Syracuse Class of 2028 Official Thread

I would suggest validating with your AO rep to be certain but both are scholarships that appear to be separate from one another and those should stack.

I just had my daughter show me her MySlice FA estimate and it’s way off for us too. Other than her $20K merit award, there is no other aid offered. Which would leave us $39K higher than our FAFSA SAI and is $25K higher than what the Syracuse NPC gave us. This also makes Syracuse our highest priced school so far by a lot! (we are still waiting on WashU FA award, so that may suck also).
This is another illustration of why I don’t trust any NPC on any website. I have done them many times and I’m confident I’m filling them out correctly as I’m taking information directly off our tax returns, bank statements, etc. It’s frustrating.

This does say it’s just an estimate, so I guess it could change, but I don’t expect it to change by a lot. Oh well. My daughter really liked Syracuse and would have loved to have been able to seriously consider it. But right now, it’s way too much money for us to afford. :frowning:

Yeah, I share your frustration. 20k in merit is great! I’d be thrilled… We got no merit and no grants. My daughter is high stats and very well rounded, so that’s what is most confusing and annoying. We’ve appealed both; not super optimistic, but as this is her first choice it is worth trying and worth the extra work. SU seems to think we have a lot of money, but joke’s on them

What is newhouses acceptance rate?

I did email and received the appeal form. However, from my research the most that people get when they appeal is $5k. That isn’t going to make any difference at all. Have you heard of anyone getting more than that? To be clear, we were offered none to begin with. My D is high stats, lots of very related ECs, attended Preview Day, interviewed and has emailed with AO. I’m pretty surprise no merit at all was offered. Guess it’s true what they say, Syracuse is stingy!

My friend appealed two years ago and got $5 k more.

Similar story here. We did appeal for merit but my son was quickly turned down. I was surprised though as he is also a high stat student with strong ECs, varsity sports, and leadership clubs. He was accepted into the dual degree program in Whitman School of Management and Newhouse School of Public Communications. However, I am now starting to believe that since he was admitted ED, perhaps it was taken for granted that he would attend Cuse anyway. Since then it has left a sour taste with us especially that my eldest son is also a student here and wrapping up his masters (4+1). As an undergraduate, he received both merit and a generous grant. I also appealed the financial aid package for my youngest, citing that the amount of his award was the same they awarded my eldest five years ago (what about inflation??? LOL). At that time it was only him enrolled in school, now I have three students attending college and the Cuse package does not reflect it.

If he was accepted ED, yes, that’s exactly what the school is assuming - that the kid is committed to the school.

If you look at past threads you can find some evidence that they will get more on appeal but there has to be a reason. The kid/family has an offer letter in hand from a competitor school that ā€œthey got into X school with $30K merit that got them to a COA of $60K/year, can you match that because Syracuse is really my kids first choice and we’re ready to sign now but need a better financial pictureā€. Even in those cases SU is going to be looking to get the family close to the comparable COA, not specifically match a merit number.

This is the reason my D did not apply ED. I figured ED applicants would not be offered merit (or much) since they were pretty much saying ā€œI’m committing to going regardlessā€. My D received merit between $28K and $35K at every other school she was admitted to. Only SU blanked her.

I’m assuming your son will still be attending since he applied ED and it’s binding?

Considering that SU is the highest price school my daughter got in to and the only one not to offer merit, if we appeal and they try to get us to a similar COA of other schools she was admitted to with merit, they’re going to have to offer us around $40K which seems highly unlikely.

You can still opt back out under ED agreement if the school doesn’t meet your financial needs.

He is committed unless something changes over the next month. The other schools he applied to does not totally meet the caliber and networking that Cuse can offer for the program he wants to pursue. We were comfortable with him applying ED because the school reassured us that financial aid package decisions were the same regardless if accepted ED vs. RD and that we can back out if the economics did not add up. Regardless, the school has been generous with my eldest son’s scholarship and grants despite the tuition increasing 20% over the last five years. I was just taken aback that this time around they were a bit stingy. In fact, the NPC which had been spot on for my other two sons (currently at Cuse and Northeastern) was off by nearly $20K from what Cuse offered. When I raised this difference with our assigned FA counselor we were advised not to trust it.

Right - highly unlikely they’re come up with the $40K but if Syracuse sees those other schools/programs as competitors I might expect them to come up with more than $5K.

But if he’s ED they might well take the position that they don’t need to sweeten any pot.

Funny - it’s almost like trading in a car and they tell you ā€œoh, you can’t trust KBB because it over-estimatesā€ but when you buy a car ā€œyou can’t trust KBB because it under-estimatesā€.

Hey FA - you control your NPC, if it’ inaccurate fix it or take it down.

I really do think this is true. My oldest applied ED in 2015 at Newhouse. She did not get any financial help. Fast forward 9 years where we financially better off…my other daughter applied RD and was offered 14K/year in finical aid. Both have very similar stats. I’m totally convinced that my oldest didn’t get anything because she applied ED.

For those like us still waiting on a decision are we thinking this Friday will be another batch? It’s son’s last school we are waiting on.

can you explain what you did to appeal? We got ZERO merit, and a TINY grant. Basically looking at full price COA, which is going to wipe out the 529 by the end of year 2.

Where is everyone seeing the financial aid offer? My daughter was admitted RD last Friday she received 1/2 off tuition leadership award in her acceptance letter but created a myslice and it says financial aid is not available. I don’t want to plan an admitted student visit until we know if it’s affordable. We sent CSS in by deadline. It seems strange to me that they would not release tentative aid for everyone at the same time.

We’re in the same boat, there’s nothing in myslice, and we filled out CSS and FAFSA.

Your child needs to contact their admissions rep and request the appeal form. They’ll then set up a link and email it to you; the link is personalized to each student. I would recommend doing it asap as the appeals get backlogged in a long line…
