i think they do view A-levels as the equivalent of AP for them. high school and our secondary schools are actually “secondary education”.

but to quote their website

Hey, first time posting here. totally didn’t know there’s a Singapore thread on CC!
I’m so slow on this.

Anyway, applying for college this cycle too! Got into UMich EA for Engineering :)

Nice to meet all of ya.

hello theKboy, might see you on campus next year!!!

nice to meet you theKboy! and congratulations on getting accepted!

where is anyone applying!

and is anyone apply LACs?

:D

Hi!
I just joined collegeconfidential and this is my first post…I happened to come across this singaporean thread, would anyone be willing to help answer these few questions i have? :)

-For the common app, when they ask for your class rank, do you really put your rank in your class (which would be much smaller) or do you put your rank within the level/cohort? I thought it should be cohort but I would just like to confirm.
-Also, how will “unrealistic/extreme” marks or grades affect my application when transcripts are sent to the college? I am probably going to apply just with o levels and because of that, my report book might reflect grades that are very low, like failing grades near the o level period, because of high standards and difficult tests etc. The o level grades will probably be much higher.
-Leadership positions: In the american context, i realised that class president counts as an extracurricular which can be put down in the application. however in my school we have one student body president and lots of class presidents. so does being president (or vice president, secretary, treasurer or in any leadership position for that matter) in your class count as an extracurricular that can be put down in the application too?

Thanks in advance!

Hi sunshinegirl, I’ve just submitted my app. Hope to be of help

i) It is your rank in your entire cohort. Bear in mind that you should consult your school on how to fill in your class rank and not fill in whatever you think is right

ii) I am not familiar with applying with O level results, but if it is the same as the A level results, your school will be required to produce your predicted grades. Whether or not your mid-year/final-year/preliminary examination results are required would differ from college to college. Generally, many will ask for mid-year and final-year results to be submitted. We cannot tell how these results will affect your chances as different schools weigh them differently, but generally (again) schools which receive a large number of international applications from Singapore are likely to make an effort to understand our education system and the extent of grade deflation in our schools

iii) Yes

Not much context for us to work with. My advice is to do your research: visit college websites, browse their respective forums on this board or otherwise, speak with students, etc. Best of luck!

i actually typed this out already but it got deleted. so my answers may be a tad shorter :P

yes it would be rank in your level. but personally i didn’t report my class rank since I am presenting O/A level results and there is no official ranking.

it should affect you. but admissions will look at things in context so it would be wise to put in your class rank if you plan on presenting your school results. i read a reddit IamA though that they do give more weight to standardised test since, well, they are standardised which makes it easier to compare student’s abilities. personally i didn’t report my school results and only put in my O and A level results.

yes you actually can put in anything you deem noteworthy. its up to admissions to decide whether it’s worthy or not. just don’t put in too much random crap and annoy them do make sure you get the details right though. but i read another reddit IamA that the admissions officers really do not have the time to verify what you put into your application. but some systems like the university of california system will take a random sample and verify their applications.

good luck with your application! feel free to ask questions :)

Thank you so much introverted and g3rcyz! You all were very helpful.

@sunshine , you may already know , but only a selected “good” US school accept the Os and from my knowledge even know school like michigan says they accept the Os you would most likely be getting straights As to have a shot

P.S i did not remember stating my class rank for the Os

@bouncy: yup i know that. i aim to do as well as i can and then try if it seems like i have a shot. thanks.

How can I have a ************* (self-censored hor) China accent when I’m not from China? You tone-deaf ‘music education’ major who blabs about herself way to much anyway. This obnoxious loudmouth spent a summer in China, but still thinks Sgreans are carbon copies of mainland Chinese. Get it through your skull that some Asians actually speak English as a first language.

Needed to vent. Ok, since this is cc, I must say something informative Fellow Sgreans, US is a beautiful place but when you come here, expect that the locals will treat you like u from China like that. Kinda ironic right, US is that mythical place where individuality is championed (what we dream about where we rote memorise stuff in dreary JC classrooms), but you come here and they already have you pegged. You are first and foremost an Asian (uh, probably from China, they think), before you are Paul(ine) Tan <== example name hor, not mine.

Hi everyone, I’m a J2 student, just got my Chinese ‘A’ Level results a few days ago. I got a D with a pass in oral (SIGH). Should I retake it? Aiming for top universities. My Chinese isn’t that bad actually, I got A2 for ‘O’ Levels.
I got 2300 for my SAT I… Does that remedy the situation in any way? :\ Haven’t taken Subject Tests yet. And of course I plan to get much much better grades for the rest of my subjects…
Please advise, your input would be greatly appreciated!
