'Cos it may bring about some perks and extra time is one of them. Once a guy starts wearing green, time becomes very scarce so the additional time can be spent doing something useful. In my case, mug. But then again my subsequent schedule until ORD is pretty low key and I will almost have the whole day for myself (almost every single working day in a week). Hence staying in with the lack of distraction (laptop/phone) may prove beneficial. Therefore I dont see the need to down-pes.

@g3rcyz
xenobyll is right, down pes-ing almost guarantees you will at least have some free time. of course there are plenty of “combat” vocations that give you plenty of free time(“combat” medics at a medical centre comes to mind) but chances of getting such vocations are much less than if you were to be a “non-combatant”. or then again you could swap from wearing green to blue.

edit: just to note even a down pes doesn’t guarantee your days are chock full of free time.
edit2: @xenobyll what’s your vocation?

edit3
does anyone know if taking the SATs in october be in time for ED deadlines?

hey guys, just wana hear some opinion on how wise is it to reject NUS double degree and scholarship for UC Berkeley engineering at a much higher price…i can afford Berkeley, but as you know its still very expensive. I intend to major in EECS. Thanks in advance.

Berkeley’s EECS is top 5 in the world. I can name at least 5 Singaporeans out of the 30+ I know here that have worked at Google during the summer, and many others who have worked at Microsoft, Intel, Yahoo etc. Some even get offered full-time jobs. And yes, they are EECS majors.

If you can afford it, why give up this chance? I strongly urge you to come to Berkeley. The job market for EECS majors in Singapore is very small (IMHO, no generalisation here) as compared to Bio/Mech/Civil Es. If EECS is your interest, it should be no contest (:

thanks for your inputs, i am currently looking at a stay out vocation for my national service and am wondering what i should be doing during the free-d up time should i get what i hope for

@dad1983

Haha thanks for all your advice. I got rejected from NYU already. The nice lady at the admissions office told me I could take the GED to qualify, but it’d be too late for this round of admissions. So I’m at peace, and debating between two other schools! UCLA or UT-Austin. And don’t worry, I don’t intend to ask my parents to fund my MBA. If anything, I intend to work and gain experience in the industry before pursuing my MBA. Thank you for your advice! :)

bafaa221: If you have no problem with finances, Berkeley definitely owns NUS. But if it’s very hard on your family financially, you might have to stick with NUS.

xenobyll: well, if you have a slack combat vocation, then no point downgrading. make the most out of your free time in NS!

:( envious of bafaa. i wanna go to berkeley, but no chance.

anyway congrats bafaa221.

and g3rcyz too. stay out is possibly the best thing that could happen in your NS life.

@ bafa221:

For Cal:
USD$73,045 a year starting pay
https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/EECS.stm

Do the math and make your choice. You’ll have to absorb the $200,000 from 4 years of study first though.

For NUS:
NUS offers bond-free scholarships. If you get accepted into Global Engineering Program it’s a free ride on an accelerated 3 year program, if i’m not wrong.

Signals 10char

my parents r actually eager to send me to berkeley, but i feel guilty abt using so much of their hard-earned savings. i guess i will just pay them back with large amount of interest after i graduated:)

@trivolve thanks for the info. that starting salary figure really made me make up my mind

thank you guys

@dad1983
Thanks for your response!

Another question popped up in my mind. Once I finish ug, I am planning to do grad school in the US, but just in case it doesn’t work out, what is NUS’s view on enrolling students from LACs in their Masters programs?

Also, I’d planned to accept the offer from NUS School of Computing as a backup in case things don’t go as planned with the visa. But, of course, if everything goes well, I’ll be schooling at MHC. So if I’ve accepted the offer from NUS can I backtrack from it and not turn up (after informing them, of course)? Or would that put a blackmark next to my name for any future applications (Masters etc)?

Hey guys. I need some advice regarding the next step to take for Univ admissions to the US and UK. But before that, here’s a bit of info:

GCE O Levels 2007- 3A2s, 3B3s

GCE A levels 2010- AAD (GP, PW , Econs H1s) DDE (Math, Physics, Chemistry H2s)

SAT I- 2110 (planning to retake)

SAT II will take accordingly depending on next course of action.

I am planning to enroll at Bellerbys College, UK which offers foundation courses to UK univ such as Bristol, City etc and A level 3 term courses ( i.e. if i choose to retake in UK I’ll sit for the June 2012 A levels and start applying for US/UK admissions from September 2012).

I am seriously considering re-taking my A’s in UK and am confident of securing at least AAAA (let’s assume for now so that the debate does not revolve around potential and ability).

Would re-taking my A’s discriminate my application/standing for admissions especially so for Ivy league Universities, Ox-bridge and LSE, UK?

Also, would it be a good idea to submit my JC SGC (I was the Debate Captain, Student Editor, Class chairman among various other achievements/roles) albeit without my A level cert?

Or should I not submit anything from JC at all? Because I have other achievements (involved in non-profit debate organization, international level debater; represented my organization at university-level overseas competition, co-organized national level tournament, adjudicated in international debate competition etc.) which could also show my passion/talent etc without my having to disclose the abysmal A level results on my first try.

Also, do you know of anyone or have experience in such matters especially regarding re-taking/repeat students who later go on to enter prestigious universities?

(Btw NS is not a factor).

Side question:
Also applied to local through discretionary but little hope there. If I do get in, what are my chances of transferring to US (assuming >3.7 GPA)? US does not accept course credits unless applicant is from SMU right?

Hope you guys can offer some helpful suggestions and comments. Thanks for reading this abnormally long post. Cheers.

just wondering, whats the average sat score and a level score for a student in NYU- stern , cornell AEM , northwestern georgetown and berkeley? cause from what im hearing its all around 2300 and its really quite depressing. Plus how much do cca’s and sat 2’s matter?

@xeno which signal unit you from ? SLEEP THRU SKILL:) opps

@0123 from what i heard purdue accepts O level school and your SATS are decent enought to be considered. but this year intake is finished for int for most school . Perhaps 2012 intake

UK wise your result maybe enough to secure places in extra and clearing . Especially with good ole money as you will be paying Int student fees.

Try lesser known russel league school. since its now extra @ucas , you do know which school has extra places.

@ben SATS scorewise do check out collegeboard they are quite comprehensive , from what i know these school require AAA, good essay and decent EC. Afterall singaporean are quite overrepresented in good schools.

I had friend who entered NYU but fail to admit to UNC , so there is no hard rules for these school i would say. But i would say Cornell and Berkeley(known to be hard for oos nt to sure abt int) is the hardest , followed by NYU and northwestern then Georgetown.

Of course i may be wrong
Good luck

Am a grad student going to Columbia this fall… am really nervous over the visa application! Hopefully my application wouldn’t get rejected, and I heard it can take months sigh.

BTW, congratulations to everyone with an offer, and to prospective students/applications…all the best!

Warmest,
S

and if i take AP exams , will that make any difference to my portfolio? or does A levels replace the AP exam?

This I’m not to sure but If I rmb what I read some uni considered a lvl as ap for certain sub. Have to email your university to confirm.

Ap are advance placement which are test u take for credit and exemption
