TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@AggieMomhelp Thank you! I’m on the way to CS for our sons soccer game so translating to her on how to check for offers… ?

@daleNchip AP is a necessary evil these days but the good thing about them, is that you don’t have to take the credit for them and use only the ones you absolutely have to, like to satisfy the core curriculum. It is Dual Credit that has to be accepted and transfered. I am not saying they are bad to take, I am saying that not enough guidance is given in taking them as to what classes they will actually replace credit for or count at all in a major. If psychology isn’t required for a major, that psychology dual credit class just ate an elective spot. Where it can be difficult is at universities/colleges that have hour caps on majors to transfer/change curriculum to. Or the Early college high schools with associate degrees that have so many hours that do nothing towards getting into a major at a 4 year university and thus another year worth of classes must be taken in order to transfer in to that major but then they exceed the majors cap in hours.

Not everyone knows what they want to do when they get to college and changing majors happens a lot. Having too many Dual Credit hours can hamper that in some circumstances. I see it in kids from our high school who take the 16 hours of required sciences for pre nursing through Dual Credit and then some, and then are refuses cycle after cycle to upper levels until they take 30 hours of courses at the university where they are seeking upper level nursing.

Like I said, they are not all wrong. There just needs to be more guidance by schools and a plan of action to what is being taken and what the end goals are if known.

@AggieMomhelp … Galveston. She won’t go there. Looks like she will have to enroll Blinn and try to transfer later… which I’m totally fine with, just would have been nice to have Blinn TEAM offer…

@amycakes416 If she applied to Ocean Engineering as her second choice major, Galveston is the only place they offer that major. Mays is full so that was out for her so they placed her in her second choice.

@madeline116 She received an email and a text.

Is Rellis the only campus that TEAM can take classes?

It is my understanding that from Fall '19 the Blinn TEAM is being relocated to Rellis from its current Blinn Bryan location to take their Blinn input of classes. They will set up their schedule to have classes at Rellis certain days of the week eg M/W/Fr then fulfill their A&M class obligation at the main A&M campus say Tues/Thurs

Students do not have to be co-enrolled at both schools during the summer. Realize that after a student begins the TEAM program, only courses completed at A&M and Blinn may satisfy the TEAM admission requirements. (Courses taken at hometown community colleges may still be transferred to satisfy degree requirements, but such courses will not count toward completion of the TEAM program requirements.) Blinn College offers many distance education courses during the summer that will count toward the TEAM requirements while allowing a student to complete them from home.

Previously Earned Credits Any college level credits accepted by TAMU that were earned by a student prior to beginning the TEAM program shall apply toward the Blinn College 45 credit hour requirement.
These include credits resulting from transfer, dual/concurrent enrollment, Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), SAT II Subject Tests, or other recognized means by which credit is awarded by examination.
The use and application of these credits will be determined by the student’s eventual degree program.
After a student begins the TEAM program only credits earned from Blinn College will count toward the Blinn College 45 credit hour requirement.

Enrollment Requirements A TEAM student must meet the following enrollment requirements.
Each TEAM student must enroll in a minimum of 12 total credit hours each Fall and Spring semester with 3-6 credit hours at TAMU and the remainder at Blinn College. Any exceptions must be approved in advance by the Director of the TEAM program.
The 3-6 TAMU credit hours must include at least one 3 or 4 credit hour course that satisfies a degree requirement in the student’s intended academic major. (This course may fill a general elective requirement if any are allowed in the curriculum of the student’s intended academic major.)
The maximum credit hour enrollment for Summer I and II sessions is 7 at Blinn College and 7 at TAMU. The maximum credit hour enrollment for 10-week summer sessions is 10 at Blinn College and 14 at TAMU. The maximum combined enrollment limit for TEAM students in summer school is 14 credit hours.
TEAM student will enroll for courses at both institutions in accordance with published registration periods for all students.
Financial aid will be awarded through TAMU based on combined enrollment between Blinn and TAMU as of the TAMU census date.

So I don’t know how much of this is true so I was talking to a former counselor at one of the big texas colleges and she mentioned to me if I knew how TAMU does their admissi0on process so of course I said no. She said the way TAMU does admissions is they offer auto admits, Blinn, Gateway, full admission, etc to accepted students and those that are still waiting for review are waiting for those student to turn it down so they can offer it to those in reviews. This all could be her experience with the admission process but anyone know if this is true.

@IT22379 Your ex counselor friend is incorrect

A&M has an algorithem system that lets them know if they make X number of offers, they will yield X size freshman class. The deadline to accept is not until May 1. Admissions offers are finished in March.

@thelma2 Thanks I thought what she told me didn’t make sense either. I spoke to someone in admission today at TAMU and they said my son’s decision is in the final stages whatever that means, but im assuming everyone is probably in the final stages. I called them because I thought he got Galveston but they said that was not the case and that he was still in review.

Been lurking for a while, reading these posts every day. Y’all are very helpful and encouraging. D applied end of Nov. and is a review admit. Hoping for College of Geosciences. Attends a highly competitive, non-ranking school. TAMU put her in Q2. 1340 SAT. 3.7 GPA. Lots of AP classes. AP Scholar Award. Great essay. Solid recs. 1st chair cello in Orchestra. German. Astronomy Club. Photography. Volunteer hours at church food pantry. Teacher assistant at local Art School Summer Camp. Accepted to Texas Tech & St. Edwards, but CAP’ed at UT. Waiting on Trinity, TAMU, and her OOS “reach” schools. Today we decided to apply to University of Houston. (Yay! Another $75 application fee!) I’m hoping that action will immediately trigger a decision from TAMU, lol.

@daleNchip I agree…my son has a 4.1 weighted GPA and just barely made 25.4%…Midwqy through 10th grade he’s 295 out of 1176. Our district gives the same multiplier for DC & AP. He’s taking an extra AP class this summer going into 11th…if you’re not in AP (or DC) for all core classes then forget placing anywhere near 1Q…or even 2Q I guess. I hate the “game” but it seems to have become a necessary evil. He’s got his heart set on A&M though and is working hard to make it happen…we’ll see when it’s out turn in 1.5 years lol.

@IT22379 All the applications are in the final stages of the admissions process so she is giving your generic information hoping to make you happy and not ask her when admission decisions will be released. Only the Man Behind the curtain knows that
Oh Dang. No ruby slippers emoji ;(

@Thelma2 thanks to your advice, we’re being very careful about what my son is taking DC vs AP. We checked the course sheets for his desired majors at A&M before fininshing his 11th grade registration.

@cmehope my son was offered Blinn TEAM with almost identical scores to your D but for slightly higher GPA. Wanted Geosciences too. I would think she stands a good chance. Not too many posting with geoscience interest so hard to say what success others are having with full admit. Best of luck.

@IT22379 I think it really depends upon the college of study or program. With the business and engineering schools being highly ranked, A&M is often the first choice over UT in state. But for other programs, it may be different. According to admissions, college of science still has full admits, PSA, Blinn, etc offers to be sent and to expect those early to mid-March. I think your friend is right that they’re waiting to see how many slots will be declined by auto and academic admits. For instance, my daughter has two friends who are both academic admits, but have decided to go elsewhere because A&M either didn’t offer a full ride as other schools did or A&M was their safety school.

When we did the campus tour yesterday, both guides stated they’d heard the college of science is taking longer and longer to offer full admission. I’m sure the longer they wait for some of these kids to decline the offers, the more precise their margin of error will be.

Have any gateway or PSA offers been sent out yet?

I haven’t seen many people here mention being accepted to Liberal Arts/Psychology or English. Those two are my daughters preferred major choices. Just curious if anyone else has seen a ton of acceptances with those majors. Easy to miss things here with so much activity by the second.

Howdy! I’m homeschooled with a 1310 SAT in review (1st choice mays, second choice economics) since i’m homeschooled i’ve taken tons of dual credit classes at my local community college (i’ll finish this semester with 39 credit hours) so my question is, if i were to get blinn team, do my 39 hours not go towards my blinn team hours? if not, where do they go? A&M is the only school I have applied to and all of my credits go towards mays degree plan and all of them transfer. Thank you if anybody can answer!
