TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@aggiegirl88
It really is shocking to me to hear scores like that haven’t gotten in.
Every day I read everyone’s posts and know of my own daughter’s stats and am in disbelief.

@lulu9002
My daughter is still in review
1310 SAT
4.1
28 ACT
Top 16%
In a leadership program at school
Mentors elementary, middle, and high school kids every day, lots of church volunteering and around our city. Job all years. An awesome rec letter.

@Mommydoodle no one really knows with 100% certainty so therefore, it is speculation. the reader can choose to believe or not believe. TAMU puts it in black and white here:

http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/admitted

your application and essay
class rank and SAT and/or ACT scores
extracurricular activities, community service, leadership, employment and summer activities
talents, awards and honors

@Mommydoodle The Admissions Officer, who is official TAMU, states on that forum that rank and test scores are 50% of the decision and they use those to predict a GPA that an applicant will earn at TAMU. Once they establish that, then they start considering everything else.

The folks who states otherwise, are misinformed. If they would like to argue that point, they should go tag @TAMUAdmissions on TexAgs and set them strait. I am sure they would appreciate the information.

This is copied directly from TexAgs as posted by the AO

There is absolutely no difference in the way the decisions are made for Blinn Team, Gateway or full admits for review applicants. A&M uses a holistic process for all of them. They look at class rank, test scores, extracurricular activities, essays, etc. Blinn Team and Gateway are just different forms of freshman admission.

The rank and test scores are viewed together, and they make up around 50% of the decision. The essays, personal achievement, etc. make up the other 50%. For a student that comes from a non-ranking high school, we use their GPA in relation to their school’s grading scale to assign a quartile ranking. Other than that, GPA is not even considered in the process.

When they look at the rank and test scores, they determine a projected GPA the applicant will earn at TAMU. They use algorithms to combine a student’s rank and test scores and it produces 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, so on and so forth. Once they see what a student’s projected GPA is, they begin weighing all the other components.

When TAMU assigns the class rank, they don’t consider any information from the school about previous years. We look at the student’s GPA in relation to their school’s grading scale. As of right now, TAMU does not consider where a student attends high school when making the admission decision.

@aggiegirl88 There are people on this forum way more qualified/experienced to offer advice on your query than me but I’d just wish to highlight something I’m sure I read on here ( as I can’t think where else I would have read it) about TAMU possibly considering in the future doing away with academic admit (1st Q and specified test score minimums) as a pathway for guaranteed admission. Please check with others - I’d hate for your daughter to spend a year upgrading her SAT score for it not to pair with her class rank and ‘open’ the doors she desires. I guess a call to admissions office would clarify this for the class of 2024 applicants.

@Thelma2 *Straight…

@Scotsfi Doing away with the Academic Admit was posted by an anonymous poster on TexAgs who heard a rumor from someone. At this point, there is no credibility behind it.

@Thelma2 Do you have a link to the forum you discussed above regarding class rank and how TAMU assigns class rank? Thank you!

@Thelma2 Thanks for your quick clarification…appreciate it. Truly didn’t wish to bring any more misinformation to this resourceful forum

@Scotsfi I saw that too but thought it started for Fall 2020 applicants, so I thought it might be an option still for Spring 2020. But yes I would confirm with Admissions before taking that route. I was more interested to hear if anyone on this thread thought a gap semester and applying for Spring 2020 was a good option versus transferring in because I am reading that transferring is very competitive too.

Yes of course anything to help.

I was 25/218
With a 3.43 gpa
SAT 1120
Class President, Student council vp, debate captain, 4 years of tennis and golf with captaining, NHS trustee, NTHS, NAHS, Colin club, YIP program, etc 500+ voulenteern hrs

8 DC/AP
2 strong lors mentioning my metal illness and my lack of support

@Mommydoodle it appears that way based on the evidence I’ve seen on this forum this year and last and also some conversations I’ve had with some TAMU folks.

Does it really matter what school you graduate from? Like does someone who is A&M graduate looking for a job in business get viewed the same as someone who is a UT graduate applying for a job? Or someone from UH get viewed the same as UT and A&M applicants. Like can you still get a good job no matter what college you go to?

@trinley then that would seem to contradict everything @Thelma2 posted directly from A&M. Because if rank & SAT/ACT count for 50%, how can the essay, which is only one of many portions of the other half, completely override that first 50%?

I guess it seems logical to me rank & scores would outweigh an essay. Only you can earn your rank & SAT/ACT score. But someone else could easily write your essay. In the fall we had someone posting on our neighborhood FB page who was doing just that. Writing essays for college apps for $$

so are the only options left gateway and PSA??? does anyone know?

@Mommydoodle I didn’t say it overrides anything. Essays, ECs special circumstances etc are part of the holistic review just as @Thelma2 stated. I’m not saying you have to like it. But you do have to accept it. Im not here to debate the merits of one applicant over another. I, @thelma2, @bluebayouz @AggieMomhelp and others offer here is our experience and our insights as best we can. It’s worth what you pay for it and hopefully if you child is granted admission you will be back to help those to follow.

Keep in mind that any questions pertaining to engineering is different until more recent years when they began general engineering and class 2021 went holistic review for the major.

@texag92

Since we are all friends here, I wanted you to know that last October, there were TWO days that I came home from work early so I could obsessively refresh my screen. No joke.

              Someone has done the math already to asses how much time can be spent by big public schools on each application. The idea that this is an individualized, nuanced process seems highly unlikely for the very vast majority of applicants.
