so why do people find "The Big Bang Theory" so great?

I’m with you Evitaperon, I’ve given it 3 tries and have yet to be amused. I wanted so much to like the show, because the premise is great. I don’t remember the names of characters, but the last episode I watched featured the nerdy woman and nerdy guy sitting on a couch negotiating their lovemaking plan for the evening. The guy was clearly reluctant and fearful of the woman and they both seemed to score fairly high on the Asperger’s spectrum. GAG

The good writers have been moved off the show. It’s a standard cycle - in the beginning a show gets strong backing with support from an excellent creative team, but once the show has wide spread name recognition and popularity - the best writers are moved to start another project.

Yeah. I want to like BBT, but mostly I’m not particularly a fan.

I’m with somemom, nobody beats Capt Picard.

Number one, make it so!

Connecting the two, Wesley Crusher was definitely my first TV crush   lol

I’m neutral about BBT. Nothing great about it but I still watch it. I don’t understand what Bernadette sees in Howie and Koothrapali’s gf’s scenes aren’t funny at all. The library text dating was so weird.

“Wesley Crusher was definitely my first TV crush”

Too funny! You must be part secret geek to have him be your first TV crush. Not the norm.

There is no secret geek. I’m a proud geek. I think I own more Firefly, gamer, and Star Trek clothes than anything else.

This is why bbt appeals to me. They’re my people!

The only thing I’ve never been able to get in to was DnD which is popular. Bf has to explain those references to me and I explain the Trekkie stuff to him.

Has anyone seen the bbt flash mob?

^^My oldest son did D&D for eight years, starting in fourth grade. These 8+ hours sessions must have sounded like a raucous party to our neighbors. Yelling, clapping, cheering, excitement and soooo much food and soda being downed. We had to leave the house or go outside it was so loud. It must have been too much fun, these guys had a blast.

I am a committed DS9 fan, but Picard will always be my captain. I’d “make it so” for him any day.

My son-in-law plays D&D every saturday for hours with a bunch of other grad students. My daughter, a geek herself, was unimpressed by the whole thing.

MommaJ - that sounded very, well, um …

Another point of discussion in our house: did anniken turn because mace was going to strike the emperor who was “unarmed” rather than take him in???

And I am the picard fan he is THE CAPTAIN (best starfleet) but Janeway is a great capt…she is not as reluctant to sidestep the primary directive…probably makes the time police pull their hair out!

And we saw Transformers on opening day at the Imax…27 of us! At a HUGE after party. Everyone here has their fav superhero mine after the reboots is Cap, Capt. America. Middle son ironman, followed closely by wolverine. Weird seeing the Cap after he was the Flash in Fantastic Four, just weird.

Kat
and Han shot first!!!

Check out the cast discussion sessions at ComicCon on YouTube. There are some funny moments in there. I like the one where they brought out Bare Naked Ladies to sing the show’s theme song, including all of the verses.

I fear your geek card may have to be confiscated–you mean the Human Torch!

Yes, yes!!! I do apologize and I am NOT a geek…my kiddos are!!!

Kat

Your comment about MommaJ’s post really cracked me up, swimscatmom. I was wondering that myself.

BBT theory is so-so for me, mostly because I can’t really relate to the humor.
I’ve liked a few episodes, and been totally bored by a few, so I don’t really watch it. That being said, I don’t think it portrays a negative stereotype of “nerds”. I mean, the show is made by so called nerds for self-professed nerds. It’s almost a pride thing :D

Another thing to like- can analyze the show on several themes. Watching several episodes in a row helps with this. Girl/boy differences in thinking/sexuality. Science/non. Twenty somethings. Parent/child. Childhoods. Various events bring up so many memories of one’s own experiences. Subtle points about how science geeks are just like everyone else in many ways. It is amazing how concepts can be well done in small bits- takes a lot to distill the essence of complex behaviors into a sitcom size scene. I like how once you get the essence of something they move on to other things and tie in things later in the show.

Remember, this is entertainment- fiction/fantasy/escape from reality. I also bet average people relate to a show with people having their same worries, feelings etc. Most people are not the class leaders, the beautiful, popular people. Give all of the negative attributes to characters with high intelligence and you take away the feeling that it is because I’m so dumb that I am not cool, can’t relate to others… I hated Rosannne, not a character I at all wanted to identify with. Nothing positive for those characters. BBT characters have attributes most can’t, yet have the same problems as the average person.

romani, Spock was my first TV crush. Now that’s geeky!

Las, you win. I cannot top that lol. I humbly hand over the geek crown and bow to you!
