^ If you are dead-set on a US university, then I suspect it might be better to go to a community college then attempt to transfer instead of going to MI.

“Thinking about uni” is very different from actually preparing for uni. Your expectations and list of schools will be more realistic when you have some basic stats like SAT, promo/prelim grades. I thought of going overseas ever since i was like what 10? But until the summer of my JC2 year i still didn’t have a college list.
“Top 5 JC”, NJ? haha whenever people say that i have the feeling their school is either ranked 4th or 5th.
IP has changed a lot ever since I finished its first two years. Back in my days it was a lot of project-based learning, a lot of fluffy stuff. Not even remotely related to A level. Those were the good old days We had a lot of fun in our IP years and we all juggled A levels fine. Don’t worry too much lah. It’s the worrying that kills you (and your complexion lol).

Drifter said “top 5 school”, and that his/her school requires students to take HSK.

Which leaves only one option…

… oh crap, I think drifter knows who the conditional A*STAR scholar I’m talking about is…

Location: Bestway building (near tanjong pagar MRT) the building used to be the Old Singapore Poly .

Ok so yesterday , I payed them visit. Grace, who is in charge of marketing , was my guide. Very professional , we sat in an interview room and I asked her all the questions I wanted. The building is quite old, half of it is currently being used by mediacorp as headquarters for some of its channels (such as OKTO and Suria)
But the interior its quite pleasant.
A 30 second walk out of the building (still on the compound) brings you to a food court with around 7 stores, the usual local food court fare. They also have a Botak jones western styled “cafe” with alcohol and live band.

The school has a decently sized Library , a computer lab, around 12 classrooms and a few extra rooms. They took half of this section of the building and occupy two floors. The first floor is where the library resides, along with the staff room and interview rooms. The USEIC shares part of this first floor.

The second floor is home to the classrooms, and the computer lab. The classrooms are decent and air-conditioned. They are all connected by a single large hallway which has the usual display boards/ notices which line the large but empty hallway.
Its not the most cozy or fantastic place, but it is decent, clean and practical. (at least in some ways better than my secondary sch)
Computer lab has 30 odd computers, all in good condition. Library is also well stocked and organized. It had more books than my secondary school!

Cohort size/nationality: the total amount of student as any one time is around 120 . Made up of mostly Singaporeans and Indonesians. A smaller percentage of China students, and a few more sprinklings of asian students. Then there is also a percentage of American and Canadian students. I met some students who told me they were enjoying the school.
I watched a class from the outside( they didnt know i was there), and no-one was sleeping LOL … they appeared to be paying attention … Students are around 17 to 19 years of age. Most classes,i was told, are relatively small , at least compared to local standards, around 13 students a class.

Transferring : According to Grace, the transfer rate is about 98% . She says most students who try to transfer usually do, unless they did badly or didnt meet requirements.
They showed me a list of universities their student transfered to… and the list was pretty impressive it included: NYU,Havard, UCLA,UC Berkley, Boston U, columbia U… and others
They also however, have a LINK with University of south florida … that means that they have agreed to accept you and that all your credits will transfer, and that it will be relatively easier to transfer to university of south florida. She also showed me a list of students who had just transfered this winter, pretty impressive too.

Teachers: Minimum qualification is a master degree. However the majority of them have a PhD. Most of them are foreigners, and have studied in the US college system.

Classes: A good verity of classes to choose from . They even have french, philosophy , literature and many more interesting subjects. Each student will only have lessons 2 days a week. ( if i understood her correctly. ) You go to school according to your schedule. Usually it starts at 8 or later and ends at 3 or depending again on which lessons you take, there are even night classes for part time students.

Overall: It seems pretty decent. Interesting mix of students. Almost everyone there will pursue higher education in the US. No uniforms… good or bad… you decide lol. I dont think there is much “school spirit” but I was told by the students they often have overseas camps/trips. The school building itself COULD be nicer… but its better than average. I’ve seen better and worse. They are registered with the MOE, and are assured by CASE.The college has been around since 1986 in Singapore. looks like a good choice if you are SURE you want to pursue US higher education.

THEIR WEBSITE:

[American College](http://www.americancollege.edu.sg/)

hope this could help someone. Go ahead and call them up and visit them. Its a good alternative.

hey…you beginning JC 1 this year? i havent really heard of the school before so i guess its like a really small school?

its a private school and yes pretty small.

Well technically I cant go to JC lol I failed my freaking maths!!!

SO im considering going to broward community college

i see…can’t you like maybe try and enroll in some school like maybe SAS, then retake maths again as a private candidate this year?

what is this SAS you are referring to?

If you are talking about the american school…you are aware that Singaporeans are not eligible to apply right?

ok CRAZY ! CRAZY CRAZY! is what I can use to describe what my mum and I are going to do tmr.

My mum wants to TRY and get me accepted into a JC… TRY

I have L1R4 of 18 … maths failed.

But we are going to TRY LOL, no harm in trying right. I think my chances are close to nothing… But TRY we will…
WOW.

Yeah my mum’s WISE idea… mmm oh well wish me luck.

Has this ever been done before? has this been successful?

Anyways, obviously we are going to try at the lowest ranking JCs… LOL wow… CRAZY!!!

oh well…good luck then!! but i think that results are not exactly that important in JC? at least thats what my senior told me, he said its more of a attitude to learn that matters…i think you need to really display a urge to learn and at the same time tell the biggest **** and bull story of your life…say you fell sick on the day? not asking you to lie though :)

cool…didnt know that they would censor c o c k…and bull story…always thought it was like maybe a proper word, guess i’ve watched too much hollywood shows then…

LOL! right but LOL knowing my mum,she has the GUTS to try anything, sometimes crazy things, but you’ll never know.

!!! LOL i still think its a long shot though! mental !

i swear, even if I get accepted or not, i think its a Newpaper tabloid worthy story!
LOL. I really will send this story in. ( lol i just have to go a few floors above my office to the newpaper newsroom…)

to confused_vness: lol im glad im still free from acne, at least for now haha. and im in sec 4

to phantompong: HMMM… i shall ask around haha. anyway that person shuld be at least two batches above me. as well connected as one can be, i doubt many manage to reach tt far haha! so dun worry so much haha and darn i know u’re not doing this on purpose but dun mention the phrase u mentioned in both posts lol. im blushing too much lol. :D

lol…we are discussing about acne how?? haha…but you can try and perhaps show that you fared alright for prelims (that is of course provided that you did okay), cause i heard that some schools will take into account that things can crop up during examinations?

prelims? tt’s still a long way haha. may i know the average SAT score for a student in singapore who fared straight As in a level? cause i want to know the standard of SAT haha thanks

its a lower standard than A levels.

But DO NOT under-estimate it. ITs very different from local tests. The format may mess you up, PRACTISE it!!!

@drifter: Haha come back in JC2 and if i’m still here we’ll take about pimples lol maybe it’s just my school culture but the stress level affects even the girls with the best complexion. Well that, and Singapore’s weather and stupid PE.

drifter: Confirm know one. I hear he’s a legend, lol

Huh what phrase… oh. Lol.

gah I read someone’s response to bigcheese thread about internationals finding jobs after graduation in the U.S. According to that poster, it is hard to get a job in the US as your employer have to make sure that he can’t get an American to fill that post So it will probably be back Singapore if that is the case… If that is so, I’m screwed because the schools I applied to are all LACs that no one here has heard before.

Just wanted to know if this is true according to your experience (if you graduated already) and what you feel about this (if you are still waiting for entry).
