Southern Methodist University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admission

I called and was told that we should receive a financial aid package in late January or early February. Based on prior posts, the net price calculator seems like an accurate representation of their need-based aid (assuming the data is inputted correctly). Since this is an unprecedented year though with many more applications, etc., I am cautiously optimistic.

Thank you for the information (Aid package in the US mail?).

With the intent of trying to make my sons dream a reality while managing expectations, Wondering if anyone has any personal knowledge of SMU offering Institutional aid outside of Pell, If so, what amounts could we realistically hope for? Best Case Scenario?
Also, any personal knowledge on detailed negotiations that have worked out?
Thank you.

Look at the latest CDS. A tad less than 1/3 got need aid averaging $48k.

A similar # got merit averaging 23.5k.

Do some get both - don’t know.

And that’s averages so yes you need anecdotes.

Did you fill out the NPC? That should show if you’ll get need aid.

Fin Aid Package Question: Son is EA, Q is, we weren’t able to get Fafsa/CSS completed until late Dec. Online it says EA Fin Packages go out mid January. Any insight as to when we may expect Fin Aid package to be uploaded to mySMU if Fafsa/CSS submitted beyond traditional EA timeline? Thank you.

I’m not sure when FA packages are available. We filled everything out on time (I think!) and there’s nothing in S25’s portal as of yesterday. We’re not expecting anything but it would be nice to know for sure.

I was wrong, FA statement is there now. Unbelievably generous, 15K below the Net Price Calculator.

It’s on the my.smu.edu site. At the top after your student logs in there’s a tab for Financials.

Wow, great! Did your student receive an email from the school regarding the FA statement? My student has nothing in the Financial tab

Nope, it just appeared on his my.SMU dashboard.

Oh, my student checked her my.smu and has nothing and she also does not receive a notify email.

Did she look at the top of the dashboard under ā€œFinancialā€? It’s kind of hard to find, I actually only knew about it from a post from several years ago. My son didn’t get an email.

It’s possible too that they’re releasing financial aid in batches. No matter what they’ll provide a statement for you that includes the option for loans, as long as you’ve submitted everything. So if there’s nothing at all there I imagine it’s still coming.

My daughter had an additional 10k scholarship on top of the 30k scholarship in the financial aid letter which was very nice- we were also told departmental scholarships will come in the spring. If she gets decent departmental scholarships it will make the school in the affordable range for us-we do not qualify for needs based aid

Congratulations! That is fantastic! Were you expecting additional aid? We are ā€œdonut holeā€ so hoping for generosity in merit aid to make this doable. Do all of the departments give out additional scholarships? My kid is accepted to Dedman for a science major.

No! We weren’t notified at all it was just in there! We are also in that donut hole - if they can come through with some departmental scholarships as well I think we can make it work.

She does but still nothing as we had to go through the verification process in Dec 2024. I already sent an email to the financial service office to inquire. Thanks!

Glad to hear someone else had to go through verification, as I was worried I was the only one. Thanks!

Thank you! Our financial aid information has been visible for a few days (thanks to your post we discovered it), but finally received the email yesterday. We are thrilled. With two kids in college, it was going to be a hardship and I agree that they were very generous with aid.
