TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@aggiegirl88 you asked a great question! What activities are there at Blinn in Bryan for students to do? Are there any? I know Brenham campus at least has a dorm and some Athletics.

Hi @aggiegirl88 , yes I currently attend blinn in Bryan and I love it. There are some organizations that accept both blinn and A&M students, so that’s great! For football games, my roommates both attend A&M, one was full admit and the other was Blinn Team, so they usually pull tickets for me and we all go together which is fun!! I’m currently an Allied health major. Surprisingly there are a lot of A&M students that take classes at blinn too, so you get to meet a lot of different people. I currently drive to Blinn, mainly because the bus route doesn’t come by my apartment, but if I could choose I’d rather take the bus than drive, but it’s a personal preference.

@stillhopeful581 I just realized that @tryra2k8 is Allied Health transfer student at Blinn! She may be a wealth of information you and how to navigate a successful transfer.

@stillhopeful581
The reason that people that have Dual Credit may not a good fit for PTA, and it does depend on the total number of hours, is that Dual Credit must be transferred to the college(s) attended and applied as credit. The applicant then must take an additional 30 hours to satisfy the PTA program requirements. If too many Dual Credits come in at the start of the program + the additional 30 credits required from the program, this can put an applicant over the capped amount of hours allowable to transfer to a major.

AP credit is a little different in that though you have the credit, you don’t have to apply it. AP credit cannot be claimed to satisfy the PTA requirements. If after a student is at A&M, and they still have UCC requirements to satisfy and have the AP credit, they can exercise it later. Some see not being able to claim the credit they paid for the testing as a waste of money.

As far as the Allied Health major goes, you need to look further ahead at applying to upper level nursing schools and the requirements. Many nursing students when applying to upper level programs, will apply to more than one school. Some universities have limits to how many times you can apply. Many universities give preference or consideration points to applicants who take the pre-nursing at their school or in the area and other factors.
Your nursing prerequisite GPA and over all GPA can/will can be taken into account seperately. A C in a pre nursing science can kill your chances of getting into nursing school. Also, if you do plan to apply to several nursing schools, look into their requirements ahead of time. Not every school is the same. UT Arlington does not require nutrition prior to applying to upper levels but Texas Women’s University does.

I also know, as @AggieDreamin said, that upper level nursing schools don’t want to see that you have taken A&P I & II,Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, etc at a community college. A lot of students at our high schools did this through Dual Credit and it took them 2-3 cycles to be admitted. Only after they had taken 30+ hours at the university were they able to be admitted to upper level.

I know this because I am living it right now with one of my own, who changed majors 3 times since Freshman year and is 2 years behind graduating. If she were on time, she would be graduating in 6-8 weeks. But she isn’t and that is OK. She is where she needs to be. It is not where you start but where you finish.
She has a 3.86 GPA and because upper level nursing has X number of spots, she may not get in this cycle. It IS that competitive. Decisions start being released Friday.

Just wondered - If major is not taken into consideration for initial acceptance into A&M why would it seem that everyone on this forum who still awaits a decision outcome have majors in associated fields eg. BIMS, Public/Allied Health, Biology? Wishing positive thoughts to all still in review!

@Scotsfi The speculation is that they may be pooling and re-evaluating these particular candidates for placement at McAllen but honestly none of us really know. We all have observed this trend although I believe we have seen some Biology come through with PSA but to my knowledge no one from BIMS or Public Health.

Are there any other majors out there waiting for a decision???

Considering that the McAllen center only just opened this past Fall, I am sure that this is the cause for the slight deviation in the admissions process for review admits having BIMS or Public Health as majors this year. I read an article that this year, they only had 198 students enrolled last Fall for their graduate and undergraduate programs - I am sure that they are seeking to increase those numbers.

Challenge is that for many McAllen is not a good option due to location and the lack of traditional ā€œcollege environmentā€ but knowing that maybe they will send out a higher number of offers assuming that not many will accept. Good news is that some may get a ā€œfullā€ offer to attend there. Good luck to everyone! I know we are all anxious to have a final decision and the wait has been excruciating!

@tyra2k8 Did you know your roommates going in or did you roommate match? My D doesn’t have any friends going to A&M so she will have to roommate match. Seems like your experience is wonderful and guessing it was helpful to have roommates that attended A&M.

@stillhopeful581 Just check you can get all the Blinn CC classes you need at the RELLIS campus - you can’t mix/match RELLIS & Bryan. You register with one campus only

@AggieDreamin Yes. Environmental Studies. In review, still have all buttons across the board.

@aggiegirl88 yes I knew my roommates from high school. Roomate matching is great, also another good way is through social media or aggie search is another good way to find roommates. Best of luck to your daughter!!

@treytexag Ok, so one that doesn’t seem related to McAllen. Guess we will see if there are others out there. I haven’t kept track other than the BIMS/Biology kids.

We probably should have started a new thread on 3/1/2019 called ā€œComplete and In Review…stillā€¦ā€

@AggieDreamin @JaceyK Although based on what I read here, we don’t have high hopes. Still keeping the faith though!

@AggieDreamin my son is AgBusiness and still has buttons and is in review

@AggieDreamin @JaceyK @SMcC07 Environmental Studies is in the Agricultural Department. @SMcC07, that’s a good point.

@nervoussenior12356 My son thought of going to U of H and transferring over too but we heard from people it is now harder to transfer over. With PSA, you are GUARANTEED admission as long as you meet the requirements, maintain a 3.25 gpa. My son wants to go to A&M and this is like a one foot in,one foot out offer and we are taking it. Good luck!

@treytexag @SMcC07 Does Ag have a secondary location that they send admits?

OOS family here: been on many times and I am so grateful for all of the help. Daughter admitted (review) in January. Blinn Team Engineering.
I ask that you pray for our family as we make this decision. I’ve shared a lot, but the one thing that I have not shared is that our youngest has a disability (10-Down Syndrome) and our new Aggie in question is the second of four kids. Our family feels very drawn to this school, for many reasons: primarily the patriotic nature and school spirit, the Corps, the school of Engineering and St. Mary’s Catholic center, among other things. We have family in TX, closest in Round Rock… just so worried about cost and logistics, especially when it is not so easy to hop on a plane and get her to all of the summer things… worried about the unknown about sending a kid to college far away (we are in CA). Now that we are getting down to the wire, this mom is getting nervous. I homeschool my sweet daughter with Down Syndrome and it takes a lot from me, and losing my 18 yo daughter will be difficult. But I’ve made peace with that part. She will shine at A&M. I’m just getting nervous.
If any OOS Aggie family can chime in- I’d love that!
