@firsttimeCSmom That is GREATNESS
I have a problem. LOL
@trinley actually you did kinda say that. My question was does an essay trump higher rank & SAT scores & you responded
āit appears that way based on the evidence Iāve seen on this forum this year and last and also some conversations Iāve had with some TAMU folks.ā
And I know I donāt have like it or agree. As I said before, no one seems to agree on much on here anyway.
I guess we all just need to remember yāall are speculating just like the rest of us. No one on here knows for certain
I am still in review, does that mean that I might get denied or PSA tomorrow?
Amen @Mommydoodle ?? Tried to make this point the other day (speculating like everyone) and it did not go over too well, and was definitely taken the wrong way, but itās the absolute truthā¦
@sma1234 the āAggie Networkā is strong. Business Honors program has 100% job placement and/or grad/upper level school placement upon graduation, 100% internship completion. The power of the Aggie ring is strong.
Not to say other schools donāt have great stats as well, but there is definitely worth to the Aggie network.
(Btw-I am not an Aggie, but married to one. I have seen this 1st hand, for years. It was even mentioned how strong the Aggie Network is, at a local Mays dinner we attend earlier this week).
@52AG82 Yeah but I dont think it matters over what college you graduate from when you apply for a job just that you performed well in college. I know a lot of people that won
t even consider applying to A&M because of the historically white Aggie culture which some people hate. Anyone would choose UT over A&M any day come on now.
@pleasehelpme15 and @2019graduatetx Admissions has told many today that only Gateway and PSA offers are left. Take it with a grain of salt, but they have been consistent in that answer when called by many today.
@firsttimeCSmom you are a riotā¼ļø?
@2019graduatetx many are still in review. there is no drop dead date that you will receive a decision. admissions has been inconsistent in their information. thereās probably a few more weeksā¦if I were guessing.
@sma1234 that is an outstanding question and good for you for bringing that up. Where you graduate from and your major (unless professional major) really only gets you your first career job. Yes you can have Aggie or longhorn connections but you can also have lumberjack and Bearkat connections as well. If you do well at whatever college you go to, and you have set yourself up with internships etc, then you will be fine. The next career move will be based on your performance at your first job (assuming you arenāt job bouncing).
Before yāall start jumping on this, Iām speaking in generalities. Yes there are exceptions but I donāt feel sma1234 is wanting that in-depth of an answer.
As for whatās left to hand out⦠we havenāt heard of any full admit offers in weeks or team offers since last week. Gateway and psa are rolling out. While stats are staggering (good) and still in review is baffeling. I hope that means there are still some fulls left. But if you want an honest opinion⦠nah who needs that lol
I canāt wait to wake up tomorrow to hear people got tabs cause I want a happy Friday!
@AggieMomhelp Thank you for the info! I hope the same tomorrow too!
So I may be stating the obvious but if you get an offer accept it ASAP. My daughter got Team last Thursday and she never responded as she is going somewhere else. Today she got an email that her status had changed and when she logged in it said the option offered to you is no longer available. So after making these kids wait 7 months they withdraw offers after a week. So ridiculous. Thankfully it did not matter as she had already committed elsewhere but do not want someone else to miss out.
Yikes @notanaggie21 thatās crazy. I typically agree with tamu but on this⦠Iām a hard no. Not cool. Glad your daughter is set!!!
Iāve been following the conversation on the holistic review process and have hesitated to comment because I do not know exactly how tamu does their holistic review. However, the private school my kids go to arranges every year a mock holistic review process where they invite admissions officers from colleges that are trying to recruit graduates and every year it seems to be almost exactly the same even though some of the colleges change so I have to guess the process is similar across the board. So for anyone that has not been through one of these and is interestedā¦
Once they get past the objective process of weeding based on hard scores and then have a pile of candidates left that they need to choose for the remaining spots left, they basically describe a round table process that continuously repeats until they have gone through the whole pile. They weekly distributed a packet for each candidate being reviewed that week, that includes their whole file, each person participating in the round table reads each packet and then at the end of the week they get together to decide who gets in and who doesnāt.
For these mock holistic reviews the school invites parents and these admission officers to make up the round table. What I have always found so interesting is reading a whole file on a person moves well beyond hard numbers anymore. People get attached to a particular candidate because they connected to something in their essay for example and fight for them. Or someone is impressed with a candidates extreme work ethic or athletic ability and they fight for them. I remember one session in particular where a kid had near perfect scores on SATs but just average GPA and rank in high school. From his written answers and essay you could tell he thought very highly of himself and seemed to think high school was beneath him and that was his explanation for why his GPA didnāt match his SAT scores. That arrogance in his file didnāt get anyone fighting for that kid and despite his great SAT scores he did not get admitted during the mock holistic review. So the admission officers basically told us that everything you do and write in a college application has to introduce someone to you in a way that they will both remember you and relate to you enough to want to fight for you.
So in this whole discussion about how did this kid with 200 points less get into TAMU when this other kid did not; I can only guess that kid did a very good job making whomever read his file feel like they both knew him and believed he would be a good fit for tamu.
@Thelma2 @AggieMomhelp I want to thank you for the countless hours you have each put in to try to guide us through this nerve-wracking time. You have been doing this for years and have compiled data that I donāt even want to try to keep up with. One of the wonderful things about A&M is that an actual person reviews each application. (Or more like 2 or 3 people review it) Some universities do not go through such a personalized process. This, however, means that we canāt tell exactly what that person is looking for to differentiate one outstanding candidate from the next. It might just so happen the person that is looking at 2 almost identical applications feels that FFA participation is 1/1000 better than art awards or 200 hours of community service is 1/1000 better than 200 hours on a sports team. Does that mean that the one who gets in is any ābetterā than the one who doesnāt? No. It means that they only have so many spots and somebody has to be the one who they donāt have room for. I am certain that very few āundeserving ā students are admitted. It just stinks when our student is the one left out.
Letās be clear real quick⦠the ladies/men on here who are answering questions are knowledgeable and provide links etc for peeps to do their own research. What we speculate on is if your child will get in based on stats because we are asked to. The other speculation is what is left to be. Just because what I say doesnāt go with what the 18 year old admissions phone rep says, doesnāt mean Iāve been wrong. And ive never said with certainty. I hope Iām wrong. I want all these amazing students to be aggies and carry on the tradition of excellence. But dont say we are speculating. You ask opinions, we give it. That in and of itself is speculation. It goes without saying. We arenāt saying we know every decision of admittance and whatās left to hand out. But I know more than someone that hasnāt gone through it and has been involved for 4 years. Just saying. Please donāt make this about us. We truly want to provide info. The opinions are free (just ask my husband).
@2xAggieMom your post came while I was typing Sorry and Thank you!!!
@sma1234 , I know a lot of people (me included) who would/did choose A&M over UT.
A&M is conservative. Not so sure about the white culture you speak of. I think youāre listening to way too many stereotypes. Had 3 roommates who were minorities and I know they didnāt experience that.
At the end of the day it really doesnāt matter where you get your degree from. Just do your best wherever you end up.
@sma1234 My son two years ago turned down UT Mechanical Engineering for Texas A&M so that is not true at all. He felt UT was more of a city feel and the people there a lot colder then at Texas A&M and I have to agree; I have never seen a friendlier campus. Itās all what each kid finds most important to them and where they feel they best fit in.
A&M values free speech which is a really good quality about it.
