Super Bowl

There is a rumor that McDaniels turned down the Colts job because Andrew Luck is not healthy and may have to have more surgery.

Well, that’s melodramatic.

Free beer at the Eagles parade. One per person.

I’m not buying that excuse at all. Jacoby Brissett is good young QB. And the Colts have the 3rd pick in the 2018 Draft, with plenty of QB options available.

Also, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took over the 49ers last year w/o any QB on the roster, but they drafted CJ Beathard in the 3rd round and signed Brian Hoyer, who was just plain awful. And then after approaching the Patriots before last season about trading Garoppolo, they finally did trade for Jimmy G around 12/1.

So, I can’t believe McDaniels decision for the Colts job rested on the status of Andrew Luck.

Edit: 49ers also signed Matt Barkley too before the season, but they cut him.

Jimmy G just got paid.

News is coming out that he is signing a 5 year deal for $137.5M, an average of $27.5M/year, which is the highest in league history. $90M in the first 3 years, $74M guaranteed.

Pretty good for a guy with 6.5 games of playing time.

The 49ers have the most cap space of any team, but wow. Did they really need to pay him this much?

Would you rather “we” take the same tact that the Redskins did with Cousins and tag him for a few years? Look where that took the Redskins. They lost Cousins and now they have “Game Manager” Smith. And I think the tag for this year was around $23-24MM anyway. What’s a few extra mil? I thought I read that the Pats had offered him $18MM/year sometime back?

Jimmy G looks better than Stafford and WAY better than Alex Smith. Kirk Cousins will get more money and he’s 5 years older and his potential is maxed out IMO. With Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, Matt Ryan, etc. all coming up for new deals, Garoppolo won’t be the highest paid QB anymore.

It’s the going rate and good QB’s are rare. And besides, it’s not all about the stats, he supposedly commands the locker room, the practice field and coach’s meetings. He’s got the “it” factor. I’m thrilled. But I do wish “we” were more towards the top of the draft, because those 1st 6-7-8 picks looked really, really good.

No team should ever do anything like the Redskins. Tagging your starting qb multiple times is stupid. Trading one of your promising young defensive players for a qb 3 years older and arguably worse than the one you have is stupid. The Redskins are stupid. Don’t be the Redskins.

It’s not my money, so I don’t really care, but one reason that the Patriots have had long term success is that Brady has consistently taken less than a top of the market contract. That has generally worked out to be a few million per year, which has been spent either adding quality depth or upgrading at some other positions. The whole “next man up” philosophy only works if you actually have some decent players to step up.

Garappolo made $800K this year. Do you really think he wouldn’t have signed for $24 or $25 million?

Unless he goes to the Browns, I’d be shocked if Cousins lands a deal that exceeds Garappolo’s. If the Browns are smart (I know, oxymoron) they’ll draft a qb. Same with the Jets if one of the top four is available at #6. Maybe the Vikings if they decide not the re-sign Bridgewater for some reason. Most other teams with qb needs don’t have the cap space unless they heavily backload the deal, which causes all kinds of problems down the road.

Now that I think about it, the Jets are probably the most likely landing spot for Cousins.

Just wanted to pop back in and say what a great time we had at the Super Bowl even though our Patriots lost. The city of Minneapolis was great - I would love to have had more time to explore. The people of Minnesota outdid their reputations for being nice - they were over the top friendly and helpful! Everything was well done and organized - we had an easy time getting Ubers all weekend, the security lines were nice and fast and even the airport had hundreds of volunteers to make sure everyone knew where to go.

Both Patriots and Eagles fans were friendly - I didn’t see anybody rude or out of control at all. It is so much fun to be in a city when 90% of the people there are wearing their team gear and are all hyped up for the game. My favorite sign I saw was on a theater marquis - it said something like, “Congrats non Vikings - we wanted to stay home and make hot dish anyway” :))

Of course I hoped to win but I went into the weekend telling myself wouldn’t get too upset if we lost - I didn’t want it to ruin such a special weekend and it didn’t. I mean I was a little sad but I made myself get over it quickly

And I am happy for Jimmy G - really wish we kept him but so happy he gets to finally play and show what he can do.

I’ve been reading about Denver as a strong possibility too.

I have no idea if the 49ers could have save a few mil, but my guess is, if and when cap room is needed, and the cap seems to increase every year anyway, Jimmy could restructure his deal to add depth to the roster, if needed. As for Brady taking less, well, he can, since I hear his wife makes more than he does.

I took a look at Denver’s cap situation. They currently have about $27 million to spend.

Denver picks #5, unless they trade down or out. They will need $11 million or so to sign their draft picks.

Talib is on the books for $12 million for 2018. They can save $11 mil by cutting him, or probably $5-6 mil by extending and redoing his contract. Roby is $8.5 mil, he is in his last year, if they extend him that’s another $4 mil or so. Peko is getting old they could cut him and draft a replacement. Etc.

So they can find the space if they have to to sign Cousins. I think Elway would much rather have a veteran qb than another rookie, and then they can use #5 to boost their o-line.

If I’m Cousins, I think I would prefer the Broncos over a rebuilding Jets team.

His wife makes more than twice what he does, and as a net worth far in excess of his.

But I doubt that’s why he takes less. He’s made almost $200 million in his career, I think he would rather have a better chance at winning super bowls than getting a few extra million. Up to a point, it’s not like he plays for league minimum.

Well, you have to remember that the franchise tag is $23.5MM, his new deal average is $27.5MM/yearly and Jimmy G has never lost an NFL game in his career. :))

The rumblings are that Cousins will get $30MM/year. There are a dearth of good QB’s in this league. Also, if more QB’s adopt the TB12 training method and Purple Carrot meal plan, they’ll also play until their early 40’s. :-j

@momtogkc The local sports talk radio shows here had various media folks on air who attended the SB and not one of them liked the fact that they held the SB in a locale where the temps are typically 0 degrees at this time of year. Also, radio row was held at the mall in the food court. They loved that too. ;))

Did anyone go to the Eagles victory parade today?

We went to the parade. Hosted a bunch of friends from the burbs at our house and walked up to Broad Street. It was a great location because the parade passed by quite close to us. The Parkway is gorgeous but it is so big and you are further from the parade. We wanted tacos or pho but were outvoted for, yes, cheese steaks, lol! We brought them back to watch the speeches. Loved Jason Kelce! I was beyond cold!

How about that parade!

My D flew home to go to the parade - she had a blast! She was on the Parkway by 7:30 am; from 8-11 they broadcast the replay of the SB game sans commercials and half-time show on the jumbotrons. She said everyone was screaming and cheering like it was the first time they had seen each play. From 11-1 they had music playing while broadcasting the live feed of the parade. All capped off by the most epic Philly speech ever. It was a great celebration!

S ( arrived by train 10:30 Wednesday night from Washington DC where he has been assigned ) he stayed with D who lives in Philly a few blocks from art museum. They had a wonderful time.
Couldn’t hear the speeches so watched later at apt.
Now son has to fly back to Chicago and flights canceled due to snow - yeeks

From local tv reports people said the crowds and cold were worth it.
Lines for trains look epic winding for blocks around train stations.

I thought Jason kelce’s use of “f” word awful, so many families and younger children at the event

Re: Jason Kelce’s speech. I am usually wholly in favor of keeping it clean. I will say this, if you listen to the whole speech, he first used “freaking” a lot. But the whole point of his speech was that so many analysts, announcers, pundits, etc were dismissing all parts of this team before the season started (“Doug Pederson is the worst NFL coach”) that the profane punchline really was apt.

As my kids told me in elementary school, when we’d overhear an F bomb on the street, “Mom, we hear that word all the time on the bus!”

So - I agree in theory that the players should leave the curse words off the podium, in the whole context of Lece’s speech (Mummers costume, adrenaline, attitude) I didn’t have a problem with it. It came from his heart and he recognized the pent-up feelings of many Philly fans.

I happened to be in Cleveland the day the cavaliers had their parade. We decided not to go and it was a good decision as the crowds were tremendous. The city was so excited and united, so fun with a city that hasn’t had too much to celebrate with their pro sports teams.

We did watch the speeches and the f word was used liberally, LeBron used it almost every other word. I’m just mentioning it because it happened in another celebration. I think there was a lot of alcohol flowing freely.

^ it’s just that kids look up to athletes - especially the Eagles this year, and for those younger kids it just isn’t something that should have been said in my opinion.
I did listen to the speech live and winced, knowing they will be adopting that language, modeling Jason.
As I watched the early morning local TV coverage I was truly surprised how many families with young children were out for the celebration!

Jason should have used discretion in my opinion-
