TAMU Class of 2023 - Admission Decisions/Discussion

@ReveilleWannabe Not that we can tell…

…not sure how to work this so the reply goes to you only…@52ag82 university honors. Didnt get BH but was told in the letter to reapply the next semester. Shes not taken a single business course but took many AP so shes not behind. My VIZ hopeful took the business courses and microsoft certs in HS. Go figure. Lol. Thank you for the encouraging words.

@Momw2going2019 so your TAMU twin will be living in UHonors dorm then. Before trying for Business Honors, make sure she asks around-we heard from many that it is too much to do 2 honors programs. Maybe our girls will have a class or two together in Mays!

@52AG82 she really wanted BH but since she can try again later shes not worried about it much. Shes targeting Supply chain, would like to get the masters if theres a 4+1 kind of plan available. International, language and entrepreneurial leanings is her thing. Does anyone know any tips re: NSC for Mays before I go out to schedule one?

@Momw2going2019 - There is a good FB page- Aggie Moms/Dads of Mays Business School Students. You have to ask to join. Hurry and do NSC-when my daughter finally decided on TAMU, last month, there were only 3 Mays NSC dates open (out of 9).

Hello everyone. Current sophomore. I have a few questions. What would be a good test score to aim for if I wind up with a 2q rank? Also, when they assign quartile rank, do they factor in test scores with it too? I got a 29 on the ACT this year and think I could do a lot better. I go to an extremely competitive school where top 25% is 4.86, and I will finish with around a 4.65

@Tunnelbear99 good for you for looking ahead and being proactive. 29 as a sophomore is great. 2nd quarter hurts as we’ve seen this year. Tamu won’t assign a rank unless your school is non ranking. But to answer the question, no, test scores are not considered by tamu when ranking.

There is a rumor that things are changing for Aggie class of 2024 in admissions. They haven’t come out and said what it is, but most likely they are doing away with the academic admit. So only top 10% are automatic. Again, it’s a rumor but my friend in admissions said a huge change is coming and she’s scared how it will impact them. Then someone read about the academic admit thing and it just kinda supports what she said. But until it’s official… it’s specularion.

So… for holistic review you’ll need to beef up everything extracurricular and get that test score as high as possible. Take it as many times as you can. And have a solid backup plan that you’re happy with. There are so many great universities and although it may feel like the end all if you don’t get in… it’ll just be a blip when you’re looking back.

Best of luck, you’re going to do great!!!

Thank you for the super fast reply! I’m hoping to take some prep and want around a 33ish.

@AggieMomhelp I’m just hoping really good test scores outweigh a 2q rank. I’ve been lurking in this sub for quite a while.

@Tunnelbear99 Just as an FYI - we have seen people with high test scores still get PSA. You have the rest of this year and next year to improve your GPA - also factor in possibility of those ahead of you faltering…doesn’t always happen but if you work hard and persevere, you will be surprised!! Another thing - when pursuing extracurriculars, I have read over and over again - only do what you are passionate about because that will 1) shine through and 2) give you something to write about in your essay (if applicable, of course). Good luck and don’t be shy - you will keep learning lots of new stuff on here (also any changes to admissions process will probably be discussed here as well).

Thanks! I just joined NHS and also play football. I feel like NHS will help me beef up my ec’s but still need a little more advice on it.

@Tunnelbear99 you are smart to be looking ahead! Unfortunately so many high schools in Texas are super competitive, so Admissions won’t take that into consideration. You’ll really need to work on gpa/rank, and remember your end of Junior year transcript is what gets sent to colleges.
We have several friends who have greatly inporoved their test scores, simply by using free Khan Academy.
NHS is great-congrats! See if you can get membership into Science, English or foreign language NHS. And definitely volunteer in your community, keeping track of those hours.
Good luck!

@Tunnelbear99 What major are you planning to pursue?

@AggieMomhelp geosciences or bio environmental science

What we saw at my daughter’s HS is that top 20-25% with higher SAT scores (many missing academic admit by 20-40 points) all got PSA. Many were business majors & are pursuing other avenues as PSA really doesn’t seem “business” friendly.

2Q &/or lower scores (upper 1100s to low1200s) were who got Blinn-TEAM offers from her school.

I have the I have the equivalent of a 1360

This year was distinctly different, @Tunnelbear99. Many highly capable students were given PSA, students with scores near SAT equivalent of 1500 and good class ranks. This was a year when “backup” plans became extremely important. Some students that couldn’t get into A&M were able to get into schools like Purdue. Depending upon your intended major, you might be able to get into schools that are ranked even above A&M in that major and/or get excellent financial aid, honors program, open admissions into a university so that you could move around, and so on and on.

If you have an idea of what general area you might like to study, put it out here and let all these experts give you some good ideas about additional schools. It could be very important to apply at least laterally with respect to TAMU, that is, not just having a safety school with relatively undemanding admissions. Consider also applying to schools with equal or higher strength in your area relative to TAMU. You might apply as though TAMU is a backup. This will involve some change in mindset, and so now might be a good time to learn about some other schools to start a possible mindset change. This is not to say that you couldn’t be admitted to TAMU, not saying that AT ALL, but we want to see all of you become more open-minded and using objective critical evaluation skills.
You are getting an excellent education in a school with way more than average number of fine students. That education is the most important thing, not class rank per se. Remember: you do you and take your passions and interests to the next step now if possible.

Howdy, I have chimed in on the ut page because my senior is going there next year, but I have been watching this page as I also have a junior & it’s time to move on to figuring out her plans now. She should be a top ten percent auto admit. What ACT/SAT score do you all feel is needed for an auto admit to feel secure about engineering admittance? Thanks so much!

@Tunnelbear99 I agree with @MomHopesNxtGenAg - Have a solid backup plan that you really like. Not just a safety school that you are okay with. It’s fine to have TAMU as your top choice - but it is not the only place you could be happy, feel at home and get a quality education.

Watching this whole process this year felt very different than last year to me and if the rumors @AggieMomhelp alluded to are happening, next year will be a whole lot different. This year’s PSA felt almost as deep at UTs CAP. My daughter’s friend is in the top quarter with a perfect ACT (36) and she got CAPed at UT. My daughter goes to a “competitive” HS where the school was a buzz about the number of people CAPed.

@txaggiemom I think some of us have been thinking 1360-ish or above, with strong math subscore. I haven’t been tracking math subscores as closely as total SAT score, so maybe 650 math minimum?? I would aim even higher given how dynamic things have been this year. Along with this math subscore, highly recommend her taking AP Calculus BC, Physics C Mechanics and Physics C E&M if possible, AP chemistry, AP computer science. I have to believe that evident math and science preparation figures in there somewhere in admissions. These courses are also directly applicable to first-year engineering courses. If these are not available, consider dual credit math and science or taking highest available level available at her school. Freshman engineering students need to do well because of the entry to a major procedure to get into their desired engineering major. I know this sounds like a lot, but perhaps she could do as much as reasonably possible along these lines.
