Superbowl and Madonna

Yeah, but can you imagine if he purposely does not score the easy touchdown, and the kicker misses the field goal (not likely, but it’s certainly happened countless times before)? I think it was kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario.

For what it was–and watching it on HD/surround–the halftime show was pretty good. I don’t consider it music, however, so whether it was lip-synced or not is immaterial. It was quite a visual, computer-enhanced spectacle, not a musical performance.

My guess is that all of the music was pre-recorded, and most of Madonna’s vocal was as well. When she was interacting with that guy, in the sunglasses, it ‘could’ have been live. The audio was awful–too much sameness, compression, pounding beat, with Madonna’s voice way too low in the mix.

Complain about the lucky comments all you want. In sports, you do not have to be PC. The Giants needed a lot of luck to even make the PO, and had plenty in the past weeks. Yesterday, there were fumbles that went back. Those are lucky breaks. When you some of the most efficient receivers dropping passes they always catch, that is a lucky break.

If you cannot admit they got lucky breaks, you watched the games through colored glasses. And so did I … My anti New York glasses. :)

Prince did this a few years ago…in the rain.

I don’t care if it was luck or not. I’m glad NY won!

The heck with M.I.A. and the horse she rode in on. I’d like to see her give the single finger salute to the government in Sri Lanka, or wherever the rock she crawled from under is located.

"If you cannot admit they got lucky breaks, you watched the games through colored glasses. And so did I … My anti New York glasses. "

As a pats fan, I’m still upset at the outcome of the game. However when a team wins 3 times including at the other team’s home field, it is more than just luck. I have to admit that the Giants are a better team.

While I think M.I.A. shouldn’t have flipped the bird, I find it weird that it’s causing a big controversy–after all, the show also featured Cee-Lo Green, and everybody over the age of embryo has heard the unexpurgated version of “Forget You.”

I mean, I guess flipping the bird is an “obscene gesture,” but isn’t it awfully tame at this point?

Regarding luck: I think both teams had some good luck and some bad luck in the game and over the season. That is what happens in sport. No problem admitting that, xiggi.
Overall, I think the refs did a good job. Fans on both sides will probably see it differently. I think both teams played well. I appreciated a good game. I hope the Pats fans take it easy on Welker and Hernandez.

I am glad the Giants won!

I think Belichek’s decision to challenge the Manningham reception was a mistake. It cost the Pats a badly needed timeout. At that point the yardage yielded by the Pats on the play wasn’t a insurmountable advantage.

I’d say they were two great teams–evenly matched enough that tiny things made a big difference. As I said before, I think Brady showed a lot of class in his post-game comments. Several (neutral, non-NY) commentators I’ve read have said the Welker ball was not as easy a catch as it has been called; not impossible by any means, but not a sure thing. But Welker also seems like an upstanding guy and is shouldering the blame.

Bradshaw will go down in history as having made the most awkward Superbowl-winning touchdown ever. but, in the end, it was a Superbowl-winning TD.

Hail Mary’s don’t usually work (the Manning one against Green Bay excepted, of course.)

And as far as the team having been mediocre “all season,” they played one of the hardest schedules in the league, with arguably the most key injuries. We here in Giant-land were pretty psyched they did as much as they did in the season. team mantra all season long: Finish.

I am one post-embryo individual who didn’t know that there is another and “less palatable” version of that Cee Lo Green song. LOL.

hayden and coureur,

Firstly, I never said that the Giants were “just lucky”. My comment was specifically about the play by Bradshaw. He made a mistake, a huge mistake, and didn’t do what he was instructed. It was clear by the reaction of his teammates on the field right after the play that they felt like pounding him into the ground. Watch the replay. There was no ‘momentum’ issue involved and there was no one around him, so no excuse. In fact, New England was actually negligent to have no one there to push him across the goal line if necessary.

Of course, it was NE’s misfortune to be behind late in the game but the fact that they got one more shot at it with a late possession (that never should have happened!) was the point I was attempting, and clearly failing, to make. There is an element of luck in every game, and for what it’s worth, I was cheering for the Giants.

LakeW - good point; I had not considered that angle. One more time out could have mattered! I was surprised he challenged. I thought coaches had folks watching the coverage and telling them whether to challenge or not. It seemed clear on the network replay that it was not indisputably out of bounds. Maybe he was rushed because the Giants were hustling to get the next play off?
DocT - very gracious. I would be careful stating you think the Giants are a better team anywhere in or near New England. This year, I agree with you.
Great football game! I liked the Dorito bribing dog commercial best.

I watched the show with a house full of 17-year-old males, and my husband. I was the only woman there. It was interesting to contrast the guys’ reactions. The teens at our party all look at Madonna as a middle-aged woman, no matter how good of shape she is in or how sexy her outfits. They know she is the same age as their moms and me. They consider the songs she performed to be oldies – she led off with “Vogue,” which came out in 1990…four years before my son and his friends were born! It creeped them out every time she made a really sexy move with those young male dancers. Too cougar for them. My husband thought Madonna was fun, he likes her old music. I liked watching the teens’ expressions more than I liked the show.

Just an FYI, but singing into a dead mike while your a taped performance is playing is STILL lip synching. Usually ,in a large venue, that’s how lip synching is done.

“I would be careful stating you think the Giants are a better team anywhere in or near New England.”

In the part of NE that I live in, most people are Giants fans - I’m a distinct minority

alwaysamom, I agree with you that most of his teammates weren’t happy about the TD. And I know I’m in the minority, but I think going in was the right move. You just never know what could happen if you deliberately tried to keep the clock running - a turnover, a botched snap, whatever. Maybe I’m risk-averse, but not taking the points seems riskier than taking the points then defending the remaining 50 or so seconds.

H thought Madonna looked good. They are the same age. Blah, I’m not a Madonna fan and in general, don’t really like 50 year olds trying to act 20. I’m also with the people who would rather have some good, straight music rather than a big “show”. ymmv

It was a good game, and I think most Hoosiers were rooting for Eli for the “family” factor. Something we like about little bro winning in big bro’s house, even if Irsay is going to make him leave home. Sigh…he’s been great for Indy and they both are great role models. A classy family.

Wow, interesting the varied reactions on the half time show. Since Madonna begin her career with an intense focus on dance, it makes it harder to age gracefully. She was covered up and for someone who spent most of their career being outrageous, she was certainly within the general bounds for good taste-though I could have done without the camera angle crotch shot at one point.

The representative remark at the party we attended was a woman about 70s commenting “I do that in Zoomba” Everybody laughed, but it was true, her dancing was not as intense and amazing as it used to be, and maybe if she put better shoes on she could have danced more?
