To preciouspurple - promote a narrow range of colleges? Yes, definitely. It’s true.

Collegeconfidential overall promotes the top schools only, I mean, look at the What Are My Chances forum. A 2000 SAT is mediocre over there.

And this forum is all about US colleges anyway - student room UK is for UK universities. Not many American students go overseas for college, so it’s not surprising that the entirety of the forum lacks information on non-US colleges.

About this thread and its focus on top colleges - I can’t justify going overseas to a non-top university and shelling out big bucks, when a bargain can be found at NUS. Preciouspurple, I don’t know your family situation (what’s your idea of affordable??), but I’m only applying to four top colleges because, well, I wouldn’t pay 60k a year for Purdue when I can pay like 10k (maximum, then minus scholarships) for NUS.

"National University officials would like to found the college sometime in 2013, though the presidents of the Claremont Colleges see that date as optimistic. "… 2013??

from that article, it sounds like this new LAC in singapore is going to be a rather respectable one… which must be good news i guess  (personally i don’t see the point of getting curtin or nsw to set up shop here)

that’s perhaps because you approach tertiary education from a rather myopic and elitist view, seeing it only as a resource to be consumed by the very best and brightest of society?

How can i see the profiles of Singaporeans on CC?

That’s deliberately antagonistic. Good quality of education =/= Best and brightest students. I don’t see what’s wrong with David stating that the quality of education at NSW or Curtin is not as good as that at the Claremont colleges.

And everyone, let’s congratulate screw for getting his screwy letter published in Sunday Times today. Whoopee…

hi fiona, are there any non-math/sci competitions i can join in Singapore. My school does not have much opportunities for me but im trying to search for them on my own… Any competitions u know of?

^ Lots of essay writing competitions around (Stanford Book Prize, MAS-ESS, etc…), GIC NEFMQ is a good one if you are interested in economics and finance.

sef-: isn’t tertiary education supposed to be consumed by those who can undertake the academic and intellectual rigour involved?

fiona_: LOL you just revealed my identity! i know you just finished your prom la now so sotong

anyway care to share scewy’s letter? :P

Thanks ppl… Arghh people underneath my block singing “rasa sayang eh” and “hotel california” lol…

hehe too bad lor ><

ahem

Hm. Anyone know if the mobile phones we buy in Singapore will be functional in USA?

Nadash: It does, at least it does in the west coast. Using a T-mobile pay-as-you-go SIM card now on a Samsung mobile bought in Singapore.

Which universities are you guys heading to?

limnieng - UCLA
screwy - Princeton
visceral_verve - Harvard
galoisien - UVa
frankchn - Stanford
Nadash - Amherst

Hmm I can’t think of any others, 1234d thisbetterworks, atomcrusader, darklord and I are all J2. Kashiva is J3, oceanwave is J4, Edwinsque I dunno, but applying this year. I don’t know about preciouspurple.

Well, both MIT and UChicago are good in Econ. But Ppl associate UChicago with Economics and MIT with Engineering. So, UChicago economics program is more well known in USA.

Btw, undergraduate econ program isn’t that quantitative. You only have to take calc 1 and 2…well, at least that’s the requirement in my school. However, if you wanna go to a grad school, then it will get more quantitative…hence you will have to take extra math classes in ur undergrad colleges if you know that you wanna go to a grad school in econ.

fiona_ are u in US now? if not, are you coming to US soon?

Valour/fiona: I was here since last year.

No, I’m J2. Applying to college this year.

Wow, you sure know a lot about US colleges…impressive! haha
