I would have loved to go to UCB (probably the best place in the world for my goal of going into AI safety; CHAI + Stewart Russell), and if I was in-state, I would have probably applied there. Unfortunately, 80k is too much for my parents to afford in any conceivable reality, and they didnā€™t like my idea about moving to California for HS expressly so I could afford these schools.

What Iā€™m saying is that you already have 2 options - UCB and UCLA - which are really excellent options that any student would love (leading research in many fields, excellent job/grad school placement, opportunities everywhere), including many a Stanford acceptee (because HYPSM is a reach for any student).

Try to kick it out of the park at UCB/UCLA, continue to cultivate the attitude that led you to victory in ISEF or speaking to the UN (have no idea about your other extracurriculars, sorry), and you should be at the exact same place as you would be at Stanford (and really also doing the same things that you should do at Stanford).
