So who's watching the Oscars tonight?

Yes! Argo!

Definitely an important and even — (gasp) POLITICAL film (sort of) – that just really, really needed to be made and seen and pondered . , ,

Okay. It’s not a bad movie. It’s pure of heart. It just is never going to be remotely important.

And yes, it is really sad that the press goes to the dress because movies have played such a big role in our culture and thought.

I don’t think much longer.

Has someone been spitting in your soup this afternoon, sewhappy? I can’t understand where all the negativity is coming from.

You know…I am aware that I am not supposed to “like” a film about the top 1& who vacation in a really expensive and exotic resort. Too bad…

Well, bevhills, we saw “The Impossible” even though it felt as if we were breaking the law or something even to go see . . . same with Zero Dark.

All I can say is, regimes who have to own and bully the media (which is all Hollywood is) to repress thought . . . well they get their day, they make their trouble but history ALWAYS reveals what they are – which is thugs,of course.

Happy Oscars, Everyone!!

I love the Oscars! The past 7 years I’ve gone to the Best Picture Showcase to see all the nominees. This year was exceptionally strong for me. Absolutely loved Argo, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.

I’m especially excited this year as I’m going to a friend’s Oscar Party where dressing up is encouraged. Thankfully, it is in a part of town where I can avoid the actual Oscar traffic. I live about 3 miles away from the Dolby Theater.

I hated Zero. Was too violent and way too long.

Loved Argo and Silver Linings. Haven’t seen Lincoln yet as I am still plowing through the book. Didn’t see Les Mis - I don’t do movie musicals. Had no interest in seeing Life of Pi and Amour is on my to see list. I’d like to see Beast but don’t know if it is playing anywhere. I don’t know if I can handle The Impossible. :(

Love that you found Zero too violent. Obviously cannot be referring to the big bad TORTURE scenes wherein never a drop of blood or tear is spilt.

The wrenchingly violent scenes are the beginning where only original audio of the Towers is played – How outrageous to be reminding us of that event!!! - and then the various terrorist bombings that killed our intelligence people – How dare we treat those people as if they are really people when of course we are just the evil empire asking for and deserving annihilation!

Seriously, if people saw the move it would just be so very, very uncomfortable for so many . . .

I love that so many in very public positions are disparaging this film. It’s a wonderful roster that is being compiled.

^Whatever floats your boat.

Love the Oscars, even if/when they’re boring. It’s a company town, that’s the industry, it’s a lot of fun to pay attention even if you don’t work in that business. Same for the entire red carpet aspect–it’s showing off the work of the most amazing designers. Though my favorite Oscar dress story was learning that a childhood friend, whose husband was a nominee, found her dress at IIRC Marshall’s or somesuch for a bargain basement price. When her husband won, the cameras showed her cheering. It was a great dress! :)

emilybee–hope the ending of the book hasn’t been spoilered for you. ;)

Helen Hunt is wearing a dress from H&M and it looks great. Obviously it was specially designer but still H&M.

I go to the movies to be entertained. I don’t judge others’ motives for choosing films. People go for different reasons. Whether a movie is important doesn’t really affect how much I enjoy it. I love a good performance. This year, there were many.

I think it’s over for me this era.

I’m astounded by what has transpired and the mutism in our “media” and populace over suppression of a film because it does not align with the current administration’s narrative.

Yeah – I’m astounded and saddened as an American and as someone who deeply loves film.

'm astounded by what has transpired and the mutism in our “media” and populace over suppression of a film because it does not align with the current administration’s narrative.

Did I miss something?
What films are being censored?
You mean Tarantinos latest?

This is fun:[Thank the Academy](Thank the Academy) Every Oscar speech stat imaginable, lots of transcripts of speeches, and even a chance to write your own.

Oh lord, sorry I read this thread. Really, not to pile on, but sewhappy, give it a rest, will you? No one is policing your thoughts unless you let them!

Solid opening. Macfarlane can really sing. Charlize Theron is gorgeous - and I had forgotten that she started out as a ballet dancer! Nice to see Daniel Radcliffe dancing, too. I don’t think the spats on Channing Tatum were a good idea, though.

So happy to see Christoph Waltz win. He was the best part of Django Unchained for me.

Soooooooo happy Waltz won. Totally deserved. And Brave just shows Pixar is a god.

Geez sewhappy, some Senators think that the movie exagerates the role torture played in Zero Dark Thirty. They aren’t blacklisting the film or anything. Just complaining which as Americans I am happy we are able to do. My son saw it because he wanted to see the version of events he think most people will think are real. He had a hard time taking it seriously since they had all the Pakistanis speaking a formal version of Arabic no one uses for speaking. Instead of Urdu or whatever it is that they actually would have used. We didn’t see it because dh won’t see anything violent. I think it is an issue if a film claims to be truthful and it’s not. Maybe better not to make films about such recent events!

I was annoyed by both Lincoln and Argo by the simplifications and over dramatizing they did to make things more exciting, but I know that’s what films do, so I don’t have my panties in a twist about it. Hadn’t planned to see the Oscars, but neighbors called a while ago and we are going over in about five minutes.

I only remember seeing positive reviews for The Impossible.
