Syracuse Class of 2028 Official Thread

Oh that’s hard! So there’s no actual date. I guess that’s how Penn State was too.

Correct - Syracuse (and Penn among some others) rolled out decisions in waves. I’m not sure if it was ever determined that the waves correlated with any criteria like program or In-State/OOS.

I’ve seen about five acceptances posted so far, at least one was international and two were bio.

Best and worse thing about Syracuse for you? Waiting for decisions (hopefully merit $) from Syracuse and UConn before son makes final decision. I guess the obvious is weather? Son also accepted to “warmer” colleges in Virginia and Florida. Picked Syracuse because of high rankings and maybe reputation for giving merit-based aid. Just not sure about location and weather, did not get to visit.

Loved campus, gorgeous. Daughter did a summer class there last year. Wish area around campus was a little nicer. Seems strange that there isn’t more to offer on Marshall street which directly abuts campus. College should invest in cleaning it up. Armory square area nice. But overall love it.

Congratulations! Did you receive an email or did you check your portal randomly?

We are also waiting on decisions from a few schools before making final decisions. Syracuse is the coldest of the schools my D24 applied to, with Northeastern being a close second. She didn’t love Northeastern, however, and is still waiting on a decision there too. She applied to Syracuse because of its reputation for being generous with merit aid as well as checking all of her other boxes too.
We visited in early January, and she loved it—snow and all. I do think if she is accepted, the weather will be a key decision factor for her (as well as merit). Most of her other schools have much warmer weather, and that’s what she’s used to living in Texas.

So decisions could come out any time between now and end of March? On my D’s portal it says late March. Will she receive an email when the decision is available or do we have to just keep checking?

My D really loved Syracuse when we visited on Orange preview day (this was the summer before junior year).

She is interested in business and the Whitman school is very impressive. Great internship opportunities in NYC. They seemed to be generous in how many AP credits they accept. We also liked the competition between the four houses (like Harry Potter). There was a lot more but those things are what I remember.

No one ever mentions this but I really like that most of their dorms are split doubles. Why don’t more schools do this? For a kid who likes her own space but doesn’t necessarily want her own room this seems like a great compromise.

I think the only thing she is afraid of is that she doesn’t think she wants to be involved in the greek system. Also it is one of the bigger schools she has applied to. It is pretty expensive so if we don’t get the aid we are looking for it will be too much.

Someone else mentioned generous merit above too.

If your point of comparison is a Northeastern (high price, stingy merit), it’s a good point but Syracuse has a pretty high gross cost so to compare to some of the other options out there they need to be generous with merit to get closer to a net price that’s attractive.

I haven’t heard of students without need getting much more than $15 K a year in merit. Have you heard more than that? We are also looking at Penn State, Va Tech and UConn so would love to get $20 K to get closer to them but not sure if that is realistic.

If you look at the thread from last year there are definitely specific scholarships to apply for (through invitation mostly) that give more than that but the “admission merit” awards, yes - seems most were in the $15K range. It’s a much tougher debate between $50K v $60K than it is $50K v $75K.

Don’t expect much - if anything - from Penn or VT.

Yes, I already know PSU and VT don’t give merit (my old D got $3 K at VT, this one got none). Expecting something from UConn but no idea what, will find out on Friday. My older D is at Pitt and got $5 K a year.

And you might already know this but Merit is sometimes negotiable.

If Syracuse is that #1 choice of your kid and you need that $X amount more to make it happen - go back to Admissions with that stipulated but be ready to commit. The worst they can say is no.

Yes, I absolutely agree that Syracuse needs to give us generous merit aid to make it realistic to attend. No clue how much, if any, my daughter will be offered (if she gets in). Her view on Northeastern had nothing to do with how expensive it is…she just didn’t love the ‘vibe’ when we visited. She didn’t really like Boston very much, didn’t like the campus, thought the tour guide was pompous, and didn’t like the emphasis on doing a co-op (which I loved because I’m thinking of a better chance of getting a job!). She applied there on a whim so I didn’t do a ton of research on cost or merit aid. Her heart will not be broken if she doesn’t get in or we can’t afford it.
She had the opposite reaction when she visited Syracuse. She loved the town, loved the campus, observed more diversity than she thought (she’s biracial so diversity is top of mind for her), was impressed by the business program, thinks the mascot is cool, etc. It just checked her boxes, whatever those are for her.
Now we wait and see what happens to see if it’s a realistic option!

Yes daughter took a summer class there and loved the split double, and the pod style bathroom where you have a sink, toilet and shower to yourself while you are using it

Do they only release on Fridays?
Also - is there a pattern to how they release e.g. by school/major:accept/reject?

Based on last years threads it’s almost all Fridays. It seemed like acceptances went out the first few Fridays, then waitlists, then rejections…and some rejections came in April. Didn’t seem to be a discernible pattern re majors, oos, etc.

My D22 goes to Syracuse and hers was on a Friday.

We went back to the admissions for more merit they added 5k on top of our 17k. I don’t know if I would say Syracuse is good with merit. My D22 & S24 have gotten better merit packages from private institutions in the same price range

Did you show them a similar offer from a peer school?
