TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

So, if you have 12 DC credits you could conceivably transfer after one semester? With a “missing button” it looks like my son will be heading to his Plan B of TAMUGalveston.

Question, anyone who is a BIMS/Biology major that is still in review. Does everyone in this major still have change of major & withdraw app tabs? Anyone had tabs removed in these majors?

@aggieTay01 I cannot speak for everyone but ours and @JaceyK are still in review and have our buttons. I have not yet heard of anyone with this major losing buttons yet. We don’t know exactly what that means but there is not a PSA pathway for BIMS. We also have not heard of anyone getting McAllen yet either…that being said this is a small subset on this forum.

@AggieMomhelp Can you clarify for me… My daughter has 12 hours DC to start and if she take 12 hours Fall 2019 at Blinn can she apply for Spring 2020 Transfer? Do these fall semester hours need to be CBK courses? She was wanting to transfer into BIMS, there are 36 hours of required coursework listed on transfer course sheet (all bio, chem, physics and math), that would take appx 2 years to complete, would she not be considered eligible for Spring 2020 transfer since those classes are not complete?

@TMImomof2 I don’t want to fill this thread up with my gushing and make others sick of seeing me but I’ve had 2 sons do the PSA at 2 different system schools and for our family, the resounding answer is “YES, it is worth it!” My sons loved the fact that now they were the ones in charge of their path (instead of an unseen admission person) and I liked some of the benefits of smaller classes and more individual attention for their first year of college.

My daughter applied to Biology major in October and hers application is still in review and I don’t see the button to change major.

@aggiegirl88 I would recommend calling and talking to an advisor in BIMS. My daughter had 9 DC hours of health science related classes, including her CNA and EMT certifications, that they said will not count because they considered them vocational. Also, my daughter is planning to switch to the Psychology BS major because she is interested in neurology so the course schedule is super interesting to her specifically. Plus, it only requires 24 hours and is not as competitive for transfer. It will provide a lot of the requirements for Med School and just a few that would need to be added. How about that Organic Chem elective! LOL

@DD1000 keep us posted on what decision you receive…most of us with buttons seem to have BIMS as primary and some with Biology secondary. Good luck!!!

My daughters first choice is Biology and second choice is Biochemistry

@aggiegirl88 correct. Sciences are one of the hardest to transfer into because of all of the requirements. Transferring in spring is very tough because they will defer you in all majors because there are no college semester grades. In my opinion, staying a full year at CC is best choice. Saves money for sure. And you can get your ducks in a row with classes. If she needs a ton of sciences then yes, she will need to complete BUT she can apply the semester she is completing these courses. She’ll get deferred but won’t or shouldn’t have to wait. I would go speak with advisor at tamu this summer. They are so good about looking over transcript and laying it out there in black and white.

Holy nuggets. I just pulled up the required courses for transfer into bins. That’s the strictest transfer requirements. They want all CBK completed. Is she sure she wants bims??? May be a better route with the same end result out there. Zooology. Biology etc. just check out those requirements.

@AggieMomhelp I know right!!! BIMS is really tough and requires 45 hours instead of 24. That is why we reassessed the BIMS route  She will wait to take those hard core science classes until she is already accepted into TAMU.

@AggieMomhelp Agree, will look at alternative majors. She was looking for pre-med track. Which advisor is best to meet with first, one in Admissions or one in the specific College?

@aggiegirl88 not admissions. Since now transfer, look at all the different degrees that will set her up for med school. Pre reqs for med school being the most important. Then check out transfer sheets. After y’all select best major for her, then I’d meet with them. You’ll will want to have all your questions ready. Advisors are super busy and you’ll feel rushed and might panic lol. Been there ?

McAllen and Brownsville are pretty big and thriving places now. It sure would be nice to hear from someone pursuing engineering, BIMS, or another major available at the McAllen campus. I have taught some, and maybe that is why I think of instruction first rather than location for early college studies. For upper level work and certainly grad work, it’s hard to argue against lots of good campus resources.

@AggieDreamin yes, I do know of at least 2 kids from our high school who went straight Blinn, and didn’t get in. One was trying for Business, the other was some type of Ag Education. The Ag-type major tried for 2 years, is now at Sam Houston. The other trying for Business is now getting a Business degree from Rellis (if that is possible? At least that’s what she’s saying. I don’t know the full story, but for sure she did 2 years at straight Blinn, never got into TAMU). But we do know 2 kids who have not been successful in transferring in to TAMU, coming from Blinn.

@AggieDreamin @Aggiegirl88 and everyone else too! - This morning I managed to navigate myself to a specific thread on this CC re. PSA. It has some TOP tips and detailed responses about the importance of valid course selection at a PSA school to facilitate the transfer process and there’s some helpful insight on a couple of the system schools. Def worth a sneak peak. I was just late to the party on this - but it’s a wee gem  Feel sure you will recognise some of the contributors from this thread.

Same I did Biology as my first and Psych as second and I dont see the change major button. Here are my stats real quick (you can find them in another comment too)
-Applied November
-2nd quarter
-4.68/5 (weighted) + 3.53/4 (unweighted)
-1370 SAT
-A lotttt of extracurriculars and volunteering and officer positions

Other TAMU system schools are offering 4-year degrees taught at RELLIS facility. This is all just starting up.

@MomHopesNxtGenAg . Yes we visited the RELLIS campus a few weeks back. There’s a new building in construction - will be ready for Fall '19 and the students currently on system school 4 year degree courses in the RELLIS building will decant there. It’s just across carpark. This will create more space for Blinn TEAM and general Blinn CC classes in the current RELLIS building. We learned that you can now take straight Blinn CC classes at RELLIS - you can’t mix/match Blinn Bryan /RELLIS - rather nominate a campus of your choice. This campus has so much land for development around it I can only imagine it will mushroom in the future.
