Singaporean connection

hello people! i’m applying this year and was wondering if there are any Singaporeans around here who are studying at/have applied to the schools i’m applying to.

they are:
University of Chicago
Middlebury
Bowdoin
Carleton

any other feedback would be greatly appreciated too! :D

hey everyone, if im applying to one of the UC campuses, do i have to fulfill the a-g requirements? Plus if i took my SATS in army, does it count? Cause apparently it says on the application form is that it does not accept any scores that are sent after you graduate ):

@ben267
i think our secondary school education pretty much covers a-f, don’t know about g… i’m still applying though. and the second question: where does it say that O_O

The A-G part that you guys are referring to is done by the school counselor, So do not worry about it.

Also, taking the SATs in army counts! I think ben267 saw the words wrongly. They do not accept the SAT scores after you MATRICULATE. That means, that once you are given an admission decision, you don’t send in scores. In simpler terms, just do the SATs and send them the scores with your application.

ah he had me worried for awhile there. thanks for clearing that up!

does anyone know how much you can exceed the word count by? for one of my essay’s the prompt said approx 250 words. but i have close to 350 :frowning: i really don’t know what to cut!

@nadash: Thanks so much! omg i haven’t been coming much to this website coz there is so much school work! who’s taking the Nov SAT this saturday with moi? o.O :)

Oh, hey! I didn’t know there was a s’pore page! I used to live there for a little bit, now I’m livin in the US. If any of you have questions, I’ll try to help out.

One suggestion; learn how to not write in Singlish. Some of you guys like chop word from essay. This not good sound, lah?

Dude, that’s not even Singlish

Well, obviously not. I’m just trying to say that not everyone is good at masking it.

Extra-Curriculars:
In JC I took Bowling, Entrepreneurship Club & a Cultural Society. I was a member of all 3 CCAs. I competed in the Inter-School Bowling tournaments and friendlys representing my school (CJ). I participated in a number of entrepreneurship competitions and was involved in public performances for my cultural CCA. Also, I was awarded the NYAA (Gold) in 2009. Volunteered in Batam, Indonesia and took up a volunteering opportunity in the rural parts of India during my school holidays in 2006,2007 and 2008. Apart from that, in NS, I was awarded the Service Excellence Award for the contributions I made to my department. I’m a very motivated and disciplined student and this was reflected in my essays.

Once again, Please chance me guys! Thanks.

sigh. between NS and my application i totally forgot to mail in my transcripts.

does anyone know if scanning a copy of my certificates and emailing them in would be acceptable? gonna try that tonight :D

@avatarducks
i think you have a half-decent chance. same as me lol.
p.s i was from cj too :D

i posted this on brightsparks too:
as i was looking at the state of my applications, i started wondering what i would do if i only got into colleges that weren’t what i hoped for. i.e good ranking etc

i was wondering, would going to the US and spending all that money to study in a halfway-decent college be better for me than taking up a place in NTU or NUS?

i’ve always heard about how going overseas to study is not just about the education, its also the college experience and how it will build you as a person. but the total cost will come up to about 300k!(i’m a REALLY stingy person). my mind is still set on going, but when it really comes down to accepting enrollment and paying the deposit i wonder if i would reconsider at that point in time.

p.s i’m studying engineering.

wow ok. I just got accepted into Michigan Ann-Arbor. so much for illinois eh? lol

@avatarducks
congratulations!

Wow congrats avatarducks! Did you apply EA? How did they admit you so fast?! Its just been a week since the deadline. Did you apply for any preferred admission?

… Haha uh crap if I haven’t heard from UMich and I applied EA does that mean I’m in trouble haha ahhh

my application isn’t even considered complete yet T_T only going to mail out my certificates tomorrow.
my hopes are fading :(

@introverted & dinosoar thanks guys! yeah I’m quite surprised I’ve heard from them so soon. actually I applied for the winter term. the deadline for that was 01/10. I contacted them and they told me that it’s actually harder to get in for the winter term as they don’t accept many students. I am still in disbelief actually. and with my grades. but then my essays were excellent and my recommendations great as well. now i’m just keeping my fingers crossed while waiting for my ns disruption papers to get through. that way I can save some time by entering earlier than my peers.

@avatarducks
maybe it helped being one of the only few singaporean males applying for winter term :smiley: and here i had this impression engineering only had a fall intake. guess i got the wrong school. hopefully your disruption gets approved!

and congratulations again!

Hey man, just to check , but apparently UC schools say that the a-g requirements are to be taken during high schools years ( which means JC years right) so in that case, does it mean that those of us who merely take a science combi, will we be able to fulfill the arts requirement? Any help on this will be greatly appreciated!
