Texas A&M Class of 2029 Official Thread

Slightly OT, but does anyone know if A&M has an appeal process for AP equivalences? My student got a 5 on AP precalculus exam, which A&M equates to Math 102 (algebra). My son needs needs math 140 and 142. Is there any way A&M can decide (maybe on a dept. basis) to accept to the precalc AP exam for 140?

He is taking AP Calculus next year and will take the exam for that as well. I would seem crazy to me that A&M could offer him credit for 142 (is he does well on the AP) and not for 140.

Also, if that is what happens, is there any way around math 140, such as a clep test? I know he could take 140 for the easy A, but trying to avoid that.

Thanks in advance.

They will not accept it for 140. I have never heard of them accepting anything other than what they have listed on their AP course sheet equivalent (with score requirement).

@dawn3 assume student is applying for Mays?
I’ve never seen a Mays student get out of taking both 140 and 142; maybe they could get credit for one, but definitely not both.
If they’re strong math students, 140 and 142 shouldn’t be hard, and will be gpa boosters.
Why is student trying to avoid those classes?

no, school of architecture. it’s not that I think it would be hard, but architecture in a 6 year slog and just trying to shave off time (and money) to use for grad school. thank you for your replies.

For architecture, it is more straight forward (and useful) to take AP Calculus BC, if getting 4 or 5, claim both MATH 151 and MATH 152.

If your student wants to remain in AP Calculus AB, take MATH 1324 at community college or DC. There are many available on line.

Keep in mind that GPA early on is SO key to everything. It’s so much easier to maintain a high GPA than play catch up and you can always add hours later as you go. It also can open up honors and scholarship opportunities, your GPA is a part of so many applications while in school. If you are thinking Grad School it also factors into doing a 5 year program for a Masters and getting double credit for Jr/Sr classes. Getting off to a rough start makes so many things harder.

My eldest had no APs but got very creative with CC classes he took online for Non Major related classes. He also wasn’t a strong Math/Science kid and took 140 and 142 straight out of school in the Summer and had to take 2 Semesters of Sciences also in CC. First Semester took 13 hours with an Easy A Elective and crushed it. Then his confidence went up and he took 15, then 17, then 19 plus taking multiple online CC courses simultaneously.

End result is a kid that was a good but not great student in HS who now is on track to graduate in 3 years and has a 4.0.

Younger son is the other end of the spectrum coming in. He’ll have 14 AP’s and 3 DC’s and is a very strong student going into Engineering. So far he has all 4’s and 5’s on his AP Exams. For him it will be about making sure to be strategic about what credits to accept and which ones not to to also protect his GPA for ETAM and everything else. It’s tempting as he is definitely going to Grad School and maybe Med School so speeding it up would be great. Not going to risk going too fast though, as I said GPA sets up everything.

Strategy in what classes you take when and with which profs is just as important as how hard you study and the strategy is different for everyone. Just remember you can always go and take more classes later and while an extra Semester is a bummer it’s nothing compared to the anxiety of being over your head with classes you aren’t ready for or having fewer options because you struggled your first year. Unfortunately I learned most of those lessons the hard way myself but I have always been determined to make sure my kids can benefit from my mistakes.

Would one of the seasoned posters list steps for application process.

For example and discussion purposes only…this is what I need help with:

Register for Common App
Complete Common App
Complete 1 Essay Question, 2 Short Answers
Get copy of official transcript
Complete SARS
Get Aggie UID
Link SARS to UID?
ETC…I know this is not the proper order.

Did it 2 years ago for my oldest son but slept since then. Current applicant, Top 10% at 5A Texas School, Mays Business School, will apply Aug. 1. No scholarship info needed.

Many Thanks!

@Aggie19958 SRAR can be started now. Make sure your student has a copy of their transcript to work from.

You have it all down that I can see. As @Eggscapgoats said, do SRARs now and work on Essay prompts. Even thought they are auto admit, essays may play a part in essays, so while it’s not a game changer, it should be a good attempt and well written.

If our student is sending test scores (ACT/SAT) can they send them now ahead of time or do they need to wait until they submit their application?

We sent ours ahead of time.

You don’t need to wait.

Hi, Does anyone know where or how to enter college credits earned by any university on common app? Credits earned through community college are showing in my daughters school transcript but credits earned by another university aren’t in high school transcript. So she really can’t add them on “Courses and Grades” section as they HAVE TO enter what they see on their high school transcript.

Looks like “Courses and Grades” section only take courses from high school/s. She sent an email asking her counselor to see if they can add her University credit on high school transcript(like a dual enrollment since she has the transcript for it) and waiting for his reply. In the mean time I was just wondering if there is any other section she can add these on common app, thanks!

Report via SRAR, not common app.

There is no need to add college credit on high school transcript, just send the college transcript electronically to TAMU.

If they were taken to meet a high school requirement too then your child should send the transcript to the high school and they will issue credit and put on transcript. My daughter did this for several classes. Otherwise it doesn’t matter and doesn’t need to be on the high school transcript.

Maybe a silly question, but there are a couple places where they say that the application essay is the only essay they will read (e.g., in the admissions presentation during the campus tour, or on the website which reads “No additional essays will be reviewed.”) If that is really true, what is the purpose (and value) of the extra questions?

FWIW, my son is in the top 10% and is applying to get into the College of Engineering. We understand that the engineering essay is required and different and he is writing the others. It just seems odd that they go to the trouble of pointing out that they will only read the one essay.

Makes sense, thank you @FriscoDad

Really confused. I asked an admissions rep whether I could send a transcript now to prove his top 10% ranking, before the rank changes to include summer classes. He said no because your end of junior year rank is not sufficient. That seems to go against everything I’ve read elsewhere. I thought rank at time of application was what mattered?

You could potentially miss opportunities if you do wait to send scores and recommendations. (Know this from experience.). Send early, send often!

I think they mean that if you submit additional essays beyond the ones that they are asking for.
