Got a nice / touching birthday card from S yesterday. We’ve been playing a good amount of golf as it’s a safe way to stay active during covid and he wrote “all the time shared on and off the course has been a silver lining in the corona virus craziness.”
My kid is sitting in the driveway jamming with two master musicians, working hard to hold his own, and being deftly, melodically, lovingly pulled along. Look at my guy, his confidence building, his skills growing, his mom swooning.
After spending a few years as a SAHM and then going through an overdue divorce I had struggled to get a job and just took what I could get part-time. I finally got a full-time job as a consumer real estate underwriter and just finished my second week. Maybe not where I had hoped to be at this point in life, but it’s a step in the right direction and I can get insurance starting in September, which I haven’t had for about 7 years now.
We’ve put D to work inside and outside our house. We are paying her because it frees us up to bill more engineering hours. Wow, what a hard worker she is! Her future employers will be lucky to get her. ?
The evolution of a CS students bedroom desk in the time of covid:
Our S came home in March with his back pack and his much-loved Razer laptop thinking it would only be for a few weeks. He placed his laptop on his desk in his bedroom and finished his winter quarter.
He needed more assets for spring quarter so he rummaged through my home office that is filled with computers and networking gear I no longer use (retired). He found and resurrected a Lenovo laptop. Loaded Linux on it and placed it on his desk.
As he worked on his senior paper, he needed even more compute resources so he found and resurrected a Dell Xeon workstation. Loaded Linux on it and added it along with a 17” monitor to his desk. He found that the desktop did not have WiFi so he added a WiFi repeater to desk area.
Knowing his remote internship is staring soon we went on Amazon and purchased a green-screen setup – screen, webcam tripod, and lights and configured his desk for video conferencing. Just yesterday he received a Mac from the company he’s interning with over the summer.
So, he went from a desk with a single laptop to a green-screen desk setup with 3 laptops, a desktop work station, and the networking gear to support all his video conferencing needs. I’m glad I procrastinated on clearing out my old office!
The public library here has re-opened! Masks required is social distancing. Certain services not available. But I can go in and browse the shelves again!
I have lost over 5 pounds since February, so am at the weight I prefer. It seems like a good and healthy weight for me! Yay!
I sure look forward to our library re-opening. They’ve re-opened for curbside delivery but I love walking through the library and being able to view books before choosing which to borrow.
We got some good news today. The local scholarship trust group increased younger S’ award by $1000. It is mostly merit based, but they do want FASFA to consider. His FASFA EFC doubled with older S’ graduation, so I was worried his award would be cut. Nope. He has enough scholarship $$$ to cover tuition now. (Big phew and happy dance!)
Our library is opening to accept returned books on 6/30, and we will be able to request books for pick up starting on 7/6. I think I need to spend some time this week with the online catalogue.
One of my kids has something going on and all I can do is pray. Yesterday I went on a walk and prayed - I prayed the rosary, I meditated on the faith my grandparents had in their lives and prayed some more for resolution for my kid. When I got home - there was a text from the kid with news that issue has been resolved.
