Never heard of the host and haven’t seen any of the movies. I’ll be channel surfing!

razorsharp,

The average NFL game contains only 12 minutes of actual plays. The rest of the time includes commercials, replays, disecting, trisecting, and quadruplesecting plays, plus multiple shots of gorgeous cheerleaders.

Does anyone know what time it airs on the east coast? I think it’s at 8?

IMDB says the broadcast starts at 8 PM EST (on ABC), with the official ceremony beginning at 8:30.

One of the commercials has Seth Macfarlane saying something like “Hi, I’m Seth Macfarlane (ask your kids), and on February 24th I’m hosting the Oscars (ask your parents).” So the powers that be seem aware that he’s not someone every Oscar-watcher is familiar with.

He does have a very good singing voice, and I hope the numbers in the show will be good ones. I read an interview with him today in which he says they’re going to try to keep it classy, and cites Johnny Carson as an example of a classy host. (And he was!) So maybe he’ll be okay. I agree that Ellen was a great host some years ago - wish they’d bring her back.

One kid working the Oscars. The others have people nominated. One of our good friends has a father who is nominated.

We have ordered our Chinese food, filled out of “ballots” (the person who gets the most correct gets a “gift”.)

As for the host: Seth first big hit is the show Family Guy. He may play this one very close to the edge.

Ellebud

What fun, bevhills. I’m an LA person as well, so we’ll be watching. Lucky for us, we don’t have to stay up until 11pm!
I do have my Dd here this time, so the three of us will make dinner and enjoy the show. I’m pulling for Argo for Best Picture and for Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper to win Best Actors. There were some good films this year, for a change.

The only nominated film I’ve seen so far is Argo, but I really, really do not think it ought to win, based on what I’ve heard about Lincoln and several other nominees. I mean, yes, it was very entertaining, but still.

I believe that we have seen all or most of the nominated films. REALLY like Argo…Lincoln was blessed with an outstanding acting ensemble…but a little slow, Hitchcock…not a favorite…Playbook…my daughter swears that I saw it with her but I slept through it…Jennifer Lawrence was great…on the second viewing.

Big Oscar watcher here. DD is coming home as we love the red carpet and the dresses and dissecting the fashion. Youger D cannot come home, as she has a 3 PM performance in off-Bway show. Then tomorrow night, Fashion Police with Joan, Guiliana and co… for best dressed and worst dressed nominee without question. Sometimes or actually usually the show itself gets kind of draggy but these year I have seen most of the movies except for Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, Amour and Django. My pics are Argo for Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln for best actor, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook although Emannuele Riva is also a strong contender-have to catch up with this movie, Anne Hathaway for Les Mis, and either Robert De Niro or Tommy Lee Jones for best supporting actor, Ang Lee for Life of Pi for best director but I thought that Lincoln was masterful and so Steven Spielberg obviously a strong contender.

Moonchild…it is almost an obligation to watch and debate and cheer for us Angelenos. Zero Dark Thirty…saw it and really liked it. Les Miz was ok. We haven’t seen Amour yet.

No. Not watching. Not interested.

Kind of think Hollywood, the movie industry, the whole thing is really jaded and irrelevant and stupid.

Liked Lincoln. Thought Zero was extraordinary. Argo was pleasant and not much else. Les Mis seemed kind of unnecessary? And I really can’t stand thought policing and when the government and Hollywood collude to tell us what to think is really, really depressing – and maybe even scary.

Now any of us with enterprising young history scholars will be telling them – start preparing your book about the McCarthy era of the second decade of the 21st century. It will take some time but gel for them right about when they’re up for tenure.

If I hadn’t seen Amour I don’t know who I would have gone with for best actress. Although I didn’t see The Impossible.

I thought that Emanuelle Riva was exquisite. I like Silver Lining Playbook and thought that Jennifer Lawrence did a good job but you just can’t put her in the category with Emanuelle Riva. I also felt that some of the scenes in Playbook were awkwardly contrived. Not Jennifer Lawrence’s fault but hard to ignore anyway, IMO.

Nope, not watching this politically driven show; stopped watching after Saving Private Ryan was snubbed for best picture in favor for Shakespeare in Love. I’m not in favor of judging different roles and films as the truly best ones annually are great in their own regard, but I suppose it is necessary to have such an award.

I really think the important Cinema is going on in TV series this era, not in movies.

Mr. Ellebud is very emotionally constipated. He doesn’t cry. The Impossible made him cry.

Yeah, there are a lot of good movies this year.

^ Oh come on. You didn’t hear? You can’t like “The Impossible” – our thought police are very clear on that.

[Pick of the week: Beautiful white people hit by tsunami! - Salon.com](http://www.salon.com/2013/01/04/pick_of_the_week_beautiful_white_people_hit_by_tsunami/)

Really, can’t we have a break from references to the thought police on this thread? We Americans have a long tradition of loving the movies. We invented the whole wonderful, silly Oscar thing. It’s Oscar night. Some of us would like to enjoy that.

YES please. I don’t care that you’re above the whole commercialized and idolized thing about tonight. I’m not that enlightened yet so just stop.

I was on the edge of my seat through the movie, even though we all sort of knew how it would turn out. It was a nail biter for me. I’m trying to remember a “pleasant” scene. Awesome drama.

Ah, different strokes.

The only thing more amazing than people interested in what celebrities say or think is caring about what celebrities wear to the oscars.
