so which dining halls do we use?

Trying to clarify what information I’ve picked up. There are many dining halls, but many have restricted hours, and some are restricted to special classes of students like Echols or athletes, right? In general, are most students just restricted to O’Hill and Newcomb, if they don’t want to use plus dollars or anything?

What about Runk?

If you don’t want to use plus dollars I’m pretty sure you can only go to O’Hill, Newcomb, and Runk. If you want to use plus dollars you can go to: The Pav (1st floor Newcomb), Crossroads (at OHill), C3 stores, the little Cafes (like West Range Cafe), the bookstore coffee-type stores…etc…

With Newcomb being the biggest.

Newcomb and OHill are the two biggest/busiest dining facilities on grounds. Newcomb being the closest to central grounds and therefore crazy busy during peak lunch hours. OHill is closest to New Dorms and most of Old Dorms and therefore the popular place for the majority of the first year class. Runk is by Hereford/Stadium residences and the spot frequented by people living in those residences as well as some Alderman Road (New) Dorms. Athletes often take advantage of their dining facility at JPJ. These are all meal swipe locations.

Aside from that you can use Plus $/Cash/Cav Advantage/Plastic at many other locations including Crossroads(at OHill) and The Castle(under Bonnycastle dorm) both popular places for first years after normal dining hours. Furthermore the Pav at Newcomb is a popular lunch stop for upperclassman or meeting up with people, as is the West Range Cafe just up from the Amphitheater on the Range.

Galoisien, where are you living? I might be able to give you a better idea of the places you’ll be hitting up most frequently, but in general OHill, Crossroads, Newcomb, The Castle.

I’m living at the IRC (Gwathmey specifically). Does Runk serve better cuisine? Newcomb is actually pretty fantastic at the moment, but I’ve been advised by rumour that it will wear off. Is it worth walking down to Runk (or heck, O’hill) for change and variety?

Newcomb is by far the closest to you. It’s not too bad a walk to O’Hill, so if you feel the desire for something different/better, it’s not too much out of the way.

yeah newcomb is going to be your main dining hall most likely. ohill and certainly runk are just too out of the way. if you had a couple friends and some time to kill and felt adventurous then by all means check em out, they just won’t be as convenient.

uhh, i love o’hill/old dorms. They’re so convenient. And o’hill food rocks. newcomb=suck. i went there today (newcomb) and all i brought back was cereal and a bagel. the rest sucked.

But db123, you’re a first-year! How did you get sick of Newcomb so fast already?

I mean, there’s fun mixing and matching still to be done … like free flow of ice cream floats (yeah the ice cream itself does need to be improved) and iced cappucino, and adding fruit juice to your waffle mix. :D

Newcomb is just plain bad. The 3 min walk to O’Hill compared to the 20 min walk to Newcomb may sway my perceptions slightly, but even on central grounds I’d walk back up to O’Hill. Better food, and variety.

Although, they really need to improve their coffee. It’s a pain to walk all the way to Starbucks everyday.

yeah, no. it takes me 5 minutes to get to O’Hill and 10-15 to Newcomb. And since O’Hill is better, there’s no need to walk to Newcomb. I only went yesterday to get some take out and nothing was appetizing. I’m not making that mistake again. And I could also go to the Castle which is on my way back but that uses plus dollars. :frowning: i already used like $10 lol and it hasn’t even been a week.

and canuck, where is the nearest starbucks? i’ve been dying for some good coffee. I tried some at the bookstore and BLEH it tasted like pure unadulterated sugar. Not that I don’t like that taste, it’s just I prefer a coffee taste when I order coffee.

On the corner beside Bodos and Bank of America. The coffee here is really bad!

well it takes me 30 seconds to get to newcomb and 10 minutes to get to Ohill. Not to mention the whole no waiting in line at newcomb thing… but the food is bad. Its definitely worth it to make the trek up to OHill. Its kind of annoying because I would have t like collect friends and get them all to come with me, whereas with newcomb everyone I know is in the Brown room and there almost always SOMEONE there.

D’oh, since when did Echols scholars have their own dining hall? I’ve been missing out on this… haha. But I don’t think we have our own special plan or something.

db123 don’t worry about plus dollars, you’ll realize you have more than you can spend at the end of the semester. Plus, as a first year don’t you get $400 plus dollars or so?

no we get like $250 lol. and I’m not worried about using plus dollars because I could always refill them or use cash/cavadvantage/credit card/debit card. I’m just trying to make sure I get my 15 meals per week.

p.s. how bad is it that everytime i go to the bookstore, I walk out with clothing?

Bad; very bad.

And expensive.

Where in the world are you going to put all those duds? Given the extensive (and of course very fashionable) wardrobe you posted earlier, I don’t know where you’re going to find space for all your clothes (not to mention the requisite accessories) in an Old Dorms room.

And we haven’t even talked about the shoes… ;)

haha I can justify my purchase(s) because 1. I had coupons!! haha and 2. I bought a shirt for my dad. it was like the top ten reasons why my child goes to UVa and I think almost all of them applied to my parents. So technically, it’s not for me…

although I bought another t-shirt for me. but there’s 20 places I could put that.

and HHD, it’s nice to see that you’re paying attention to my posts. ;)

If you have any unisex clothes, sell some of them to me. :stuck_out_tongue: But that’s unlikely though. If I want to do laundry on a biweekly cycle, I need a few more pairs of pants. And I should have brought more underwear. I wonder if it’s worth the long-term investment to buy more clothes just so I can pack as much clothes as I can on each laundry cycle to maximise my $1.50??

And yeah, I might switch to the Plus-10 or something next semester … I realise that the IRC provides tons of free food on weekends, which I can supplement with ramen and kitchen stuff, while I basically need only 2 meals from the dining halls a day on weekdays, being the buffets they are and how I inevitably stuff myself each time.

haha galoisien, unless you’re a size small, I don’t think my clothes will fit you.

UHH I LOVE GAME DAY. I was in O’Hill and the marching band came in to eat. And 5 minutes later, O’Hill broke out into song. love.
