Yep, she wins, hands down.

Thanks. :D

Anyway, wis75, regarding your comment about most people not being the beautiful, popular people: I think you put your finger on one reason I like this show so much. As a kid, I was a geeky overachiever (although certainly not in these guy’s range), and I revered and yet feared people like Penny. In TBBT, the two groups come to see the three-dimensional people behind the high school “types.” Just as Penny has taught the guys to be a little more socially adept, they have taught her a little kindness and sensitivity. I liked the episode where Amy and Bernadette called Penny out on having been a high school bully, and made her call her victims and apologize. I can’t see her ever doing that before she got involved with the geeks, and I hope the episode gave some pause to adult former bullies watching it.

Did anyone here ever watch the reality show “Beauty and the Geek”? It was kind of a real-life Big Bang Theory…a group of VERY “geeky” guys and a group of gorgeous and not-well-accomplished women (that is putting it kindly) was put together in a big house and they were paired up. They did various competition scenarios and were “voted off” couple-by-couple. On into the series, there was a physical makeover for the guys. The transformation of BOTH groups was amazing to watch, as the women became less shallow, more sensitive and and more confident in their intellectual abilities. The men became more socially adept, more confident in their self-worth and more relaxed around the women. It was a really sweet show and I hate that it ended…

I like it because it is very well acted.

Yes, I remember that show musicmom, it was very interesting. I remember one guy I was sure was a ringer, and another that really had no hope. I forgot who won it, though.

@LasMa…your courage in announcing your youthful feelings for the Vulcan has given me the courage to say ME TOO!

churchmusicmom, I remember when they were doing auditions on my campus. I was approached by a producer and told I’d have been perfect for the show. :(

(Self-confidence in looks shattered at that moment.)

There is a sub-genre of Star Trek fan fiction revolving around Spock and Nurse Chapel. It is quite large, and highly charged, if you know what I mean. ;)

You ladies have a lot of company.

Ohhhh myyyy…

Yay, dietz!

Awww, RacinReaver: I loved watching that show BECAUSE the guys were all so great on there…in an honest and intelligent way. And if that producer saw in you a guy who could be open and honest with himself and others and who could grow and be open to changes, then i would take that as a compliment.

I always wanted my own daughter to find someone as her life’s partner who would be much more like the “geeks” on that show than any “jock” or frat guy. And that right there is the highest recommendation i can give for geek-dom.

I spent my college years with those guys :-). I love the show!

My favorite Sheldon quote:
“I’m not crazy, my mother had me tested.”

I was explaining this thread to my BF last night. I asked him who my first crush was and he goes “Wheaton!!!” (in Sheldon’s “Wil Wheaton is my archenemy” tone). :)

Hey churchmusicmom, at some places (like CMU) you can be both a frat guy and a geek!
Both RacinReaver and my son can verify that one.

True, true. But my point of reference is the Southeast and schools like the University of Alabama or UGA where frat guys wear blazers and ties to football games and drink copious amounts of beer, etc.
Not too many “geeks” to be found among them, sad to say. Or at least that was always my perception.

My UGA DD says Tech is a good place to find geeky Southern frat boys. I’m thrilled (and relieved) that she prefers the frat parties at Tech. I completely agree that frat and geeky are usually mutually exclusive in the SEC.

Wait, this thread was started by a scientist asking for an explanation of humor? Not to negate anyone’s defense of the show, but I’m calling “Bazinga!”

Can’t count the number of times Scoutson has been told he looks like Sheldon…

Dear Trekkie friends:

Have Fun:

Churchmusicmom, I think that in Alabama geeks mainly attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville (formerly known just as UAH before a previous univ. president insisted on not using the short form.) Southern geeks who want to work for NASA, Boeing, ADTRAN, Teledyne Brown, Lockheed Martin, etc. know that school has strong ties to those, and similar, employers in the area. I understand that UAH has a far different vibe than UA.

I like that link, somemom.
You will be assimilated…
