Singaporean connection

Crapola, I’m waiting on USC, and when A Level results get released I’m going to apply to NUS and NTU too, Just In Case. I hate waiting.

^ Zol
Yeah, I know its the same everywhere. But since I am not in JC, meaning I am just doing on my own, I have to contact the organisation on my own. Collegeboard’s reply for venues for AP exams in Singapore this year is only Fig and SAS. No idea why.

um just a quick qn. how important are ECs in the process for us singaporeans? as compared to grades? do we need to have crazy ECs to be accepted into HYP?

^ Since HYP receives applications with almost all stellar grades, to stand out, yes, you must have excellent ECs which really shows your character.

Yea I second that. Good grades are what get you considered in the first place, and only when you meet that requirement do they start comparing others factors like ECs and teachers’ recommendations.

^ ECs are very important. Almost everyone who has a serious shot at HYPM have/will get straight-As at A-levels or 40-odd points in IB anyway. The ECs (along with your essays, recs and all) differentiate you from the rest of the pack.

ahh…thats wonderfully reassuring…omg, can anyone tell me how difficult it is to get like roughly 40 and above for the IB? if im correct, and there is no government mess up (a more polite term for what i have in mind:)), i think i will be attending a UWC come this august…

Ah crud. I got a letter from USC saying they want my O Level results (not a problem) and proof of ability to pay one year (US$50,000 - problem). Was banking on not having to send that for a while more (at least until scholarship season) but now… cue $$ discussion with parents :(

ACS(I) has loads of students getting <40 every year. I think there are just too few school offering the IB at the moment so the standards of students and level of competition aren’t all that high yet, which makes it easier to score in.

phantompong, I had to submit that too, though i did that last year so its all good for me now! I just wish they’d give me the International Freshman Academic Scholarship, the Deans they offered isn’t quite enough! In that case, I may have to go to the UK instead cause that’s alot cheaper.

I think about half of the world’s IB top scorers (meaning 45 points), come from ACSI.

That’s about a dozen people (am I right? Not so sure on this score).

Think about how many make it into HYPSM combined from Singapore? Not more than 30, I think, with maybe 10 into S.

You’ve got maybe 50 straight As for A level students each from Hwach and RJC. Cut it into half for maybe prelims straight As + those going to UK, since Prelims’ slightly harder and UK’s pretty hot too. That’s approximately 80 people vying for 30 places. Not counting other potential candidates from NJC, TJC, VJC, etc etc etc.

So… I’m assuming its’ in this order. Grades –> SATs –> ECs –> Recs/Essay. At the 3rd stage, assuming you’re still there, means stellar grades and SATs, and really awesome ECs, you’ve probably got a decent chance at HYPSM.

Those more knowledgeable (and older, heh), comments?

150 straight 7As from HC alone (+50 straight 8As and 3 straight 9As), and a similar number from RJ, I believe. And people get into HYPSM at least without straight As (I did and my senior did). I think so long as you get 6As or above - you are basically academically qualified.

Grades are important, but grades alone is not enough.

how about O level grades? i mean,if you didnt exactly achieve stellar grades for the examinations because you were still young, and did not fully appreciate the gravty of the situation, would you be blacklisted when you apply for like the Ivies? Even though you might have achieved an upward trend in the results in 11th and 12th grade?

Unfortunately O-level grades (or the equvialent IP exam) would be quite important. It is probably the only set of solid results from an exam you want the US university to know. I know I won’t want to show them my promos or prelim grades, for example.

oh dear…in other words, im rather screwed i guess…but like if you took the O level, but went overseas to continue your education? such that you would be handing in predicted grades for the 12th grade examinations? would you still be blacklisted if you have contradictory grades? good/decent enough grades to be considered for admisson, yet not so stellar O’s?

^ I think they might overlook it if you have good predicted grades and your school is historically accurate in predicting actual grades (no cases where a straight-A prediction turned out to be straight-B or straight-C actual exam results), and of course excellent CCA and other things on your applications. No guarantees though - especially for international students… it is gonna be quite tough.

did anyone of you have problems sending your “secondary school report” to stanford? thanks!

^ They lost mine last year so I had to sent it over again via Fedex.

they lost mine as well… so i send another one by speedpost which they lost as well. now they want me to fax those things over. damn

Whoo, Singaporeans! I’m studying in high school in California, and I applied to college for the fall of 2009. Getting the rest of my admissions decisions next month D: Good luck everyone!

Whats the average sec 4 IP GPA for those(older folks’ or their friends)? I know its all dependent to lots of stuff as well. But just want a range kind of thing.
