Thank you! This is very helpful.
I stumbled on this app today on Instagram. I am in no way affiliated but I found it helpful and thought others might as well. I think it will only be successful if people add reviews (which I did a few). Anyway, just posting for others to see the information and also post their own reviews. Hopefully it is allowable. https://www.ratemyfestival.com/
Does anyone have experience with the Bowdoin waitlist? Has anyone been offered a spot off the waitlist this year (violin) or know when Bowdoin typically begins offering spots off the waitlist?
I have seen this waitlist move, mostly because they announce late and many people have already accepted spots elsewhere. The list is unlikely to move if you are young (14-16 age group). Often, however, I have seen those who only were accepted one session (3 weeks) and waitlisted for the other offered the remaining session. I’m not sure if those offers are made first or not, but I would guess they are.
Thank you so much for sharing your insights and experiences; it was really helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you @TooManyViolinists We will continue to wait and see if a spot opens. The WL waiting game can be brutal when trying to finalize summer plans across multiple programs. Thank you again.
I was accepted to Juilliard Summer Music as a clarinet major. I’m wondering if anyone else has accepted their offer and will be going? I was also accepted to Greenwood and ultimately decided on Juilliard over it. I’m wondering if that was the right choice, and wanted some thoughts.
My kiddo is going to Juillliard Summer Program. He’s skipping a few high level violin camps and a rare paid summer internship program for it. He considers it once in a life time to get to know Juilliard.
At this point you made your decision so go with it! I am sure they are going to be very, very different experiences and you can always apply again for greenwood next year. I am eager to hear from people how the Juilliard program goes. Living in the Lincoln center area of nyc is amazing. Tons of great things to do and places to eat! Have so much fun!
Hi there, I have another question regarding waitlist and deposits. This is our first year applying to summer music programs and since we had no idea what would be my son’s chances, we applied to multiple programs. Now my question is, do we just simply lose the deposit paid for the program we previously committed but later decide to attend another program who put him off the waitlist? The forfeited amount could be material depending on programs ![]()
It happens, but obviously try to avoid it as much as possible. Generally, we try to ask for extra days to make the decision instead of putting down the deposit and then withdrawing. Also, you can really put a program in a bind if you withdraw late, as they may have difficulty filling that spot with an adequate replacement at a late date. This can sometimes give your child/family a bad reputation that could potentially impact other musical spheres like college admissions down the road, though obviously this depends on the program and the reason for the withdrawal.
Thank you for the advice. Yes we definitely would avoid holding onto a spot for too long. Hopefully we can finalize in the next few days and get ready for a productive summer.
This is the purpose of having a sizeable deposit. I believe most programs mentioned that it is not refundable. But of course, you can always try to negotiate.
Hello, and thank you all for sharing your experiences.
My 14‑year‑old violinist is currently waitlisted for both BUTI YAO and the Greenwood Senior Music Camp. Realistically, what are the chances of getting off the waitlist for either program? And if it does happen, around when do waitlist offers typically come through? Thank you!
Pretty much all the results have come out at this point, and most reply deadlines have passed. There are a few that are still filling programs up to mid-April. I would say it is unlikely if you have not heard by then, but there are always cases when a last minute spot pops up due to injury, illness, or some other situation.
I have found programs very willing to share waiting list information, so don’t hesitate to reach out.
If you want to reach out to some programs in Canada such as Domaine Forget and Ottawa University Summer String Academy, they might still take late applicants as exception. The university professors are quite well known also!
Delete - well, it’s music business - I need to find another thread to put this - but for anyone here who might be interested. You’d need to bring a parent to house yourself - but tourism abounds for the parent by day.
Yes - it was first week of March. I do know some kids who turned down spots.
Yes - I have done this a couple of times. No one seems to be mad about it - I figure programs are happy to take your money/desposit and they are used to some people changing plans, which is why they have a wait list. I think if you swapped out really late in the process then it would be more annoying to them (like if they can’t find someone to fill the spot).
