@AggieMomhelp with no offer yet for my daughter, what are your thoughts on sitting out Fall2019 and retaking SAT for academic admit score, and re-applying as a freshman for Spring2020? Just wondering if this would be quicker and more definitive way to get into A&M AND desired major?
Definitely an option. Thatās going to be personal decision though. I would talk to advisor and even HS counselor about that. I donāt have any experience or reference point for this.
@Scotsfi How do you know which Blinn campus to choose?
@Aggiegirl88 First & foremost Iād check you can get all the classes you need at one campus. If both Blinn Bryan & RELLIS can fulfill your desired schedule then Iād think it would come down to campus preference and location. RELLIS is a very new building. It is, at this point, a smaller campus than Bryan but growing. There are no dorms at RELLIS so you would have to commute from CS or Bryan. It is only about 12 miles out of CS and there is a bus (#47) that runs from A&M main campus every 25 mins which any student in the area can use. If you had your own transport thereās a large carpark at RELLIS which youād have to buy a parking pass for. If you are seriously considering straight Blinn then Iād def recommend a visit around both Bryan & RELLIS - see which one feels a better fit for you. Hereās a link to their website and they have a campus/who we are type video presentation. https://rellis.tamus.edu/about-us/
@AggieMomhelp @Thelma2 What do you guys recommend I should do? Should I do engineering at galveston for one year and then transfer to mechanical engineering preferably my sophomore year or should I attend UH and study either business/engineering there and then transfer to A&M after a year? Which option is the most easiest way to get to A&M after a year cause I have heard transferring to majors like business and engineering are highly competitive.
My application status doesnāt allow me to switch my major anymore but Iām still under review is that a good thing?
Is it completely impossible to still get a gateway offer? Iām still under review but the button to change my major is gone. I really want gateway because I feel it is the best option for me and if I get the transfer option I feel like Iād just choose to attend another university.
@sma1234 I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding on how Galveston and engineering works despite the wealth of information provided to you on this forum. So, I will try to explain it to you the best I can. Galveston is full admittance to TAMU. You do not transfer anywhere. After your first year you simply move to CS after completing ETAM. Your freshman year you (as everyone else in engineering) will be a general engineering major. You then apply to your major through ETAM (ie: mechanical, civil or whatever) in April of your freshman year. You do not transfer. If you do not know what ETAM is, google it or simply go to the engineering website at TAMU. It explains the process. Once you have read through the information and if you have specific questions I are some others will be happy to assist. Engineering is one of the most challenging majors there is. You will not be spoon fed. My son spent 15 hours studying for his last calculus 2 test.
If your goal is to go to TAMU then you have that admission already. It makes no sense to go to UH and then try and transfer a year later. You will be placed at the end of the line after PSA, PTA and engineering academies. If you want to be a business major then UH may be your best bet but donāt count on transferring to TAMU Mays. They only take 100 transfers a year from what I was told at the TAMU transfer siminar last year. They turn away many many 4.0 applicants.
@sma1234. If your goal is to be at TAMU, take your full admission offer to TAMUG if it is feasible for you financially, etc. The odds of transferring to Mays are slim, but there are other business studies you could pursue (business minor, Industrial Distribution, University StudiesāBusiness). If you know for sure that you want a B.S. degree from a business school itself, pursue this at UH. If you want engineering at TAMU, your odds of transferring into TAMU from UH for that are not guaranteed. I believe strongly in the enduring value of an engineering education for anything afterwards. All my experience has led me to that. At the same time, I very, very highly revere those with true business talent and vision.
@sma1234 if you have acceptance to UH Bauer Business, that is a strong school. UH Engineering is definitely an up & coming program as well.
Unless I missed something, have you gotten any form of acceptance to TAMU, or are you still waiting? You canāt just apply to Galveston, to be in the Engineering program; thatās not an option.
Options at TAMU are dwindling quickly, and if youāve not received one yet, I say go for it at UH! Embrace all things Cougar. It is TOUGH to transfer into TAMU Mays and/or Engineering, so if youāve been accepted at UH in either of those, take it!
@52AG82 Yes, I have gotten three pathways options for engineering on saturday and chose engineering at galveston since blinn bryan was full.
@sma1234 has a pathway into TAMU engineering via the Engineering at Galveston program.
As @52AG82 is pointing out, UH has many good possibilities, especially if you could move freely between business and engineering majors as your thinking matures. You will develop friends wherever you go, as well.
Could you ask us specific questions for your decision-making process, @sma1234?
I missed @sma1234 pathway option post-congrats! Then if you want Engineering, thatās a great offer!
If you want Business, Iād pursue UH Bauer.
Scroll past the Acadmic APpointment Meeting Times to make a prospective student appointment for BIMS advisor meeting.
This is the person you will want to meet with Biomedical Sciences Kristina Agan kagan@cvm.tamu.edu 979-845-4941
When my middle child (hs class of 2015) was looking at colleges, we visited A&M several times, twice meeting with BIMS advisor, and vet school open house. They were very good to us every time.
Iāve been reading comments on here sporadically for about two weeks and thought I would add a little bit of information. I have a daughter who is currently on Blinn TEAM and a another child who applied to A&M this year. Wish I would have known about this site last year! My daughterās first choice was BIMS and second Chemistry. She did score a 4 on AP Chem which she took her Junior year in HS but A&M advises against using those hours because its worth 8 hours of Chem and then your child would go straight into Organic Chem. We chose not to use the AP hours. Our daughter made a 97 in Chem her first semester of college, taking the AP class in high school wasnāt a waste because she is better prepared. She takes classes at A&M (M/W/F) and class at Blinn RELLIS campus (T/Th). A&M recommends only going to one campus per day. This has worked out great for her and she LOVES it! The class sizes (at RELLIS) are smaller and she doesnāt have to fight for parking at the Bryan campus. She chose to live off campus which by the way is cheaper than living on campus but for their first year, highly recommend living on campus.
When we went to NSC last Spring, A&M acknowledged the sacrifices that these Blinn TEAM students were making (i.e. passing on other great offers, willingness to go to 2 separate campuses, etc.) just to be Aggies. We had a long talk with our senior regarding this because he has been accepted to several business schools and I would hate for him to start out straight Blinn and something happen and then in a year or two heās scrambling to get back into a school he has already been accepted to or even worse, settle for a school that he refused to apply to in the beginning.
At NSC, they will help your child with their schedule (parents are not allowed in there during that process). I recommend signing up for the first available NSC so that your child gets the classes/times they want. Recommend FISH Camp and/or Impact, my daughter did both. Would recommend your child apply for several organizations because they are not guaranteed a spot so if they apply to several then they are more likely to get in one.
Straight Blinn vs. PSA - In my opinion (so take it or leave it), I have had 2 older boys (one who went straight Blinn and one who started out at another university but didnāt want to go back in the Fall but had missed the transfer deadline) who went to Blinn and neither one did what they were suppose to in order to transfer to A&M. This happened for different reasons but the outcome was the same. If your child is determined, has great study and time management skills, then this may not be an issue. If your child is undecided on what they want to do, then I do not recommend straight Blinn. If your child goes straight Blinn, then they will live off campus and for some, thatās a hard adjustment. Obviously, this depends on the child. From the parents and students that I have talked to, living on campus makes a huge difference. Also, neither of my boys got involved so I highly recommend that your child get involved in something (A&M related) and meet kids who are either Blinn TEAM or A&M students, to help them feel a little more connected. I have known kids who have started at Blinn and transferred in but I do think itās getting increasingly harder. If your child does PSA then at least they can be a smaller university setting, live on campus and focus on getting thru those classes to transfer. My daughter has 2 older friends who went to Tarleton and then transferred into A&M this year so itās doable.
We have six children so I have seen a lot of different scenarios, just thought I would share a little of our personal experience.
Yes, @sma1234, you have a full admission offer to TAMU (in engineering), but you would start out at TAMUG and transition to CSTAT after going through the same ETAM process as all other entry engineering students. Thank you, @trinley. When I have a minute this evening, @sma1234, Iāll write again on this thread. I believe you just need a little encouragement to help you make this transition.
I totally missed that @sma1234!! Congrats. That is a huge offer. Have you and your parents visited Galveston campus. Itās definitely worth it to help you decide. But my choice you were my kiddo⦠Galveston over UofH if you are wanting to be an Aggie.
Side note on business. You can always minor in business! Win win!!!
@sma1234 You have a year and an entry level engineering class at tamu galveston to decide on which majors to apply for ETAM in the spring of your freshman year but if you are interested in both engineering and business, perhaps look into the industrial distribution major within engineering at tamu. If you are interested in that major then it might set your mind at ease to know that it is one of the easiest to get into, and one of the only ones that minimizes the calculus you have to take to just 1 and 2 I believe.
@MomHopesNxtGenAg Yes, I think I do need some encouragement and guidance. You have been very helpful and supportive along the way. I appreciate it!
@AggieMomhelp Thanks. I am planning to visit the galveston campus with my parent over spring break once I set up an appoitment with the admissions counselor about my current situation. Do you have any idea how I set up an appointment I went on the website but no info.
