are really, really **** :wink:
@yorknell: RJC is not in any way a large advantage for getting into the top U.S. colleges, so don’t worry! Just concentrate on getting good SAT scores and grades, boost your CCAs, write a kickass essay and everything will work out. I’m sure your target schools will not consider your JC as a big factor in admitting you, because it doesn’t define you as a person.

Waao, a lot of IVY rejection coming from dartmouth, penn and cornell recently :(

^ One here. There was a landslide of Penn ED applications this time round. What luck :(

hi evrybody
@eloriel
thanks your support. however, the fact that i have just got to singapore education at sec 3 might disadvantage me of my cca option. I am not allowed to participate in uniformed groups such as red cross (which is related with my passion) and clubs. i have to choose performing arts where i doesn’t belong to… their reason is because intl student will face dificulties to excel those uniformed groups and cca… i am really sad and disadvantaged… what should I do? do I really have hope?

Aiming at CALS (cornell), NYU, and Ucal berkeley… should i go to other countries AFTER MY O LEVEL?

@TAHUNGAH
Really? how do you know? i’m aiming at cornell in the future…

yorknell: dont worry, enjoy sec life. I suggest u quit Singapore and go straight to US after Os or as soon as possible. Competition from sg to top schools pretty fiercesome.

Take a reasonable private school in US and build up from there-> better

Ya I suggest you take that advice. I’m now worrying whether I’ll be able to even gain acceptance at all

hi everybody…
i have just posted a reply… but i dunno why it doesn’t appear
i should write once again :(:frowning:
that’s fine anyway

@TAHUNGAH and Hugedilema
Thanks… your words are encouraging…

Should I do it after my O lvl or after my sec 3?
should i go to US directly (apply to private school)?
Why should be private school anyway ? I don’t know too much about that actually…
I have never thought this idea… will this give me advtantages? if yes, how far?

how far will i be disadvantaged if i stay at singapore?

or should i go to melb where my two sisters are then go to US?(they are PR, one of them is getting married to australian/pr==>not sure)… i have nobody there
to rely in US in fact…

I don’t have any CCA Achievements at all! My previous country doesn’t focus too much
at CCA or volunteer service… during my sec school how can I participate in local community service and volunteer work as an intl. student? i have no idea about it…

my aim is at Cornell Uni (CALS), NYU, UCal Berkeley, UTexas austin…

hi evereybody…
seems everybody is busy today

yeah i kena’d the upenn ed rejection also haha. but nothing shocking, it’s a reach after all, even if i felt a little ****ty afterwards

@eloriel whoa okay thanks for clearing that up! i sent in my app already but the whole keying-in-grades thing got me sorta worried haha. it’s just that i had one U for math and didn’t want that appearing lol

@chinnemesier:
Dont worry, tons of my friends fall at Upenn.
Good luck in the future with the rest of your school
Waiting on 15/12 for my decision.

HI chinnemeiser…
i am new her and don’t have experiences but my advice is don’t be that sad or deppresed…
I am myself also down here and have no mood but I have to face the future…
Good luck to your future… I pray for the best for you…

HI Tahungah…
it seems you are very experienced… can you give advice to me please (please look a my posts
I’m wating but no one has replied:(:frowning:
Should I only cry and cry?

lol thanks guys… i’m okay. hahah. @yorknell but honestly, at this point, just focus on getting the most out of your secondary school. i mean, it’s too early to think about this stuff seriously, just make sure you do well in school and grab any opportunities. take things in bite-sized chunks.

during my sec school should I participate in local community service and volunteer work? How can I do that as an intl. student? i have no idea about it…
what should i do instead of put the best on any courses? what kind of competition should I take in (dealing with math&science in sec 3)

hi everybody…
all people are welcomed…
can you share some experiences and your interests from 0 to success/ your current condition?
hehehe it might help everybody, especially me:)

For SAT writing, is it necessary to present both sides of the argument? Like in English lessons I was always taught to present both sides then take a stand, does that apply to SAT writing? Thanks :)

Not necessarily. It might even be better to take a stand and stick to it. Anyway, length is what matters most in the SAT essay so make sure you fill up the entire 2 pages.

does anyone know the number of Singaporeans applying to Wharton each year? and Dartmouth so as to speak? it appears that not many Singaporeans head to those 2 schools on a yearly basis

Can anyone help me with some financial questions? those who have been through it before…

 1. How are we supposed to do the declaration of finances where you have to get a bank official to sign? Bates for some reason requires this now and I’m applying for aid.
 2. Are retirement savings apart from cpf considered for efc?

Hey I wanna know how are imperial graduates regarded over there in the US? I’m interested in doing my phD in the US after a 4-year’s master course in imperial.

Hi fellow singaporeans, just sent in my application to NYU Stern. Because I’m currently serving NS, I would like to know the process for applying for deferment (should I get accepted) to start classes in Fall 2012. Thanks for your help, and wishing you all a merry christmas :)
